Delete Paper Mario... I've been playing it all day, and I think it sucks. This review pretty much sums up my thoughts:
"Take Out Square and Everything Goes To Hell"
(Super Mario RPG, subtract any and all fun, equals Paper Mario)
"Graphics: 7.5/10
"Part of me wants to give this category a 10 for the ultra-creative paper effect. The other part of me wants to give it a 5 for its dullness and inferiority when compared to the incredible 3D models of Super Mario RPG. I'll compromise at a 7.5.
"Music: 5.5
"Yep, you guessed it...childish. If you're looking for happy, sweet music that would fit great in your infant's mobile, look no further. Again, it only gets points for having a little bit of original Mario music in it. (And when I say a little bit, I MEAN a little bit! In fact, I could only find one track of original music!) [I also miss the peppy battle music from Mario RPG -Troy]
"Gameplay: 0/10
"Ok, here's where everything DIES.
"First, the game is WAY too easy. The puzzles are nearly non-existent. (You flip a switch, reveal a staircase, climb and find another switch, flip it and find another staircase, and so on). Next, the battle system...what happened? You can pick only ONE partner to assist Mario. These stupid little helpers CANNOT take damage and CANNOT level up, so it's all on Mario here. When Mario dies, the game ends, with nothing happening to your helper. Geez, just because Mario is dead doesn't mean that they can't attack! Plus, not one really fights better than the other, eliminating the strategy of varied party members you could have in Mario RPG. (e.g. having Geno for his strong attacks and Princess Toadstool for her magic healing powers).
"Speaking of magic, there is none in this game! No healing, no offensive spells, NOTHING! Just attack, attack, attack though the whole damn game! Magic is good because it adds variety rather than just attacking physically, and because curing can be a massive part of strategy!
"In conclusion, I realized that Paper Mario is a lot like Yoshi's Story and Kirby 64; they all are poor successors to awesome SNES games. This is why many people play their SNES more than their N64. The bottom line is that Paper Mario will never hold a candle to one of Squaresoft's SNES predecessor!"

dump shadows of the empire- add body harvest (excellent, underrated game)
paper mario stays, i say...
i'd actually petition for a 50 game list for the n64, as it seems that too many message boards i've peeked at complain about the system not having good games, or continue to harp on the same old stuff being "the best". that said and done here are some that deserve more recognition:
hybrid heaven
shadowgate 64
space station silicon valley
rayman 2
rocket: robot on wheels
goemon's great adventure
penny racers
harvest moon 64
resident evil 2
ogre battle 64
indiana jones & the infernal machine

F-Zero X is good. Leave that...Mario Kart, also good. I say delete blast corp for pokemon stadium 2. Paper Mario should stay, I agree. I'd also say to get rid of Wave Race for StarFox 64, but thats me.
Sega Hitman

Maybe a 50 game list would be best. Another one that nobody has mentioned that I really liked was the first Mystical Ninja game. I haven't played it in years, so it may not have aged well, but I remeber enjoying the hell out of that.
Is Body Harvest really that good that it deserves to be in the Top 20? I've never played it, but the Meijer's near me still has them for $10. Is it worth it?

body harvest was developed by dma designs, the folks who eventually did a couple of games in a slightly popular series called grand theft auto. the gameplay in bh is a mix of gta (jump into any vehicle and go almost anywhere), metroid (kill bugs of varying sizes, move onto giant boss), and a few rpg elements (lots of npc's to talk to, folks to rescue, etc). the game isn't the best LOOKING n64 game, but the excellent gameplay makes up for it.
in other words, for 10 bucks, it's a BARGAIN. enjoy it (it's also one of the longest games on the system).
also pick up space station silicon valley- dma did the honors on this as well, and it's another underrated classic (well, next gen gave it 5 of 5 stars, but how many people were reading that mag back then, lol)...[/quote]

I'll update this tonight, but ... theaveng... I have to say I disagree with almost every one of your "substitutions". You're killing off some of the forum's most demanded games (see prior thread) to make room for some "out of the blue" titles. Tell us why you're dropping one for another. Your debate on Paper Mario is good, and I think that's going to be the first to get knocked off of the current list.

I suggest you delete excitebike. It's the worst motor'racing' game I've ever played. The control is terrible, the Music/sound is very annoying and the graphics are so/so.
And please leave Paper Mario on it. It's the only N64 title I kinda enjoyed.

Delete Mario Kart 64.
Delete F-Zero X.

DIDDY KONG
-you must place first on each of the world's four tracks, then race that world's boss.
-Once you've beaten the boss, you must go back through the world's four tracks and you get to race the boss again
-THEN you race all four tracks yet AGAIN
-Sound horribly tedious? YES.
-after beating Space World, you unlock Adventure 2, and race all the tracks in reverse! (GROAN)
-boring, boring, boring
MARIO KART 64
-Quoting a review: "History has shown us plenty of titles that featured the very best sound and graphics money could buy which still somehow ended up being not much fun to play. Mario Kart 64... single-play mode is just too easy. This is due in part to the game's extra wide tracks, and in part to the poor AI routines - which deliver opponents who seem more like they're on their way to the local convenience store than in an all-out race for the finish line. The result is that players can (and do) drive around for minutes without even spotting an opponent - much less getting a chance to score a hit. None of these problems ever really destroys the game entirely, but they do make it more difficult to get excited about picking up the controller for more than a handful of races....
Mario Kart 64 is very likely to disappoint you after about a week. I wouldn't feel right about not giving you that warning. That said, I'm off to Mario Kart on my SNES to reminisce about the good old days, and dream of what this cartridge could have been. --Trent C. Ward, gamespot.com"
F-ZERO X:
-Vehicles are uninspiring and tracks are spartan
-Music is cheesy synthesized-metal
-Overall the game is bland... it leaves no desire to come back
SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE
-The first level is fantastic... and then it takes a crash dive into the Death Star.
-Control is poor. Ditto the camera
-We already have the superior Rogue Squadron...we don't need this title there.
MARIO GOLF/ WWF No Mercy
- I just don't like sports games... and I HATE wrestling. It's fake. And the people are revolting. If I'm going to watch something fake, I'll watch a high-production movie with loveable characters.
WAVE RACE
- Racing in a boat doesn't appeal to me

i dunno. using someone else's bad (or good) review of a game to justify one's like (or dislike) for a particular title is sorta...off, don't you think? especially if a game like paper mario or even mario kart received mostly reviews in their favor. i'd rather hear why a person posting didn't like a game rather than what amounts to: "my best friend's second cousin's dogwalker said this game was bad- so i don't like it either!". validate by YOUR experience, not by the guy down the street, i say...
now if it were tripe like battlezone: rise of the back fogs (lol), getting the nod for a slot on the list, i'd have to yell at someone or something.
that said and done, indy racing league :?: no way :!: f1 world championship is not only the better game (visually and control-wise), it's probably the best pure racing game on the system whether you like F1 games or not. the tv-style presentation in the replays & the multiple driving viewpoints make the game a decent simulation, and when you toss in those weather effects...brilliant...=^P

Pokemon Stadium is absolute crap. Okay, I'll admit, I haven't played 2, but the first on was the single most excruciatingly boring experience of my life. Even if the sequel is better, there's no way it should be included over other games. Like...Mischief Makers, or Donkey Kong 64, or Quake II.
I can't complain about WWF, but I think it should be a different installment...maybe Wrestlemania?
Also, I'm at a total loss as to Diddy Kong Racing's appeal...but then, I seem to be in the minority there.
And thank god you didn't snub Perfect Dark. Not only does it blow Goldeneye away, it's the best game on the system, IMHO...can you say "infinite replay value"? :D

If Paper Mario is so great, how come no one's buying my $19 copy off Ebay?
Probably because they know it sucks. :-(
I gave up on the game at hour 13, and then used the previous owner's save game to fast-forwarded to the final battle with Bowser... which was patehtically easy. I've played worse games... but not many.

I'll give you my support for Tetrisphere--easily my favorite game for the N64. Damn addicting play, fun multiplayer, and the puzzles get really challenging after a while. Plus, it keeps track of time spent on the individual puzzles and has interesting "throw-ins" like bombs and chain guns to clear away pieces. Challenges like "Crystal Tower" make this game even more fun and interesting to play.
This game takes a bit to learn, but once you do, its tough to put away. My brother thought this game was crap until I showed him how it works. He's since gone out and bought his own copy because I was tired of him playing mine!
I say take out Diddy Kong Racing. It was a good concept the first time around--it was called Mario Kart 64. The addition of airplanes and hovercraft didn't add anything to the gameplay, and overall I felt like it was a sub-par attempt at trying to milk more money out of the Donkey Kong franchise.

If it's any consolation, theaveng, I'd buy it if I had any money at all. Which I don't.
Oh, and NE146, I love the icon. Most twisted game EVER :D
I'd also like to drop another game into the hat: Jet Force Gemini. Not as polished as some other Rare efforts, but there's definitely something to be said for spraying bug guts around a room with your machine gun. Too bad there are way too many of Rare's patented horribly out of the way fetch quests (tm, r, all rights reserved) But the Mr. Pants cheat makes it all worth it :D

First line: "Shipping: FREE"
Duh.
You raise a good point about the box though. Still, I don't think $19 is an outrageous price when a brand-new Paper Mario costs $50.

My vote goes towards removing Starfox64 and adding San Francisco Rush.
I played Starfox to completion but it never had that wow factor for me. I was just glad to be finished with it. It certainly wasn't as re-imagined as the other big franchises (Mario, Zelda).
I'd add San Francisco Rush because it's one of the few games that I'll go back and play. And it passes the guest rule. If a guest comes back and requests to play it again then I'm forced to believe it's something special. My most recent example of this would be Super Monkey Ball. My thinking is that, since I do pay attention to the buzz online and read magazines, sometimes my likes/dislikes can be tainted by what is *supposed* to be good. The guest test keeps you grounded in what's simply fun to pick up and play. No hype.

Wow, i've voted out nine of the twenty games! Well, here are by picks to replace them.
1. Pokemon Puzzle League. The best game for the system, without question. It one-ups Tetris Attack for the SNES in every way possible. For being addictive, playable, and enjoyable, you can't beat this game.
2. Tetrisphere. It's an outrage that this game hasn't been added.
3. Dr. Mario 64. The four player mode is good even if slightly too small.
4. Mischief Makers. Shake Shake. Shake Shake. YAAAAA! It's 2-D fun.
5. Pilotwings 64. Even though the frame rate is bad, it's just fun to fly around sometimes.
6. Castlevania. I don't get all the hate for this game. I really enjoyed it.
7. Mario Party 3. Very fun. Mario's Puzzle Party is worth the price alone.
8. Bomberman 64. Another really fun game, and I for one actually enjoy the multiplayer.
9. San Fransisco Rush. No explaination, it's just fun.

The list has some really sub-par games, and is missing the really big technical achievement games, that happen to be much more fun and involving than say Diddy Kong Racing.
-Banjo Kazooie should go.
-Diddy Kong Racing should definitely go.
-Conkers Bad Fur Day should leave too. Adult my ass, this is an adult game in the sense that, if I was 10 years old, this is what I would think adult was. Fart jokes and pissing on things...ha ha, hee hee...yawn. Another lame platformer for the N64 in the end. Find item, unlock door, defeat boss.
-F-Zero should leave. Good framerate. NO OPTIONS, just like the original. BORING.
-Space Station Silicon Valley...was this really better than Body Harvest?
-Mystical Ninja 64. This should leave. Give us a break already.
-Wave Race. A technical acheivment, but it really doesn't have much to it. Kinda boring really. bye bye to this one.
-WWF No Mercy. Take it away please. There are so many damn wrestling games that are so much the same, none should be on the list.
-Mario Tennis should leave the list too. I love Tennis, but come on, every single Mario game doesn't have to be on the list, likewise, every Mario game isn't good enough to be on this list. Nintendo wasn't the best publisher for the N64.
Ok, after much bitching and complaining on the above games that I think should disappear from this list, here are the ones I think should stay and are good selections:
-Blast Corps
-Beetle Adventure Racing
-Mario 64: The first N64 platformer. This makes it immune to the criticism of "ugghh, another 3-d platformer with horrendous controls?"
-Paper Mario
-Goldeneye
-Perfect Dark--The only technical achievment game on the list worthy of being here.
-Star Wars RS
-Starfox 64
-Zelda MM
-Zelda OoT
And now, here are my picks for games to be ADDED to this WEAK ASS LIST of games.(Did any of you actually give the N64 a chance?) ADD THESE GAMES:
-STARCRAFT 64. WTF? 512mb cart, containing the original PC game, including the Broodwar expansion if you have a N64 Expansion Pack. Hi-Res graphics show up beautifully on an HDTV. An awesome port of 2 PC games packed into a Cartridge, with head to head multiplay option. This version of SC stayed true to the gameplay of the PC in every aspect, and the N64 controller had enough buttons to handle the user interface just fine.
-RUSH 2049: I picked this Rush game because its easily the best one. The steering controls were dramatically improved over the original, the graphics were actually sharp and crisp this version, and the original music is worthy of a soundtrack CD. More shortcuts and jumps than the previous two games, and really just better overall track design. More stunt tracks, also it has 4 player Battle Mode, Twisted Metal style. Yet Diddy Kong I'm 6 years old Racing is still on the list.
OGRE BATTLE 64: YET ANOTHER 512 mb Cartridge not on the list! Why is this not on the list? I see so many people on these boards talk about Ogre Battle this, Tactics Ogre that, yet Ogre Battle 64 isn't on the best of list? A good mixture, and fairly original mix of RTS and RPG make this a standout in the weak library of Role Playing games on the N64. Actually, OG64 is the closest thing to an RPG on the machine, and its a damn good one at that. Oh I forgot, Banjo I just turned 3 Kazooie has to be on the list.
NUCLEAR STRIKE 64: The N64 was weak on action strategy games like this, and this version is better than its PS counterpart because it has no load times, plus it has Hi-Res mode for Expansion Pak owners. Straight up awesome sound fx puts you in the action. Only thing missing were the FMV sequences, but who cares, you skip those after the first viewing anyway. Alot more entertaining and action packed than Conkers Bad Game.
Thanks for listening.

After getting Body Harvest today, I have to say that this one MUST be on the list. It looks awful, but it's undeniably a blast to play. No Mercy is a given, no questions there. It's the greatest wrestling engine ever concieved and regardless of your thoughts on the SPORT of pro wrestling, the game is a blast.

Tetrisphere was indeed a great game and deserves a spot.
Also, I say drop No Mercy for WrestleMania 2000. No Mercy might have played better, but WM2000 had the better create-a-wrestler, and stuff like create-a-belt and create-a-PPV. Good times!

I played alot of N64 during my time since it's release and since my topic was locked, I'll just put it here because Joe and others were nice enough to point out that a thread was already created
I find the lack of either of the Banjo-Kazooie games in the top 25 disturbing.

I'd take out conker's or pokemon puzzle and add jet force gemini. That was always one my favorite 64 games. Other than that's a very good list.

Remove Excitebike. Put F-1 World Grand Prix in its place.

I'm pissed until Quest 64 is added to the top list.
no one has love for this epic game
though it was probably right behind Ogre Battle and Zelda as far as action/adventure/rpg greatness on the N64.

In March, I made a thread of the best and worst rated Nintendo 64 games:
Top 50 and Bottom 25 Nintendo 64 games list (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114086)
Check it out! :)

Holy crap...
anyone who has not played WM2000 or WWF No Mercy have not played the best wrestling games ever.
Seriously. No wrestler on any system before or since has come close. Perfect controls. Straight up perfect. I spent SO many hours on WM2000 and this is from someone that doesn't follow the shows that much.
Really, just plain ol' fun.
I'll second a motion to keep Mario Tennis on the list, I found it way more come-back-to-playable over golf.
This is an old thread but wow. I'm shocked by some people's opinions.

According to review scores, those wrestling games are ranked #25 in the top 50 N64 games (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114086).
Mario Tennis is a fun game, but I enjoyed Mario Golf more. The N64 and GameCube games are fantastic. Supposedly, the GBC and GBA versions are great, too.
I hope after Wii MotionPlus comes out, Nintendo will make a Wii version!

Agree.
Snowboard kids is a must in the top 25. Best "racer" on the N64, other then Mario Kart.

body harvest was developed by dma designs, the folks who eventually did a couple of games in a slightly popular series called grand theft auto. the gameplay in bh is a mix of gta (jump into any vehicle and go almost anywhere), metroid (kill bugs of varying sizes, move onto giant boss), and a few rpg elements (lots of npc's to talk to, folks to rescue, etc). the game isn't the best LOOKING n64 game, but the excellent gameplay makes up for it.
Body Harvest is fun!

Goemon's Great Adventure is a great game. It's also one of the very few 2-D platformers on the system.
Diddy Kong Racing > Mario Kart 64. There, I said it, and I hold to it.

Diddy Kong Racing had depth to it, Mario Kart was lame by comparison.
Personally I rather liked Body Harvest and Hybrid Heaven but I'd be hard pressed to make a top 25.

At least one of the Mario Party games should be on there. It has Smash bros, goldeneye, and Zelda OOT though, so the rest of the list can be forgiven.

There is no way i could compile a top 25 games on the N64 it would more likely be a top 10,but on the first list i agree with and would keep:-
Perfect Dark,Goldeneye,Mario 64,Mario Kart 64,Star Wars-Rogue Squadron and then add:-
Turok
Turok 2
F-Zero X
Quake II
Resident Evil 2
Vigilante 8
