PC shovelware is not suitable for anybody.
If you only play Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, then I suggest that you play some of these as well. That's pretty shallow, as far as games go, so it would only be helpful to expand your horizions.
Retro
Kirby's Adventure (NES)
Mega Man 1-6 (NES)
Super Mario 64 (N64, DS)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES, GBA)
Chrono Trigger (SNES, DS)
Street Fighter II (Various)
Sonic Adventure (DC)
Crazy Taxi (DC)
Super Metroid (SNES)
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64, soon 3DS)
Goldeneye 007 (N64)
Chex Quest (PC)
Modern
ICO (PS2) - Highly recommended, if you can get kids to stick with it
Katamari Damacy (PS2)
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii, GCN)
Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii)
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (PSN, XBLA)
A Boy and His Blob (Wii)
Portal (PC)
Tekken 5 (PS2)
Warsow (PC) - I haven't played this one, but it's a rather clean FPS
This is, off the top of my head, a list of what I would consider to be both high-quality and generally age-appropriate. For instance, if kids are taking karate after school, I see nothing wrong with Tekken. If your ten-year-old is mature enough for shooting blocky polygonal humans, Goldeneye is absolutely awesome. If blood is fine as long as it's green and coming out of alien critters, Metroid Prime is good, and even easier to get into with the Wii controls.
I understand that most kids won't be too keen on the retro side of things, but I think the titles I've listed have held up well enough that modern kids will still enjoy them. What is being pushed at this age group today is generally low quality. Movie games and the like are often excuses for games, and not really anything remarkable in terms of gameplay. I've tried to list games that would be considered "heavier," and more substantial than the throwaway experiences offered by shovelware.

One thing I do know, don't get that V-Tech or Leapfrog stuff for them, other kids will laugh, and edutainment is a bad form of gaming. Mario's Missing, Mario's Time Machine, Donkey Kong Jr. Math... I feel that platformers are the best choice for children, most aren't overly challenging for them, and most are rated E for everyone.
