I by no means have a huge collection of games but I got most of the basics.
Its cool havin my gamer friends over to bask in that old school glow. Its even better havin people over that havent played in years like me! It seems though most of the time all that people want to play is smb1, smb3 and mario cart!!!

Great games like turtles iv , the contras and sat. night slam masters get over looked even when I try to suggest them on the sly. I know that epics like mega man 2 , ninja gaiden and blaster master dont really work during a party because of the one player thing but come on, smb 1 every time?:frustrated:

The street fighter and mortal kombat games are cool. But thoes games are for a select few because they turn into a crap talking cuss/swear fest!!! LOL
After all these years people take there fighting game skills very serious!!! Plus you get one or two people who know what there doing it pretty much shuts out the novice players.

Any 8 or 16 bit suggestions guys? Christmas partys and new years are right around the corner and while I love them I dont want to get stuck playing the same old Mario games...

Any 2D Bomberman title, basically. NBA Jam TE. I also liked Looney Tunes B-Ball on SNES. Check out FireStriker for something a bit different. On the JP side, Battle Cross works well as do any of the Bomberman clones, i.e. Super Tekkyu Fight!, Otoboke Ninja Coloseum, Spark World, and Puzzle N'Desu has a nifty little 4 player battle mode. For more info on these games, click on the Obscure SFC section on my website (see sig).

Usually I'll throw on Mario Kart 64 for my tv, and maybe i'll turn on my gamecube kiosk unit and play some 4 player wrestlemania 18 or 19.

When I have company over that plays games, Bomberman is usually the game that gets played. In the more recent years it's been Jetters, for the Gamecube.

Typically, San Francisco Rush 2049 is the "go-to" game.

NES: I've got friends who aren't big into sports games or sports in general, but we always have one hell of a time playing "Blades of Steel" (winner stays up or whatever). Its simple, games are quick, plus you get to literally whip your buddies ass (get into fights on the ice). "Jackal" is a pretty fun two player game. "Sky Shark" and "Battletoads" are good two player games if you want some challenge. Mega Man games can still be alot of fun with multiple players. Just pass the control once someone dies/completes a stage. This goes for alot of other 1 player games. Tecmo Bowl is great as well. River City Ransom is a fun beat 'em up.

SNES: If they really like the classic marios, you could get froggy and suggest Super Mario World. It would at least be something different from the originals, lol. You could also go with the Donkey Kong Country games. They are a bit harder than the mario games, which is nice. If not Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter, you could give Killer Instinct a shot. Maybe many of them haven't played it before and everyone would be on a similar competition level. I've gotten enjoyment out of taking turns with a group of friends playing Super Punch-Out!!! as well. Can't believe they won't bite on Turtles in Time!!! You may just need to slap them first, lol. Final Fight is a nice beat 'em up as well.

Genesis: Classic Sonic games are fairly enjoyable with a group. NBA Jam is nice (even if your not into sports games). Not sure what else... Bonanza Brothers is fun with two people (play as two burglars robbing various facilities). General Chaos and Mutant League Football are also very fun games.

N64: Super Smash Bros and GoldenEye are classic party games. Perfect Dark is pretty fun as well. Wave Race is also alot of fun. Mario Party games are alot of fun (even if IGN doesn't think so...bastards).

Hmm...Its possible to get multiple people involved in just about any game. I would just convince your friends to try a games and if they don't like it, simply try something else. Doesn't take long to switch out a cart after all. Hopefully, they will get hooked on something besides the usual. Good Luck to you!

You want to play a good fighting game that's noob-friendly and fun as hell?
Street Fighter Alpha 3 for Dreamcast with 3 player dramatic battle mode is the shit.
It's just nuts because it's 2on1 and perfect for mixed skill levels.

Bombastic is a great party game. Anything that gets people talking loud and competing at the same time. Of course, Worms is a classic but its turn based. Not always great in every crowd.

It's pretty rare that anyone will be over to play games, let alone classics.

For modern stuff, "Scene It" for the 360 seems to be the game of choice.

But back in ye olde days, Mega Bomberman and Puzzle Fighter were the games of choice.

One of my favorite New Year's Eve party memories was the only time I had enough people and controllers on hand for 10 player Saturn Bomberman. It was epic to say the least. :)

The PSX is the console of choice whenever there's a party at my place. We mostly play fighting games...Street Fighter Alpha 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Tekken 3. Metal Slug X is also a party favorite.

Excelent tips, dude! It reminds me it's time to start looking for Looney Tunes B-Ball again...it's one my all-time favorite basketball games! And the only Bomberman I got is the first one for the NES...another mistake I have to correct. And, of course, gotta find a multitap!

You gotta check out Micro Maniacs for PSX. Super fun 4-player racing game. It's on-foot but it plays just like the older Micro Machines games (well, with a few twists, like jumping).

Seriously? Nobody even mentioned PowerStone 2 (even 1) on DC. Those are awesome party games.

Rock Band is always an easy one.

Also 2 or more player arcade games are a huge plus if you own any (I can flip on either some VF: Remix or Die Hard Arcade and get people near constantly playing it)

As far as fighting games go, I think Marvel vs. Capcom for the Dreamcast is pretty good, with it's 4-Player tag matches. It beats Smash Bros. in my group of friends.

A lot of my favorites were already mentioned, so I'll add some lesser favourites like Kings of the Beach and Sonic Shuffle.

No mention of Zhadnost? Appalling.Of the two, I'd rather play Twisted. It really sucks the way other players controllers work during your turn in those games though.

at my parties we always end up playing Spawn: In the Demon's Hand on DC.
the long matches always allow for close games, and the different visibilities and levels mix it up really well.

other favorites:
Kirby Super Star
Guardian Heroes
Gunstar Heroes
Mega Man series
Star Wars Battlefront 1,2
War of the Monsters
Bleach Blade Battlers 2nd

Twisted is also great, but it seems like Zhadnost has more replay value. I own four controllers so we don't have to pass them around, but yeah, that's really annoying.

What I mean is that you can literally control someone else's game when it's their turn. When someone else is making a selection or playing through a challenge, you have the ability to interrupt their game with button presses (if you're unscrupulous). IRC, every controller registers activity, all the time. Try it and see. It's just plain lazy programming.

Dang! Forgot about that one.
It's always a hit.
I like it better than twisted, just due to the weird communist subject matter.

You dont know Jack on PS1 is one that gets pulled out often, too.

I usually pull out a few:

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: Michael Jackson Edition(this dude took the Dreamcast version and replaced all the music with Michael Jackson hits)

WWF No Mercy(N64)

Marvel vs. Street Fighter(MAME360)

Wheel of Fortune(NES)

Ms. Pac Man(2600)

Dig Dug(2600)

Wii Sports(Wii)

Wii Sports Resort(Wii)

Basically, it depends which system is out or what people want to play the most. Basically, No Mercy and Marvel vs Capcom 2 are the two that get played the most...

If you have an Atari 2600, try Kaboom. Everyone, young and old, can grasp the concept of this game. "Catch the bombs in the water buckets as they fall from above." Fun to watch people play this game at parties.

And if you are having a Christmas party, why not try MEAN SANTA for the Atari 2600... it fits the christmas -time - of - year - setting for playing video games. Again, a basic concept: "steal as many toys as you can from the houses you visit."

MEAN SANTA is available for sale, and you can order it & get it before the holidays in the mail.

More info on the web site:
