View Full Version : Is there any way to get a PAL PS1 to display properly on an NTSC TV?

A while ago I shipped a modded PAL PS1 system to Canada (where I am currently), but it seems that no matter what kind of connection we try, the TV seems to break the picture into about 8 vertical strands, all with different colour palettes, regardless of the game or region of the game. I know that if you wanted to play NTSC games on an old PAL TV you would use a SCART cable, but most North American TVs don't have SCART sockets. Newer TVs sold in Europe support NTSC, but North American TVs (old or new) don't seem to support PAL signals at all.

Does anyone know a way to get this PAL system to display correctly on an NTSC TV? Be it a certain type of cable we have to use (a something to VGA adapter maybe), or a simple system mod to change the video display?

It's no big deal if this isn't possible, but I'm curious since I can't find any info about doing things this way round online.

Do modern LCD TVs support both PAL and NTSC? I bought a PAL Playstation early in the year but haven't tried it out yet, since I don't have a TV that can handle the PAL signal. I was wondering if a modern HDTV could deal with it.

And since we're on the subject, what are you doing as far as power conversion goes for that Playstation? I know that UK electronics use 220 and US ones use 110, and I don't have a step-down converter. Can the Playstation's internal power supply cope with it if I just used a North American power cable plugged into it?

If you have a World wide LCD, then yes it would support pal and NTSC. an example of one is the Samsung 940MW. This LCD accepts SCART and Japanese RGB also.

For the power I'm actually just using a US (or to be more specific, Canadian) PS2 power supply. A US PS1 power supply would work too. It looks like these "world wide" LCD TVs are commonly known as "multi system". I think we're out of luck unless we use one of those - it's probably best to just get a modded US PS1, or a debugging station, whichever you can find most easily.

I have an old C64 monitor that has a vertical hold knob that I use for my PAL imports that won't display properly. When my current HDTV dies I'll be sure to replace it with one of those nifty world wide compatible TVs.

I tried burning an image of a disc called "Import Player" which allows you to change the video output of the system. I selected "NTSC" and loaded an American game but the colours were still wrong, so I tried again selecting "PAL" and the game ran with the correct colours, but with borders. But, this disc solved the issue for me. You just need to make sure the system is modded, or you'll have to use disc-swapping or some other method of playing backups every time you want to use the system.
