Aside from the full guide earthbound came with, did it have a traditional manual?

Nope. Didn't need one. The guide was more than good enough :)

I have looked auction after auction and it appears that CIB means game, guide and oversized box.

The only one I have seen before with a traditional sized manual is the Japanese version...

It must have been an odd thing for it to come with a player's guide instead of a manual. Now I am starting to see why the game demands so much money nowadays...

Don't forget, it's only complete if the back page of the manual has the scratch and sniff cards ;)

He's right. It's similar to the spine cards on Japanese releases. Without it, 99% of it's perceived valued is diminished.

add to that a bonus if the cards are unscratched

Those cards don't lie either, they really do stink. Quite impressive that the smell has been contained and not leaked into the rest of the book. Then again I'm no expert on the secrets behind the scratch and sniff cards ;)
