Hi,

Does anyone know what Styx songs would fit in perfectly into the Road Rash soundtrack? But I won't include their #1 hit single, "Babe," or its intended follow-up single, "First Time," for it nearly broke up the band (Dennis DeYoung was temporarily fired from the group).

My hot sheet:
Light Up (from Equinox)
Lorelei (from Equinox)
Mother Dear (from Equinox)
Midnight Ride (from Equinox)
Prelude 12/Suite Madame Blue (from Equinox)

Land Ho (non-LP single)
School (from Crime of the Century)
Bloody Well Right (from Crime of the Century)
Hide in Your Shell (from Crime of the Century)
Dreamer (from Crime of the Century)

Ain't Nobody But Me (from Crisis? What Crisis?)
Another Man's Woman (from Crisis? What Crisis?)
Lady (from Crisis? What Crisis?)
You Started Laughing (When I Held You in My Arms) (non-LP B-side single)
Poor Boy (from Crisis? What Crisis?)
Give a Little Bit (from Even in the Quietest Moments)
Gone Hollywood (from Breakfast in America)
The Logical Song (from Breakfast in America)
Goodbye Stranger (from Breakfast in America)
Just Another Nervous Wreck (from Breakfast in America)
Child of Vision (from Breakfast in America)
Crazy (from ...Famous Last Words...)
Put on Your Old Brown Shoes (from ...Famous Last Words...)
It's Raining Again (from ...Famous Last Words...)
My Kind of Lady (from ...Famous Last Words...)
Don't Leave Me Now (from ...Famous Last Words...)

I prefer the years with Roger Hodgson in the band (1969-83).

You don't really want to hear vocoders and pseudo-Japanese? Or is it because of the fact that the song and most of its parent LP are based around the story of a world forbidden from rock'n'roll music over some backmasked Satanic messages in the 1981 song "Snowblind"?

Mostly because I don't think Styx fits in with the tone or the style of the game.

If I were to take a guess as to music that was more fitting for the game, I'd pick AC/DC.

Most Styx songs wouldn't really fit while playing Road Rash. I just can't see myself in an intense race with Come Sail Away playing.

Personally, I'd go with hard rock and metal for a racing soundtrack. Deep Purple, Manilla Road, Ozzy Osbourne, that sort of thing.

None of them.

As much as I love Styx, I have to agree with these guys - they just don't have the "edge" required for a racing game. Though of all the Styx catalog, I'd say that "Renegade" would do well, even in Road Rash.

The same goes for Supertramp. Fantastic group, but they're really more soft rock. And to answer your question... no, you can't have kippers for breakfast.

Ben, aside from Road Rash or other racing games... what would this music be better suited to? I could honestly see some Styx songs being all right for an RPG.

And Mr. Roboto for Virtual On. ;)

Styx is hard-rockin' if you listen to the rip-roaring vocals and guitars of lone remaining founding member, James "J.Y." Young.

The mini-synth solos are definitely video game sounding. This isn't bad, certainly one of Styx's harder songs, and it would work well. At 3:00, the song REALLY starts to slow down, almost to a ballad. You want to hit a guy with a chain to that?

And... Lorelei? Fooling Yourself? Madame Blue? Great songs.... but, you gotta be realistic. Not really tough-sounding music.

Here's where some of these songs may work:

"Busted" scene:
Styx - "Renegade" ("The jig is up, the news is out/They finally found me/The renegade who had it made/Retrieved for a bounty/Never more to go astray/This'll be the end today for the wanted man")

"Wrecked" scene:
Supertramp - "Just Another Nervous Wreck" ("Don't... give a d***/Fight while you can/Kill, shoot 'em up/They'll run amuck//Shout, Judas/Loud, they'll hear us/Soldier, sailor/Who's your tailor?//They'll run for cover/When they discover/Everyone's a nervous wreck now")

"Loser" scene:
Styx - "Fooling Yourself" ("Get up, get back on your feet/You're the one they can't beat and you know it/Come on, let's see what you've got/Just take your best shot and don't blow it")
Supertramp - "Goodbye Stranger" ("Goodbye stranger, it's been nice/Hope you find your paradise//Tried to see your point of view/Hope your dreams will all come true")

"Winner" scene:
Supertramp - "Rudy" ("Now he's just come out of the movies/Numb of all the pain/Sad, but in a while/He'll soon be/Back on his train")

An edited version of PMO could work... just take out the ballad part that lasts from 3:11 to 4:14, and it'll be fine.

This thread is weird, man.

I want to start a thread about what Led Zeppelin songs would improve the soundtrack to Kirby's Adventure.

I think of Road Rash as being more of a Motorhead game than Styx.

If you could choose about five songs by Styx and about three more by Supertramp for a customized Road Rash soundtrack, what would they be?

My picks (Styx)

2. Put Me On
3. Shooz
4. Renegade
5. Heavy Metal Poisoning

My picks (Supertramp)
1. Lady
2. The Logical Song
3. Goodbye Stranger

Let me get some more A&M Records artists out of the bag for you:

The Police:
1. Roxanne
2. Can't Stand Losing You
3. So Lonely
4. Peanuts
5. Message in a Bottle
6. Don't Stand So Close to Me
7. De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
8. Canary in a Coal Mine
9. Driven to Tears
10. Demolition Man
11. Spirits in the Material World
12. Synchronicity
13. Synchronicity II

.38 Special
1. Hold on Loosely
2. Caught Up in You
3. Back Where You Belong

The original soundtrack as we know had it 14 songs (Soundgarden having the most here, with four songs).

Sorry ColecoFan, but there is NO WAY that this guy is listening to Styx or Supertramp (or the Police, .38 Special, Dexie's Midnight Runners, etc).

ColecoFan, are you just an A&M Records guy?

Judging from these picks, we may as well throw in Chicago because of 25 or 6 to 4.

Well, yeah ... because the first Road Rash soundtrack (from 1994) to contain licensed songs were those performed by artists who were all signed to A&M at the time.

The next one (from 1998) contained songs by bands all signed to Atlantic/WEA (like "Mean Machine" by Sugar Ray, and "Living Life" by CIV).

But if I had to take artists from other labels such as Columbia/CBS/Sony (Columbia, Epic, etc.) or WEA/WMG (Warner Bros., Elektra, Atlantic, etc.), here is a random set:
1. "More Than a Feeling" - Boston (Epic/CBS, 1976)
2. "Rock 'n' Roll All Nite" - Kiss (Casablanca/Mercury/PolyGram, 1975)
3. "Abacab" - Genesis (Atlantic/WEA, 1981)
4. "Aces High" - Iron Maiden (EMI, 1982)
5. "Carry On Wayward Son" - Kansas (Kirshner/CBS, 1976)
6. "Beat It" - Michael Jackson (Epic/CBS, 1982)
7. "Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey (Columbia/CBS, 1981)
8. "Round and Round" - Ratt (Atlantic/WEA, 1984)
9. "Pour Some Sugar on Me" - Def Leppard (Mercury/PolyGram, 1987)
10. "Livin' on a Prayer" - Bon Jovi (Mercury/PolyGram, 1986)

Yep, I knew you were doing the A&M stuff. I have to say I'm really tickled to see such a Styx fan that knows his stuff; I haven't seen a fan that hardcore since my friend Lance (who died back in 1993). He was a huge JY fan too, and he would have been thrilled to see JY take over the lead vocals on "Lorelei" on their 1999 tour. I'm getting a little nostalgic now, especially for late 1990-early 1991 when we would listen to the hell out of all those albums on road trips. I'm particularly fond of Styx II, The Serpent is Rising, and Equinox.

Bonus points for mentioning Unfinished Song. Took me forever to track down the vinyl rerelease of Man of Miracles (retitled just "Miracles") with the art deco cover just to find that song (until they released the Wooden Nickel Recordings on CD).

I'm going to answer Babe and its intended follow-up First Time, because I think a song that was dangerous enough to nearly break up the band evokes the kind of recklessness that Road Rash needs.

Yes, that is a fact because the man Tommy Shaw had replaced was John "J.C." Curulewski (1950-88). J.C. played guitar and keyboards on all four of Styx's Wooden Nickel albums and their first A&M release, Equinox. J.C. quit shortly after the release of Equinox, before the band was to tour in support of it. That was when Tommy joined.
