The wife surprised me this year with a classic Mario themed tree. I always have game themed holiday gifts, especially for Easter (http://box422.bluehost.com/~videogc7/forum/showthread.php?t=143114), but this is the first game themed tree that she's done.

Here's a close up of some of what's going on with it:

I should have known something was up when she told me not to bother making a little tree for my game room when I mentioned it last week, since we were going out of town for the holidays. Yet she insisted on putting one up herself after I went to bed.

Awesome indeed. You are happily married, sir - in fact, after my last two years, it's nice to know there are still couples like that in the world!

Awesome indeed. You are happily married, sir - in fact, after my last two years, it's nice to know there are still couples like that in the world!Oh, we have tons of issues, but we're still friends through it all, and we love to do meaningful things for one another. Even if we eventually part ways some day, I think we'll always be close.

Heh, ironically, being close to my ex's is one of the main issues we have. ^^;

At any rate, I hope you can work through whatever problems you've been having the past 2 years.

Dear Lord... It's not even the end of November and somebody decorated a Christmas Tree?! God... And this one has a Mario-themed decoration. How ugly.

Yeah, I don't know how You celebrate Christmas in the US, but here in Poland it is all about religion. Although mass media are making those holidays more and more commercial.

Maybe I'm just too conservative...

That, sir, is a fantastic bush.

Also, giant star is giant! Good thing that is an artificial tree, lest it start to bend under the weight of that supermassive topper!

Dear Lord... It's not even the end of November and somebody decorated a Christmas Tree?!Um, when exactly is the end of November on your calender?

God... And this one has a Mario-themed decoration. How ugly. Thanks!

Yeah, I don't know how You celebrate Christmas in the US, but here in Poland it is all about religion. That explains a lot, actually.

Although mass media are making those holidays more and more commercial.

Maybe I'm just too conservative...Or maybe you're just rude?

Good thing that is an artificial tree, lest it start to bend under the weight of that supermassive topper! That's what happened with my last tree...

Thats a awesome christmas tree!!!!!

and yes christmas is very commercial in north america (not just the us but in canada and mexico as well)

but the thing is we do it because it makes us feel good and the kids love it just like we loved it when we were kids.

Which is why alot jewish parents do the christmas holiday along with Hanukkah these days. Not really cause its Christian but its a time of the year for people to have fun. Enjoy family and friends and spread cheer

Excellent work. This tree may very well win Christmas for you. :hail:

Well, as far as I'm concerned, that tree has nothing to do with Christmas. I agree with Dred's post above....this tree is a complete travesty. I don't mean to be rude, but to a lot of people, seeing something decorated like that is actually quite offensive.

Some of the responses this tree is getting are pretty amusing.

For me November ended one hour ago.

Or maybe you're just rude?
No, I'm not. I only shared my opinion about it.

That's what I hate about US Christmas. It's all about making money, Satan Claus and other shit. Anybody from (for example) Toys 'R Us even care about the origin of those holydays?

I also don't understand, why do people celebrate Christmas, if they're not Christians.

Your tree looks fantastic man, and that's really awesome that you guys are able to personalize it so much, massive props!

You know, it might actually be cool to have a thread of fellow DP'ers Christmas trees later on once more people get theirs put up, I'd like to see what everyone does sometime.

By the way, getting the star up top must have been quite a feat!

I think the tree looks awesome! We celebrate Yule ourselves, and our tree has everything from Wizard of Oz ornaments to Hello Kitty to KISS. If we had some Mario themed ornaments, they would be on there too!

To the people griping about the tree....if you don't like it....move on to another thread!

I'm not christian and I celebrate christmas just like the Japanese do.
Don't let the prudes get to you. Dude. I totally approve of this. Fantastic!

Ever think it's because we enjoy it? There's no holiday gestapo forcing us to buy gifts for friends and family (and donating to those less privileged), we do it because we enjoy to do so. No armed guard makes us go out and put lights on our homes or play Christmas music, or bake cookies, etc. We celebrate the holiday season because we enjoy to do so. All that good will and cheer, being together, celebrating children - that's no different.

You could learn quite a bit about tolerance there buddy.

I see some houses around our neighbourhood already put up their tree weeks ago, I don't get why they're set up so early but I'm not really bothered by it. I can see the trees through their front windows. Traditionally the tree isn't supposed to be set up until a couple days before Christmas but that doesn't seem to stop people from setting it up early and keep it up until the end of winter. Even some houses keep outdoor Christmas lights going until spring comes, not just kept on the house but lit up.

Christmas trees weren't widely used until the 18th century, and it was originally considered to be a Protestant specific tradition. Santa Claus has been around centuries before that, his modern interpretation is really a merger of several figures from various folklore but his Christian origins date back to the 4th century celebrating Saint Nicholas(a real person who became a Christian saint).

As for why non-Christians would celebrate Christmas, it's a day meant to promote peace between all people and togetherness between family and friends. It's enjoyable to spend time with people while having delicious food, decorations, music, and exchanging some presents. Why not celebrate a holiday like that?

This is cool, I can see myself doing something like this. I do have enough stuff to do so, but I'm not a big Christmas person, working retail has ruined it for me.

We put the tree up as early as the day after Thanksgiving; the same time that the city puts the holiday lights and wreaths on the utility poles. I'm originally from New Orleans, but that's been the norm pretty everywhere I've lived.

I also don't understand, why do people celebrate Christmas, if they're not Christians."Ugly", "hate", "Satan", you seem to have a lot of pent up hostility, Dred. I won't pretend to understand why you're so bothered by the fact that others don't think and celebrate the way that you do, or why you seem to feel my Christmas tree is some unholy shrine to the commercial excesses of the Western world, but you're free to think and feel as you do.

As for the actual origin of the holiday, it has as many pagan ties as Christian ones. And like it or not, secular observation of the holiday is a long standing tradition the world over. As mentioned by another here, there are even a few Jews who celebrate Christmas to some extent. Fundamentalists don't have a monopoly on Christmas, and you don't have to be a Christian to appreciate the sentiment of love, solidarity, good will and hope.

Perhaps you should reach out to others with a proverbial olive branch, and try to find common ground, instead of taking such a hostile and disparaging tone with others who don't think exactly as you do. That's just my opinion.

I've basically been reading various Wikipedia articles describing various Christmas traditions, there's really so many different traditions based on different regions that it really doesn't matter anymore. From what I've read the tree should be set up on Christmas Eve if you open presents on Christmas Day, or it should be set up on the 23rd if you open presents on Christmas Eve. The tree shouldn't be up any longer than January 6th to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas. Supposedly it's considered bad luck if the tree is set up too early or left up too long. It's probably because people used to use real trees and often decorated them with real candles. Can you imagine what a real tree would look like if it was set up for over a month? It would probably be dried out and a real fire hazard by then.

I saw a Mario/Luigi ornament set one time, but those are the only Mario ornaments I had ever seen. To know there is a set is pretty cool and it looks great on your tree, Emperor Megas!

Now, I'll just have to find a set for my friend... or myself. :-D

Now, I'll just have to find a set for my friend... or myself. :-DNone of the decorations on the tree were actually ornaments. They're all re-purposed items, mostly keychains, and the rest capsule toys. My wife spend most of the night removing the hardware from the keychains, and stringing loops onto them. The Star Man plush topper is an import Mario Party toy (it has the Mario Party logo on the back, along with some Japanese text), and it only cost her 99¢, with free shipping! We already had the tree, the skirt, and the standard Christmas balls from a previous year, so there was no out of pocket expense for those.

The total amount for everything was $27.00 and change, but my wife got a $20.00 refund because some of the items weren't correct (they still worked though). All in all, the tree was done for less than $8.00, total (which makes the comments about rampant commercialism all the more ridiculous).

Thanks again everyone! I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think it's really fun. My wife and I really appreciate all of your kind words.
