View Full Version : Yeah, The Xbox 360 And PS3 Are Getting A Dreamcast Compilation

Wow this is some big news. Dreamcast compilation hitting PS3 and Xbox 360.

Sega has confirmed that, yes, early next year there'll be a collection of Dreamcast games compiled in a single retail package and released for the Xbox 360 and PS3. A retail listing appeared in November blowing the lid on such a pack, but Sega's Alan Pritchard has since told Game Informer "We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon. We are looking to bring some of the old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged." While there's speculation this simply means that the recent Xbox Live Arcade and PSN re-releases of Dreamcast games like Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure will be put in one box, Pritchard says "The titles are still to be announced". Those crazy kids praying for a Power Stone or Jet Set re-release, pray on!

I hope the PS3 version has more games than the Xbox 360 version, because Blu Ray discs can hold alot more space than a DVD. I would imagine that they could squeeze about 6-8 DC games on one DVD, while a Blu Ray could theoritcally hold 4 times that or more.

I'm thinking it will consist of Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket, Daytona, Ecco and maybe a Virtua title.

Possibly Shenmue due to the whole Shenmue City thing.

Now where's our Sega Saturn collection?!

I hope it's more then just a retail disc release of the PSN and XBLA games (Sonic Adventure, Sega Bass Fishing, Space Channel 5 Part 2, and Crazy Taxi).

If there were at least 6 or 7 games on here, it would be a great collection.

I kinda hope this has something like Alienfront Online on there, with full online and voice chat funcionality. About time this happens though. here's hoping in advance for a volume 2.

I love the Saturn as much (or more) than the next guy, but I'm afraid this will remain a pipe dream for a long, long time. The state of Saturn emulation in general hasn't advanced nearly as much as it has for other consoles, and unless Sega's been putting out shitty Sonic games for years because they've devoted all their manpower to coding up some good Saturn emulators...

Let me put it this way...we got Super A'Can emulation before we got a really polished Saturn emulator.

I think you're on to something. $10 says it's just like this...

I actually wouldn't mind that. Sure, it was a XBLA compilation of their classic and classic remakes on XBLA. But there were also a ton of games included that apparantly were considered too weak for standalone releases on XBLA, like Sky Kid.

If this includes their XBLA Dreamcast ports and several Dreamcast releases like the already mentioned Alien Front Online that perhaps are viewed as unsuited for being released as a standalone $10 XBLA release, I think it would be perfect.

But I imagine it's going to be like those two Konami releases. Bundled XBLA content and nothing else. I still think it's worthwhile to get these remakes on physical disc rather then $10 a pop online, but I'm hoping it's something more substantial that will impress us like things like Sonic Mega Collection Plus, Sega Genesis Collection, and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection did. A handful of Dreamcast ports taken off XBLA/PSN isn't going to have quite the same impact or thrill that those compilations had.

I'm predicting 5 XBLA ports of Dreamcast titles (With 4 of those being the games already released on XBLA or known to be on their way) for a nice even 1000 achievement points, and nothing else.

Sega is still taking it under consideration (http://www.industrygamers.com/news/sega-saturn-digital-downloads-might-be-in-the-cards/).

I was interested about this Dreamcast collection when I first heard about it a few months ago, but now I'm not so sure since I still have no idea what games will be included.

I will buy because I am retarded like that, but for people like me that got SA and CT, it would be very nice to get other games on the disc. That would feel like a total rip-off since I am going to be buying all the games on xbla, and then to turn around and hit me with a cash-in is, just, wrong. Unfortunately, I am a fanboy enough to not care and buy it anyway (I own Golden Compass on 360, Golend Compass!)

They offered Saturn games for PC download in Japan like 6 or 7 years ago. They did it by tailor-making a version of the emulator for each game (they bought out the "Giri Giri Project" emulator as a base), and by not offering that many games.

Also, they could theoretically offer "Saturn" games by using PC ports. I count 22 Sega-published PC games that were also on Saturn.

Yep

That's how we got Sonic CD and Sonic R. They were on two Sega consoles that were supposedly too difficult with too little value to bother emulating, so Sega simply ported the source code from the PC versions to bring those out for Sonic Gems Collection.

I believe the same thing happened with the unlockable Panzer Dragoon release on the Xbox game.

I knew about this, but made the critical mistake of assuming that the poster anticipating a Saturn collection wanted games that weren't easily obtainable on other systems. I guess if people want Sonic R, Virtua Cop 1/2, Virtua Fighter 1/2, Daytona, or whatever other AM2 arcade games got released that way, they're free to buy it a third or fourth time. I often see those PC versions for less than $10 each, sometimes even less than $5 at flea markets or used game stores.

Just don't expect Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, Shining the Holy Ark, etc etc etc, I guess.

If the idea of an extremely atmospheric, detailed adventure game fused with a healthy dose of slice-of-life sounds appealing, then it'd be well worth your while to hunt down a Dreamcast, a copy of Shenmue, an Utopia boot CD, and a PAL copy of Shenmue II. I recommend hooking it up to a VGA monitor with the DC VGA box for the best experience.

Which is really why people want a Saturn collection! Of course I already own most Saturn game I want but still, a updated collection port would be very much welcomed!

Of course they could port the Saturn games that got ported to the PS2 into a single collection. And that would include NiGHTS and Dragon Force :D

Or just a port of SFIII... please Sega?! To the 3DS if not a console.

I'd buy this if it had Shemnue 1 and 2, that way I could see what all the fuss is about. You could get Shenmue 2 for Xbox, if you had an Xbox or 360 which comes with a video explaining the events in Shenmue 1 (and even S2 comes with all items you could potentially obtain in S1 anyway). As far as the fuss is concerned, it's the earliest incarnation of sandbox games. It's linear (Shenmue 1 anyway) but there is a lot you can do in the environments and at the time it wasn't comparable to anything else on the market. Now it's a bit dated being usurped in some ways by Yakuza but there is a certain charm to it all the same.

As for 360/PS3 Dreamcast ports, great. CT will still be inadequate not having the original licences or rights to music, art, etc.. and otherwise it's probably going to be a pretty predictable line-up. That doesn't mean those without a Dreamcast won't be satisfied, I'm sure it will be a good set but as someone who owns 4+ functional Dreamcasts... they'd need to offer some pretty special titles to get my interest.

That's a somewhat ironic statement as I don't think they're trying to get YOUR interest. I doubt very much that Sega's target market is people who still own a Dreamcast, let alone someone who owns four.

I doubt very much that Sega's target market is people who still own a Dreamcast, let alone someone who owns four.I don't think quantity matters, it's the fact they all work in some capacity (at least one is overclocked). I hear of enough people who have problems with their Dreamcast but I've yet to have such issues and plenty of time logged on my original system so even people who do own Dreamcasts could still be interested in this. As someone who quite enjoys the Dreamcast I am interested from the standpoint that quality is up to par and includes content that is not necessarily pedestrian - much like the example of someone mentioning AlienFront Online; I could add Outrigger to that too. Point is it'd be nice to see more uncommon yet still good games appear.

That is something i've been aying off and on for awhile, Prop Arena for XBLA. That would be excellent, as it is a very fun game, especially multiplayer, that just had really bad luck with it's timing.

Hey, they could throw on that finished-but-not-released xbox version of Rent-a-Hero as well. Maybe the unknown-status xbox illbleed port too (not that there is probably anything/much different with that).

If they put Daytona and Chu Chu on this collection, I will hand Sega my money. That is all.

Sega clearly doesn't want to pay to relicense the phrase Daytona USA from International Speedway Corporation. But I think the arcade rerelease of Daytona USA and the Crazy Taxi edits on recent rereleases explain how the Dreamcast game would be rereleased. It would be modified by changing the title to something like Sega Racing Classic, the soundtrack would be edited or swapped out, etc.

It doesn't seem any more unlikely or involved then the changes Crazy Taxi had to go through.

All I'd care for is Shenmue, Shenmue 2, Dynamite Cop, and Phantasy Star Online(with online.) Not having Dynamite Cop wouldn't be much of an issue, but if all the other three are on there it'd be a day one purchase. Even if any of the three are on there it'd be a possible day one purchase.

It most certainly wouldn't be any of those already on XBLA. If they release a Sega Dreamcast collection, I'd say it's safe to say that it's going to be 1st party Dreamcast titles that they own. They're not going to pay other companies to include their games.

I just bought Sonic Adventure on PSN because it was on sale for $5. If you ask me it's worse than Sonic the Hedgehog PS360. Those of you who said it's a good 3D Sonic have no taste in video games.

The only game I'd be interested in is Crazy Taxi but that's just one game and it's not the same with different music.

Sadly, Sega appears to be learning from Nintendo. Why give consumers 20-30 games with a number of really good ones for $30 when you can give them four good ones for the same price? I'm not buying this, mostly because I own all of these games already. It will be interesting to see how quickly this goes to clearance.

Leo_A
01-14-2011, 07:17 PM
Wasn't hard to see this one coming.

Still, I'm interested in checking these out and really didn't want to pay $10 to buy each of these as a download. So it's not a complete loss, especially if it's only $30 so you can save a few dollars and actually be able to own them.

I wish Rare would release an XBLA compilation like this. I'd like to buy Perfect Dark and the two Banjo games, but I really hate to pay $15 a download.

Wait a minute. This is pretty unclear.

Unfortunately, the collection is merely a disc featuring the four games already available from the Xbox Live Arcade, so if you've been happily playing Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi, and you're looking forward to Space Channel 5 Part 2 and SEGA Bass Fishing on XBLA, then the Dreamcast Collection will come as a major letdown.

So which is it? If the collection features four games already available on XBLA, that would mean it does not include SC5 Part 2 and Sega Bass Fishing, which are not yet available. So does it include the four games named, or does it include Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, and two games not mentioned in the article (that are already available)? By my count, there are four first-party Dreamcast games available now on XBLA; Rez and Virtual On: OT are already on there.

We saw it coming a mile away but it's still an epic fail on Sega's part. I wish they would have thrown something extra in there like atleast 5-15 other DC games that aren't on XBLA already. If I pick this up it will be once it goes on clearance to $10 or less, so in a few months after release probably.

Leo_A

From my time with the demo of Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure, it sure seems like these are ports.

I doubt it's anywhere near feasible porting 15 decade old releases for one budget compilation. I imagine the profit margin isn't terribly huge at $10 a download for a single game since these are fairly complex games with a lot of code involved.

Too bad they didn't/couldn't emulate the Dreamcast for this compilation. Then some of these grandiose expectations might've been possible.

Still, I really thought we'd see them introduce at least one new XBLA/PSN release via this disc to make for an even 1000 achievement points. I really thought we'd get Space Channel Part 1 to go along with the sequel.

Oh yay Sega, a "New" Dreamcast compilation of the most quintessential SEGA titles, Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi, both of which have been released on at least 4 different consoles in the past 5 years. Let's see, PC, PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, let's get real here. Plus two other games that aren't really worth a damn. SEGA Bass Fishing? Sheesh.

Can't say I didn't already see this coming.

And Power Stone is a Capcom game, why are people getting their hopes up for that of all games to be re-released as if it were a First-Party game? Well, at least it's on PSP I guess.
