well, I recently picked up a gamecube with Ikaruga and Chaos Field, so i'm on a shmup binge.
I've played quite a few shmups over the years, so i'm really only looking for more recent games, IE ps2/xbox/GC, and only US releases.
some of my favorites are zero gunner 2, twinkle star sprites, and gate of thunder.

anyone got a few suggestions?

Ps2 Gradius V

If you have a modded Ps2, there are a ton of greats. Not much on Xbox even if you get imports.

If you're only looking for those 3 systems domestically, your best bet is PS2. About all that's on Xbox is Xyanide and what's on the arcade collections, and you have pretty much the Gamecube's domestic shmup collection.

PS2 you can get Gradius V, which is amazing, Castle Shikigami II, which is hilariously translated, R-Type Final, Raiden III, and the Gradius III & IV pack. There's also the PS1 library - don't miss R-Type Delta, Thunderforce V, or G-Darius.

If you're looking at the newest gen, there's a few quality domestic releases on 360, like Raiden Fighters Aces, Deathsmiles, and the stuff on Xbox Live Arcade.

well that's a shame about the GC, i really liked chaos field...
anyway, i took a look around locally, and I found raiden 3, mobile light force 2(which i heard is actually just a messed up localization of a shmup), and silpheed.
I know i'll like raiden, but how are the other 2?

There are 2 great shmups on Xbox Indie Games I rant about whenever the opportunity arises: both are A DOLLAR.

The first is a pretty interesting bullet hell offering called Vampire Rage. It uses the sword mechanic from Radiant Silvergun. The other is Shoot 1UP, and instead of getting an extra life for every 1 up you get, you get another ship on the screen to manipulate.

For two bucks, you can't go wrong.

2 great imports if you like Cave smups are mushihimesama futari 1.5 and espgaluda II on xbox 360. you don't need to mod your 360 at all to play them as they are region free

Silpheed is pretty fun. Nothing special, but fun. MLF is pretty much the butchered port of the first Shikigami game, and it's alright. if you like how it plays you may as well give 2 a shot, but personally I love the engrish story of the 2nd game.

ah yes… shooters are my favorite games for playing!

I'll post some suggestion for modern console… Ubersaurus covered the PS2 well…
if you enjoyed Chaos Field, then there is Ultimate Shooting Collection available on the Nintendo Wii, the collection features all of Milestone's games (except Illvelo) - Chaos Field, Radirgy, and Karous. also on the Wii are:

Castle of Shikigami III
Monkey King

Now to get the best of modern shooting games, a Japanese Xbox 360 is a MUST!!!
here are some of the many shooters available today:
Shikigami no Shiro III
Raiden Fighters Aces (all three Raiden Fighters games)
Raiden IV
Otomedius (Graduis style game)
Shooting Love 200X (featuring Trizeal, Exzeal, and shooting skills test)
Mamorukun

and them there is the Cave games…

Also, if you don't have a modded/imported 360, there's always the US release of Deathsmiles (which is unbelievably cool, complete with multiple modes specifically for the US release). Even comes with a DS faceplate and soundtrack if you can find the limited long-box edition.

The music kicks ass, BTW. :D

I second the Soldner X games.

They're both good, but the second is a drastic improvement over the original. It has a better "flow" to it.

Not only can he play Deathsmiles(and several dozen other fun shooters on XBLA) but he'll also be able to play Radiant Silvergun when it comes out on XBLA next year. Of course he'll need a 360 for all that gaming goodness and I'm not sure if he has one since he mentioned gaming on the PS2/Xbox/GC. But cheap 360's can be picked up on craigs list(among other places) if he really wants to add more shooters to his collection.

Excellent recommendations. Gradius 5 is top stuff as far as North American PS2 shooters are concerned. I would add Taito Legends 2 PS2 instead of PS1 G.Darius; PS1 is quite slow and gives a false impression of the pace and skill required. Not only but TL2 has RayStorm, Darius Gaiden, and Metal Black on top of a great Taito back-catalogue. It's cheap too.

Xyanide was also released on PS2 in Japan and on PSP in Japan/Europe.
Additionally, there is Raiden 4 on 360 which is quite good and Raiden 3 on PS2/PC not to mention the classic The Raiden Project on PS1.

There's R-Types and In The Hunt (both PS1) if you seek an IREM fix and both are well converted.

I love Raiden Fighters Aces for the 360. It's a good solid shooter (three games actually) with great graphics and sound, but what I love the most is the wide selection of ships. So many different ratios of speed, power and weapon styles there's bound to be something that's just right for you.

So many other modern shmups (current gen) make me say "meh" and I don't play them very much, but RFA keeps me coming back for more.

Or this:

I would wait for a price drop, as I got mine awhile back for 9.99 from here

I am now super dissappointed in Soldner X 2 as I am not seeing a pc release
