Should I get the SNES or genesis version of NHL '94?

Sega CD version. If you don't have the Sega CD, then get the Genesis version. Same game, but why not get the one with better sound and music. And not only that but you get awesome Sega CD FMV! :)

Sega CD version is the best one.

I prefer the Genesis version. You can still play it online with others in a league format. There are a few games on Youtube that I've seen.

Neither, NHLPA '93.

NHL '94 on Sega CD (there, I said it), is the best hockey game ever made.

Do what you need to do.

Sega CD, no doubt, but to answer your actual question, I've always insisted that the EA Sports games were more fluid and controlled better on the SNES when compared to the Genny.

SNES.

Better sound, gfx and control.

Obviously, if you have nostalgic memories tied to the Genesis version then these things do not matter much.

I was raised on the SNES version, and played the heck out of it. Having said that, after finally playing the Genesis version years later I had to admit it was smoother and faster. As others have said, the Sega CD version takes all the good stuff from the Genesis version and adds some cool crowd ambience and FMV intros. Also loading times...

SNES all they way. Although I am just saying this because I have a copy I can't sell.

How do the controls compare?

I'm sorry, the answer is NHL 95. Better luck next time!

As for 94, Genesis (unless you have the means to use a Sega-CD).

How do the controls compare?
I have played both Genesis and SNES versions extensively and I could never understand how the SNES game can be interpreted as being faster. Genesis runs far smoother and at a better pace than the SNES version ever does. The controls as a result feel far more accurate. I cannot speak to the graphical or audio comparison that well as I don't have both games on hand any longer but I'm certain Genesis had better (more full) audio.

If it's not either/or, then I'd go with NHL 98 for the Genesis. THAT, imo, is the peak of the franchise. Although I have not played 94 for the Sega CD.

IF I remember correctly the SNES version does not have a battery back-up but the Genesis one does. You could not play a full season in the SNES, only the playoffs and you had to enter a password. This was a big deal to me back in the day, I got stuck with the SNES one.

That's your problem. (j/k) I'm a bit biased myself.

NHL 94 will probably be one of my favorite hockey games. Mutant League Hockey is another one. The concept is great, but the execution isn't nearly as good.
