Note: This may belong in the import section, but I think it will be of interest to a lot of classic gamers here.

10-Yard Fight is a much-detested NES game (even though I always thought it was pretty fun and easy to play. I'm also not a sports fan, so what do I know?)

But for shits and giggles and loaded the Japanese rom onto my cell phone for emulation fun when I'm sitting around at work. Lo and behold, the Japanese version is quite different from the U.S. incarnation!

Basically, the mechanics of the game are changed such that it's more of an action-based arcade experience than a sports simulation. There is a score bar for one thing, and you are awarded point values for 1st downs, touchdowns, etc.

Also, you never play defense (although I haven't tried the 2 player mode.) The way the game works is you get an extra 10 seconds on the clock for each 1st down. If the clock runs out, it's game over.

The game still has the "High School", "College", "Pro", and "Super" modes but you can't select them from the beginning. With each level you start at the "first half". When you get a touchdown, it progresses to the "second half". Get a touchdown in the second half and you move on to the next level.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty interesting that each region got significantly different versions of this much-ignored game. I've played a few Famicom Disk System versions of a few of the early NES sports games (Pro Wrestling, Ice Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball), and most of them are either identical to the US versions or inferior to their U.S. counterparts. It was neat to find one that's so different. Not necessarily better, but diffeent.

Ever played Vs. Excitebike for FDS? It's eons better than the original, along with Green Beret, Metroid (the music is better with the rudimentary FM), and Ice Climber (map selection's a good thing.)

I have Vs. Excitebike and Metroid. I've been looking hard on Ebay for Vs. Ice Climber, but it never shows up. I've been debating getting Green Beret, but now that I know it's markedly better, I'll probably pick it up soon. Kid Icarus and the first Legend of Zelda are markedly better on the FDS as well. However, I've found that we got a better deal in the U.S. with Zanac, Castlevania II, Zelda II, and Doki Doki Panic (though this is debatable). I was told that Salamander on the Famicom was much better than the NES version (Life Force) but so far I haven't noticed much of a difference at all except for a different power-up bar at the bottom of the screen.

If there's one game that has a better Famicom version, it's Contra/ Gryzor. The Famicom version has a cutscene with a more sensible plot, screens showing how far you are in game, a cool animated fire on the title screen, and (from what I've heard) slightly enhanced music. And the Konami Code works in it as well. :)

Also, I wish there was a patch for TLoZ FDS that translates it, since it has better music due to the FM sound.

The JP version of Salamander also has three options instead of two and multiple endings (which the NES version lacks). I'm not sure why this makes it "much" better rather than slightly better, though. I'm on the fence for getting it, though the transparent cart looks awesome.

The transparent cart is awesome. God bless Konami's proprietary Famicom cartridges.

Too bad they stuck with black for most of their other carts. Also, for some strange reason, some of Konami's carts like Rampart, Bucky O'Hare, and Yume Penguin Monogatari used the Nintendo design.
