View Full Version : Huge game playing goals

About 6 months ago, I saw a link somewhere (might've been here or RFGen or possibly just a related link from God knows where or a Google search) to a person's blog about how he was on a quest to play every single console game ever made in order of release. I was just wondering if anyone knew the blog I was talking about.
I also was wondering what people thought about a goal like that, maybe just to start some interesting discussion. I realize (and this guy also realized) that the human life isn't long enough to actually accomplish this mission, but maybe he'll give it a worthy effort.
I had the idea to play through every RPG ever made (not necessarily in chronological order) once. But I gave up, not because of the enormous scale of the undertaking, but because I realized it wasn't worth playing through so many terrible and even mediocre games.
So I guess my take on it is that it is fun to talk about, but in practice its much easier to take on smaller ideas like playing through an entire series or all the games of one genre on a single system or something like that.
Well any other thoughts/accomplishments/attempts anyone wants to discuss?

My thoughts are that if you use an emulator and download games you can at least try out every console game ever made up to more recent generations, but to play through each one all the way would be a bit too tedious to do.
Then once you got to the 32-bit era and certain systems were not able to be emulated well due to limited emulation capabilities (Jaguar CD, struggling with Saturn emulators and N64 emulation for roms that don't work correctly) , you might have to actually start putting in financial effort into acquiring games which makes the process take even longer.
For systems before Nintendo though, it is pretty easy to cover hundreds of games in one day with their quick arcade-like style. I think for this goal, there needs to be a cut-off point. Like list the consoles you want to include in this and go from there.
The 70s and early 80s can be knocked off rather quickly, but once you get into the late 80s it will get longer and longer. Once you hit the mid 90s, the Playstation itself will laugh at you for even attempting to play through all of its 1000+ in depth titles.
Oh yeah also he should have remembered that it will also take precious time looking up the information that shows the actual release date of each title.
That was a good one about deciding against playing through every single RPG. There are some RPGs out there that have unbearable graphics or bad play control or menu systems.
A good plan to set is use emulators to try out every game. When you come across a game that actually seems fun, write it down and keep going. When you are done, you will have a nice shopping list to use. When you get to modern games, it sucks but you have to go by reviews, reputation or gameplay videos on youtube etc to know if its good or not.
Its an idea I thought of trying out but the super high prices on some of the pre-Nintendo stuff can be a bit outrageous. $200 for a Fairchild Channel F game that is going to entertain you for a few minutes at a time seems a bit crazy unless you are nearing the end of a specific collection that needs to include them.

I wouldn't make a goal like that, at most I would want to play every good game that was made. There's just no way to play every game made, and why would you really want to? I have better things to do with my time than try to play everything.

I agree that experiencing every game ever made is probably a more reachable goal. Unfortunately, though I have some Atari 2600 stuff, I'm not really interested in much pre-NES/SMS stuff. I guess that would actually be fortunate for a ridiculous goal like that.
And yes Chronogamer was definitely the blog I was talking about. Thanks for the link.

Actually sitting down and playing a FULL 162-baseball game season without simulating a single game is a reasonable enough goal for anyone who plays sports games.
Sick thing is I've done this at least a couple of times in the Genesis-era.

I remember trying to do this on more than one game SNES/Genesis stuff to no avail. Of course, they were always rentals and I just didn't have enough time. :D

Yeah, it sounds like you've stumbled upon the efforts of mezrabad. Other efforts have sprung up in his wake, with the best being Dr. Sparkle's Chrontendo (http://chrontendo.blogspot.com/), which is trying to play through every NES/FDS/Famicom game in order of Japanese release, in addition to his Chronsega and Chronturbo efforts with the Master System and Turbo Grafx.

Was this the guy who labelled himself a "Cronogamer"?
So how you gonna play official releases which are very hard to find and not emulated?
got a spare $32000 for Air Raid?

I'd find it more interesting to play a game on every system made, still a pretty pricey and time consuming venture though.

I'm fairly certain Air Raid is actually emulated, it doesn't look very fun however.

A ROM is available to download.
You can even play it with an online emulator. I think it's terrible.

I once did a complete FA Premiership season in 5-minute each-way games on FIFA 98. That's 380 games. It lasted longer than an actual premiership season, lol.
