Bangai-O!
No way in hell you can make a list of the best Dreamcast games and forget Bangai-O!. Blowing stuff up...this is the genius of Treasure.

Mr. Driller out, huh? Hmm. A lot of people picked that one. I'm kinda surprised you didn't like it, it's got that old-school feel to it.

Bangai-O must be on this list. I know that Mars Matrix is liked by many, but I don't think it quite deserves a spot here It's got a nice power-up system and options mode, but the graphics are drab and the level design is just uncreative, doing little aside from tossing wave upon wave of projectiles at the player with an almost tedious excess.
On the other hand, Bangai-O has simple-but-satisfying gameplay and dozens of cleverly built stages to explore and master. It's also got a nice old-school aesthetic that inspires you to higher and higher scores, something that today's games rarely manage, or even attempt. And it's damn funny, with more hilarious and nonsensical conversations than a Dadaist play.
I'd also suggest Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves in place of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but that's just my biased opinion.

Street Fighter 3 Third Strike should be on that list. Best 2D fighter on the system.

I always hated the name change from Jet Set to Jet Grind. Blah. Give me the import anyday ;)
I think Street Fighter Alpha 3 should be in there ;)

I love Bangai-O, but it hurts to play....it's painfully obvious that it was designed for the N64 and ported not too well to the (in my opinion) inferior dreamcast controller design.
In other news....
I liked Crazy Taxi 1 better than 2.
I liked Power Stone 1 better than 2.
I haven't played Sonic Adventure 2, so I can't comment on that one. :D

The closest games to Mech Assault are Virtual On and Tech Romancer. They're both excellent games, both concentrate heavily on mech battles (not missions).

I'd like to... but being Canadian... it's hard to win anything without paying ungodly amounts
However I just recently checked out EB Games and they have some sweet prices on DC games... 4.99-12.99.... even after the converion that's sweet
I bought my DC and games when Wal-Mart was clearing out the DC inventory to make room for other stuff since the DC was abandoned
I got the system, controller, VMU, sonic 1, sonic shuffle, and web browser for 90 bucks
and VF 3tb, Dynamite Cop, Centipede, Power Stone, MK Gold, Blue Stinger for 10 bucks each

No, no, no, no, no. I disagree with your list almost completely! The Dreamcast was best at arcade ports and driving games. I'll give you Soul Calibur, Tennis 2K2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and House 2, but you've left off
Virtual On Oratorio Tangram
Virtua Fighter 3tb
Space Channel 5
Space Channel 5 part 2
Metropolitan Street Racer
Tokyo Extreme Racer
Daytona USA
Ferrari F355

Power Smash
Crazy Taxi (the original is better than the sequel)

It doesn't try to push the hardware too hard, but finds a perfect spot for displaying the graphics -- and it looks great, even after 4 years.
That's the mark of a great game!

I liked Power Stone 1 better than 2.
I haven't played Sonic Adventure 2, so I can't comment on that one. :D
Am I the only person thinking Crazy Taxi doesn't have and needs a real sequal? CT2 and CT3 simply can't compare with the first Crazy Taxi, the first game has the best scenery and coolest cab drivers compare to driving in the desert and concrete jungle (that's all I call NY) with old grandma as a cabbie, yuk!
I really would like to see Crazy Taxi with San Francisco expanded (or simply combined the 2 modes into a large area), put more features in the cabs, and retain the same drivers.

Street Fighter 3 third strike

I definitely agree with your ins, but not your outs! How could you place CvS over MvC2. MvC2 is easily one of the top 3 games for the DC. There is endless replay value. Finding all of the infinites, all glitches, and getting 300+ plus points. How could you place that over CvS?
Also i recommend putting in SFA3

I have to say, IMO, DC was the 2D fighter fans' dream system. So Capcom vs. SNK (greatest fighter ever, IMO), SFIII - Third Strike, and SFA3 all need to be on the list, along with Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Want me to come out of left field? OK, I will.
Swirl. In.
Chu Chu Rocket. Out.
Replace the Tennis 2K2 with just Tennis.
Swirl? I know, I know. But it's a guilty pleasure. Ever play Swirl 4 player? Silly, silly fun. Loved it. And... Price was right - free. Came with every demo disk, every web browser disc.
If you count the browser discs "as a whole", think about how unique they were. No other manufacturer has included a web browser with their system, and since they're still functional (people still browse to Fatman Games with the Dreamcast! 142 hits this month, on a game system!).... It deserves at least a mention. Sega was always pushing the edge like that (including with the Saturn). Granted, not the first system on-line, but the first workable, solid approach.
And to heck with graphics, Swirl was fun!

What no Bangai-O yet? Methinks the list need be expanded. It is hard for me to think of personal top 20 but top 30 maybe. At any rate Bangai-O in Crazy Taxi out. The comment about the controller awkwardness is well taken, but a few judicious switches make it much smoother. Ok I've never liked Crazy Taxi, but to exclude Bangai-O and Samba Di Amigo is pushing it. Anything with a specialized controller has to make a best of list on principal alone. Ok anybody for a top 21 list?

Bangai-O is great, and Crazy Taxi is fun, but gets old quick. But keep Chu Chu Rocket, easily one of the best party games on the system. I would go for a top 25 list.

I would go for a top 25 list.
But we're doing a Top 20 list. :) The thing about the DC is that pretty much all the games are excellent, so if we stretched it out to 25, someone would want it to go to 30, then 35, etc. So we're sticking with 20. Tough competition, but it makes for more interesting discussions. :)
I have to make a solitary vote for Seaman.

I wouldn't mind seeing Samba on the Top 20 list either, but what to drop? I'd vote for Unreal, but I doubt I'd win that battle.
Seaman just didn't win over the gamers in us. Nobody will likely try it again because it's oft regarded as one of the clunkers. ;) It definitely gets points for "trying something different" but Top 20? No way.
And suggesting that HOTD2 get dropped? Blasphemy!

I was watching Filter on G4 last night and they did their top ten of Dreamcast games. I thought I'd list them for a comparison...I note that they list the first games of each series (with one exception) rather than the sequels. It's also quite obvious you aren't going to get every genrer covered in a mere top ten. Their list...
1. Soul Calibur
2. Sonic Adventure
3. Shenmue
4. Crazy Taxi
5. Phantasy Star Online
6. Jet Grind Radio
7. Skies of Arcadia
8. Power Stone
9. House of the Dead 2
10. Virtua Tennis
Notably absent are any traditional racing games and any team sports...I thought one of the NFL 2K games would've been listed. I think someone at the site decides on the games available for each top ten and you just get to vote for each game on a 1-10 scale so you probably couldn't vote for every single game you wanted. There's plenty of games I would've liked to have seen on this list and at least one I personally don't think was good enough to be in the top ten...but that's just me.

Speed Devils
Probably not worthy of a top 20 nod by all but in my books its a top 20 DC game all the way. This game got horrible reviews when it came out but I had more fun with it and still do than most of my DC games. I get lost in most car games where you buy parts for the cars and stuff like that. I love the arcade controlls and earning money in a varity of ways. This game was probably too easy for most racing fans because it was one I could actually play.

Such an old topic, but I must weigh in as the Dreamcast is "my" system of choice.
Favs
Crazy Taxi,
Grandia II,
Mr Driller,
Ooga Booga,
Power Stone 2,
Project Justice,
Record of Lodoss War,
San Francisco Rush 2049,
Skies of Arcadia,
Soul Calibur,
Wetrix+,
Worms World Party
I'm not saying these are all top 20 worthy, but these got the most play time in my system.

Thought this would be an appropriate time to give this old thread a bump.
My vote for best fighter on the system would be Capcom VS SNK with SFIII: Double Impact coming in a close second. I really dig the turbo option in Double Impact... that's why it wins over Third Strike. Project Justice would be another fighter worthy of this list.
Favorite racing title would be Test Drive V-Rally. I just liked this one better than Sega Rally 2.
Favorite RPG: Grandia II.
Honorable mentions (Games I just really like that I don't feel like categorizing): ChuChu Rocket!, Sega Swirl, Typing of the Dead, Space Channel 5, and Dynamite Cop.
