Thanks to an unrelated thread on my board, I think I've finally uncovered the inspiration for the (frankly disappointing) U.S. The Guardian Legend boxart. Here, you be the judge:

I never really got into this game, I like Dragon Spirit better. I do agree that the North American box art is terrible for this game.

The Guardian Legend / Guardic Gaiden box art fails all across the board. I mean, you have a game with a hot chick in a space bikini who turns into a fighter ship. That is the potential for really awesome cover art, and they throw the whole concept away for a boring pair of eyes.

I dunno, that seems more like a blatant homage or a reference than a rip off. I mean the two titles are even homophones.

Yeah but... Homophones? And it's not like Dragonslayer's box art was a complete knockoff from the movie poster. It's really just the title and font.
Oh and Alien = Metroid.

On the cover of Contra, the artist directly lifted Schwarzenegger's body from Predator's poster and placed Bill's head on it. Not sure about Metal Gear but I think the same thing happened. With TGL here it looks more like a different image rather than a direct lift, but still close enough that it might as well be.
