I think I beat the first level once...
when I was 8. Then my older cousin played through the whole game as I sat there in amazement (and envy/rage/disgust).

Stage 4, IIRC. It's been a while since I sat down and seriously tried to play it.

I never played the game much, but I never got off the first level ever.

I don't think I ever got past stage 3. I did get almost to the end of Super Ghouls N' Ghosts though....took like a month...

I have the game for Virtual Console. I can make it to the second level. I am mad at myself because I reset the game by accident instead of selecting continue. Now I have to start over! I don't recall if I ever played the game when I was younger. Given my propensity for renting some of the worst or hardest games possible, I probably did...

I've never beaten the game on console, but I've gotten close. With limited use of save states I beat it last year, but I can't remember if I went through it the second time to completely seal the deal. The ending text after the first run is fairly awesome - I did indeed feel strongth welling in my body at that point.

Beat both quests of the game (2 full runs, the second being more difficult) last year:

The Engrish is fantastic, clearly the editors didn't think anyone would actually get far enough to see the ending. Still one of my favorite games of all time, great game!

I can get to the second part of the third level, those red guys are a little too much for me. This is one of the first NES games I ever rented, by the way, I'd only really played Mario before so I was unprepared for the frustration of a house full of really mean trolls throwing spiky turds at me.

This is by far the hardest game I've ever played. I'm unable to get past the second level.

I think I've only ever gotten to like the third or fourth level. I'm just gonna blame my lack of skill on Micronics.

I haven't played more than a few seconds of Ghosts N' Goblins for NES, but I have beaten Ghouls N' Ghosts on Genesis twice fully. One on regular difficulty, and one on Professional.
Just to get the same cliffhanger ending...

I remember I beat Super Ghouls and Ghosts. Somehow. On a weekend rental, even. But I sure as hell wasn't going to play the second quest, though.
The problem with Ghosts 'N Goblins isn't just that it's hard. It's that the controls are absolute crap. I'm sorry to say this, but it's kind of a poorly made game.

Thank you all for letting me feel a little better...lol
I realy, realy ,realy hate to shelve a game because its to hard but it mite just happen.
It stinks too because i have very found memories of this game as a kid in the arcade. Not to say i faired any better then.
Hey mrmark0673 be honest how long were you at it before you pulled that off? You are a freekin cyborg man!!! Ohh and nice avatar!!! Id be wearing it like a badge of honor. LOL
Drixxel how far did you get on the console?
Dose any one know if the sega one is just as hard? Looks like im gonna have to skip over to super ghouls and ghost.

Ghost'n Goblins is a really great game and one of my top 5 NES games. I've gotten to the end of the NES one, but I see no point in plaything thru the whole game twice just to get the silly ending so I've never actually "beatin the game". Really hard game but at least you have unlimited continues making it a lot better and keeps it from being completely impossible.
I don't really understand why, but I never saw the game as "OMG SO HARD" hard. (I got to the end with about 3 days of practice) I'm not trying to flaunt my video game skills here because I'm not really that great at most games (I can't even beat the new kingdom hearts on it's hardest mode and as far as fighting games go I'm the worst out of my groups and I SUCK at super mario ect..)

Hellraiser: Didn't take too long to be honest, I really don't remember how long I dedicated to it, maybe a day or two on a weekend.
As for the difficulty of the Genesis one, it's WAY easier than any game in the series that I've played. I beat it a while back, it's much more forgiving.
Happeh: The second quest is significantly more difficult and absolutely necessary to "beat" the game. The speed at which characters move (especially in the second level) is literally 3-4 faster than the first time around.
I haven't played this game in quite some time, but I think I'm able to get to Level 2 without having a rage fit. I was able to make it to level 4 or 5 in Super Ghouls and Ghosts without cheating tho.

I've completed both loops many times. Actually this past Halloween I did so on the arcade version (Capcom Classics Collection this time) and two years ago I went through the NES version for the same occasion.
Yes, it's hard, but your reflexes pick up the more you play.

Well I suppose I have a reason to play it again now, jerk.

I have seen my cousin get close to the end in the arcade version, you are sent back to the start of the map and there is a new weapon which appears that you have to get to the end with (all over again),He is good at games though, i have never seen anybody so determined to beat games in my life-i on the other hand are pants at most games.
I can get to level 4 first time around (past blue brick level) after you fight a dragon (chinese type)

I can't believe you get a "HAPPY ENDING!" by completing Ghost n Goblins!!??!!
The knight even has less clothes. I made it to the stage 4 or 5. What ever the stage that has you running and jumping up-hill. That level has some jumps that I could not get.
...btw here is a level cheat that I found online:
At the title screen do the following: Hold down Right, press B 3x then press Up, and release it. Press B 3 more times. Press Left, then release and press B 3 more times. Press Down, release, then press B 3 more times. Finally press Start

I've finished it before. The last level before the final boss is a nightmare, it always takes me 30 minutes to an hour or more to do it.
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is easy in comparison to Ghosts 'n Goblins IMO. The only levels I found hard are level 4 (genuinely hard, esp. on higher difficulties) and level 7 (mostly due to time crunch, there isn't much time to beat the two bosses at the end). Even if you die, you can collect continues easily by picking up money bags.

Most difficult part of the game, hands down. A cyclops and dragon 20 seconds into the start of the level. Then Red Arremers / Firebands all over the place. Get to the top and you have a pair of devils as the boss. Satan is easy in comparison to the two levels before him.

Near the end of Stage 6 for me. I either run out of time, or I have Red Arremers all over the place bumping into me.

Me three, this part is hands down the most difficult part of the game.

As good as I always was at these types of games, I never made it to the end of level 3, even after all these years. This game validates the phrase "hard as a bitch."
'Cause it sure is.

On one credit, stage 3 sometimes stage 4, even stage 6 before that credit runs out of lives. With credit feeding and free time on either Saturn, PSX or PS 2 (Capcom Generation 2 first two, Capcom Classics Collection 1 last one), both quests.
NES version seems a tad easier than the arcade version, but free time again and endurance I've finished it a few times long ago.
For Ghouls, be it PS2, PSX, Saturn, or Genesis, patience and endurance will get you through, like others have said, it's not nearly as punishing. A trend though is all have to beaten twice, even the last one on PSP (and the Wonderswan one is quite nice), all require some kind of special weapon to beat, except Gokumakaimura Kai.

I like the game but suck bad on it, only seem to get about 1/2 of level one, at best; so nice game but too bloody hard!

Not a fan of Ghosts n Goblins due to its insane difficulty from the start. Even though I've rarely played it, I've gotten past the first level. Never got any further.

If this is the NES version, the first Red Devil in Level 1 usually sends me home in a body bag.

This game positively destroys me... The best I've ever done is level 3 and then my progress just stops dead.
Anyone who says "Super GnG" is the hard one in the series hasn't played this.

In that link I discuss where I finally beat Ghosts and Goblins for the NES, Arcade, and then Adventure Island. I needed torture, and I needed it badly at the time. Man, did it feel good to finally beat them sumbitches.
For a harder challenge than Ghosts and Goblins (and a lot more fun, with just as much gothic awesomeness), I present, Holy Diver:

The funny thing is it seems like I can get further in Holy Diver than in G&G. I've done better at Battletoads even... Nearly finished it once. G&G is just brutal. I can pass level 1 80%, and 2 if I get in zen-zone or get damn lucky - That roughly translates into "I've seen level 3 a few times."
Now that I think of it, rbudricks avatar is perfect for the start of G&G lvl 3. Instant bat rape, just add Arthur.

I can usually make it to the second part of level 1 but the flying hotdogs with pitchforks usually finish me off.

I beat it back in 1993 after years of playing it at least 1-2 times a week. Super G&G is a piece of cake in comparison, beat that one after a couple months.

I know in the arcade I could get to the end of Level 5 but couldn't beat the boss. The game is ridiculously hard. You just don't have the speed and weaponry to handle these bosses that move so fast. Also, that level forced you to start from the beginning if you lost a life. Didn't really play the NES version that much.

I know, I'm reviving an old thread, but I LIKE this thread, so nyah! ;)
To reply to the above, Holy Diver treats you not much worse than a tough Castlevania title unitl the 4th boss....then it gets refuckingdiculous. It fishes you in, then consumes your soul. It hates you, but makes you love it in return.
