View Full Version : What canceled/unreleased game would you like to see the light of day the most?

I liked the premise behind Carbondale. It was to take place in the real town of Carbondale, IL. They actually went to the town and mapped it out and everything, hoping to faithfully recreate the town. Aliens have landed during a nasty storm that makes it impossible to escape. You'd be fighting the aliens at the mall, the high school, city hall, everywhere. Weaponry was to be found items like baseball bats, sledgehammers, and so on. It was being developed by Hitmaker and was apparently the victim of the Sega-Sammy merger process.

I only recently learn several years ago that the above two titles were even in existance on a Nintendo hardware!
You reminded me of a game for the N64 I saw in Nintendo Power that I had always hoped would be released, thought was canned, and only recently found out was available in Japan: Last Legion UX. Not sure the game turned out to be any good, but at the time, it was probably my "most wanted" game.

Yes, I remember seeing an advertisment for Chester Field in Nintendo Power. It was supposed to be a Vic Tokai release. I think the Famicom did receive this game. It is kind of a Zelda II clone. Very interesting. I was eagerly anticipating this game as well.
The odd thing is that Chester Field actually got a US port to c64 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIpQvG-Oiog).

No. It was canceled at the last minute. I'm not sure if the version floating around on the internet is final or a very late beta, but it was definitely not released.

Can't quite remember. I know there's been rumours/claims of several people owning copies. I suppose if they were pressed, ready for release then a few copies would have made their way out.

Well, I am surprised that C64 got this! I have to say it looks pretty good for a C64 game. The NES should have gotten this game. The Famicom version looks great!!

advent rising 2 - the original is still one of my favorite games ever. it did 'force powers' 3 years before force unleashed and implemented them way, way better. unfortunately, its sales stunk, so majesco canceled the sequel. sucks doubly because it ends on a cliffhanger.

For me, it would be Super Mario 64 2. Still to this day do I ponder and question of what would have resulted. Ever since the first announcement of it, have I eagerly anticipated the release of this game, but I slowly lost hope of its avail when the Disk drive didn't come to America.
I think some concepts planned for SM642 ended up in the DS port of SM64, because I remember interviews with Miyamoto where he said he wanted multiple playable characters and such. Don't think we'll ever know though.
My biggest wait for a cancelled game was Robotech 64. Goddamn I wanted that game so bad. Even if it looked worse as time went on I would've been first in line for that game if it got released.
Would've liked to see Kirby Air Ride 64, too. GCN version was changed a lot and kinda sucked.
Darkstalkers vs Guilty Gear, if that ever went past concept anyways.
Would've liked to see how that Hellraiser NES game would've turned out. Wasn't it supposedly using this really advanced chip or something? All the stories I read about it were ridiculous.
The funny thing about 40 Winks was that it was cancelled after NP and Nintendo Official Magazine gave it a review. Not only that, but they used a blurb from a review ("Move over Mario") in the magazine ad for the game, which was advertised as Playstation-exclusive at the time. And not only that, but said ad got printed in NP. So NP had this ad for a Playstation game that claimed to be better than Mario from a Nintendo source. I don't think NP was too happy about that one...

Mega Man Anniversary Collection (GBA) - Not a huge loss considering it was just a compilation but I was sad when it got canned.

Armada 2 for Xbox and Dronez for the Dreamcast.
Dronez was one of the contributing factors to my wanting a Dreamcast. Both were originally slated for Dreamcast releases. Dronez actually made it to the Xbox, but only in Japan. And PC owners who bought a Geforce 3 gfx card, back in the day, also got a copy of Dronez, but I don't even remember seeing the PC version ever hitting store shelves.
Armada is one of my favorite Dreamcast titles. When they announced that Armada 2 was coming to the Xbox with online play, I immediately pre-ordered it. About a year and a half later, they announce it's cancellation. Needless to say, I was very upset, but I kinda expected it, because the original game wasn't exactly a hit..

Earthbound 64 and Robotech: Crystal Dreams.
The former I was following so passionately back in the day, re-reading every article and scouring every screen shot, every bit of beta material fascinating me.. It's eventual canning made me so sad, as I was such a fan of the original EB and Mother 3 didn't come out until way long after.
The latter I knew nothing about as I hadn't seen Robotech, so I only knew it even existed as a small "Coming soon" ad somewhere in an NP that didn't give much more information than a screenshot revealing it to be a mecha game. Then years later I got into Robotech, and figured out what it was. Then I discovered that interesting website hosted by one of the guys that worked on it, which revealed how ambitious of a project it was, and it really impressed me in hindsight.
One game I missed back then, one game I missed much later.

Most of the ones I'd have said have already been stated (but I'll reiterate D2, Hellraiser, Earthbound 64, RE 1.5 and Castlevania for the Dreamcast).
Also... Resident Evil 3.5. No, not the one that became Devil May Cry. I mean the one that looks like Silent Hill or Eternal Darkness.
And, to go way back, the port of Temple of Apshai that would have been the first real time RPG (similar to Diablo).

I'd like to mention Taro's Quest for NES. It was a turn-based episodic RPG made by Jaleco akin to Phantasy Star 3. There's a dump of a prototype floating around, and it's got some of the best production values for an NES RPG.

Although your own classification could vary, It'd be easy enough to consider one of the "BS Zelda" games to be considered such. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellaview_games_from_The_Legend_of_Zelda_series)

It's a neat premise. Game play wise it's very similar to genesis wolf team games like el viento, valis, and valis 3. If I'm not mistaken it was canceled (along with quest for the throne a.k.a. neugier) because sega bought out the publisher, Renovation. That's what I've heard anyway.

That add-on is so full of mystery, promises, announced titles, features, concepts and who knows what was never mentioned outside of Nintendo, it's second parties and any of the third parties who had their mits in the N64DD cookie jar.
The N64DD is one of the biggest mysterious failures in video games and I can't wait for the N64 scene to pick up so we can finally see what this add-on was all about. :D
*writes something about forgetting previous systems, but remembers something else*
While most of the good stuff has been found for the NES, SNES and Genesis, the 32X is another system with an astonishing lack of dug up protos and unreleased games, despite all the massive development cancellations. Shenmue for Saturn, I read something about that there was some kind of contest in Japan where people won early copies of Shenmue for Saturn, maybe five or six copies total? Then SEGA tried to get them back after the game was moved to Dreamcast, but were unsuccessful. I wonder if they still exist at all?
Toejam and Earl 3, that would've been neat on Dreamcast. I also really want to see that TJ&E 2 prototype that was mostly finished and similar to the first game. I heard DreamTR had it and some kind of forum was trying to raise funds to dump it, but then the proto got sold or something.
