I have an issue with a Gameboy Color I am trying to repair.

All the buttons work except for the right button on the D-pad.

So I opened it up had a look at the contacts for the buttons and gave them a good clean even though they still looked reasonably clean, closed it up again and the right button still didn't work.

So had another look at it, tested to see if there was any issues with the buttons not connctecting properly to the board, all seemed fine..

so I can't see anything obviously wrong with it, are there any other ideas of what I could do to fix this?

I work in a charity shop and this is a gameboy that came in, so trying to repair it so it can be resold and don't really want to have to throw it in for waste electronics.

Don't throw it away. If anything, save it for parts.

Did you test continuity on the trace for the bad button?

sadly I don't have a multitester or even know anyone who has one, so can't check for that.

I would think anyone who sells used electronics should have a multimeter on hand, and learn to use it for simple functions such as continuity or voltage detection.

Test the pad. Under the buttons sits a rubber piece with pads on the bottom, that creates a bridge between the two leads, that tells the gbc the button was pressed. Try rotating that rubber piece so that a different pad is being used for the right d.

If the button trace is good, and the button pad is ok, I don't know what else it could be other than a problem with the ic that controls the button states.
