I'm looking at getting an old NES, but I'm wondering which games should I concentrate on. There were so many freaking games released for this system. I'm not a collector, this isn't about collecting. It's about playing these old games. I'm interested in which games capture the flavor of the Nintendo Entertainment System the best. These are some of the games that I would want to get:

the frst Contra
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 3
the first Zelda
Bases Loaded - played the crap out of this game back in the day
Double Drible - played the crap out of this game back in the day
Tecmo Bowl - played the crap out of this game back in the day

Back when I had a NES, I really only played sports games with other people. I wasn't into any of the adventure games or anything. But now, I love everything. So what games should I concentrate on getting? Remember, forget the whole collecting aspect. That means nothing to me. I don't care if I just get the Cart by itself, and it has tons of felt tip writing all over it.

I'd recommend some of the more popular games like the Double Dragon and Mega Man series. Also Kirby's Adventure is a great game.

I second Kirby's Adventure (LOVED that game, still do!), but Kickle Cubicle and the Adventures of LoLo should be on your list to get too. The LoLos are a little bit more uncommon than other games, and they're fun as hell.

Megaman 1-3
Super Dodgeball
Gauntlet 1+2
Urban Champion
N.A.R.C

They are all good games off the top of my head.

What's this "First Contra" drivel? Super Contra is the superior game by far.
(Just kidding about the drivel part. Hezeucrist and me agree, though, so you're outvoted).

And that's not just my slant (I actually like Probotector and Probotector 2, though not the Probotector version of Contra 3, got it?) playing in. It's really a better game.

I'd also say that the Ultima game Klimatron mentioned should be a safe bet. It's Ultima 4 (right?) - basically, the best ultima out there.
