What were the best 2D games on the original Playstation?

Games like Rayman and the first Oddworld game. Stuff like that?

I like:

Castlevania: Chronicles
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
Silhouette Mirage

There weren't too many, sadly.

Edit:

I've read that Disney's Hercules and Tarzan games are descent, but I've never had the chance to play them. Double Dragon was re-released on Playstation, I believe, but only in Japan. You may want to check that out. Earthworm Jim 2 was released in Europe on Playstation. I'm not sure on the quality of the port, though.

Don't forget Punky Skunk!

:-D J/K

Seriously though, I thought Skull Monkeys was good, too bad I only got to play it on a demo disc.

Skullmonkeys is pretty good. A bit generic in play, but the cutscenes make up for it.

Klonoa and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night are arguably the best 2-D platformers on the PlayStation, though. Castlevania: Chronicles is okay, but it's just as chunky in control as the old NES games. While Silhouette has some good ideas and a great sense of humor, playing it is far more frustrating than it should be. It's the rare case in which Working Designs actually made a game worse than its Japanese original.

The Adventures of Sir Lomax is another decent platformer, and if you can handle imports, try out Umiharakawase Shun and Gunners Heaven.

Edit: I forgot Strider 2 and Metal Slug X (http://www.kidfenris.com/metalsx.html).

Man, how could I forget about Monkey Magic, another one of my favorites, as well as Strider 2.

Pinobee just came out a few months ago. I've read mixed reviews. Tom and Jerry in House Trap got some okay reviews. I wasn't a big fan, though. It's a little bit like Spy vs. Spy.

Tomba! and Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Returns are pretty good. You should check those out.

CV Nut Rant alert...

I'd have to say that's a No. Chronicles does have the multi-way (not eight-way but close) whip, and the ability to move back and forth in midair a little, though just a little. I like that style better than SotN, aka "Bouncing off the Walls with Glee CV."

Anyways, good choices overall. I'll have to take a look at these two Disney games; hopefully they'll amount to something :)

I posted a similar topic just last week. Anyway, add Strider 2 and Strikers 1945 to that list.

I think there were a few side scrolling shooters that rocked, like Einhander (ok, 2.5D, but come on).......was there an r type?

Somebody fill me in...I'd like to know what good shmups came out for PS also...domestic and foreign...

I really like the Oddworld games on the PS. They're the only platform games I've really enjoyed, too, although there are plenty of platformers I've yet to try.

Hell yeah. "R-Types" has R-Type and R-Type II. Then there was "R-Type Delta", as well.

Dire 51 is compiling 2D games on 3D systems. Just copying his initial Playstation list and removing non-shmups left behind:

Gradius Deluxe Pack
Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus
Gradius Gaiden
Sexy Parodius
The Raiden Project
Philosoma
Darius Gaiden
G Darius
Einhander
Raystorm
Raycrisis: Series Termination
ThunderForce V Perfect System
R- Types
R-Type Delta
Strikers 1945
Strikers 1945 II
Space Shot, aka The Shooting
Gekioh: Shooting King, aka Gekioh Sheinryu
Gunbird
In The Hunt
Xevious 3D/G+

Keep in mind that some of those are imports. Soukyugurentai (another import) is getting an Arcade Hits re-release, too. Woo!
