Super hydlide final boss impossible?

I've been on a kick of playing through some of my favorate genesis games (and let me tell you there are very few) one game that always stumped me as a kid was super hydlide I never really could get anywhere in it but loved the gameplay system. I felt the game was way ahead of its time, it was just well...HARD. so I decided to give it a shot and have made it all the way to the final boss


HE WON'T FUCKING DIE!

I looked up faqs and hints online and they say to knock his legs out with the firesword then jump in his mouth and he SHOULD die if you have at least half your life left, I'm having no luck with this strategy as he just kiills me no matter how much life I have left. I really want to finish this game but the boss has me completely stumped. has anyone else beaten this game and have any advice? (i'll even post my save state if anyone wants to see what i'm doing wrong)

Hah, I think my fiance is in the same boat. Got up to the very end but never did finish it off. If other people have claimed to beat it, then I doubt it's impossible (well, I would doubt that regardless), but knowing that game, I imagine it is ridiculously hard. Sorry I can't give any tips, but good luck. :)

This happened to me on the original Hydlide for NES. I completed everything and then the stupid dragon at the castle was indestructible, though I had my levels as high as they would go. I called the NOA Game Play Counselors and the guy was stumped. He couldn't help. Years later I had no such issue on playing back through it. Must be a Hydlide thing.
