Dear Goodwill,
Please stop putting oodles of stickers on game labels. Thanks.
---
Sooo, I suppose I just wanted to share my joy at what I got today. Nothing spectacular, but better than usual.
Feel free to post your first lucky finds this year! :)
-SNES-
Super Mario All Stars - $6
Contra III: Alien Wars, Killer Instinct, Punch Out, Shadowrun, MK3, Bart's Nightmare, DK Country - $3 each
and then 15 NES carts I didn't have for $0.50 each, most notably of which was River City Ransom (minty).
But THEN I went to a store similar to Play 'n Trade. I was with my sister and her two kids, who were both freaking out at all the stuffed Mario plushies. "Look, uncle David! BEE MARIO!", etc.. They were asking their mom for basically everything in the store, but in a cute way. Some dude walks over, explains that they wouldn't give store credit for the systems he brought in, and asked if we wanted them.
We walked away with a free N64 w/ booster pak, a free Genesis II, and a Playstation 1. Thanks for being cute, kids!

I would happily take stickers on items over what all of the Goodwills and thrifts use here, permanent marker. Cool story though. :) I need to get off my duff and see if the Flea Markets are open today.

That's a pretty decent you scored, IMO. Especially the $3 SNES titles, and 50¢ NES carts. The whole free consoles thing is pretty surreal. Stuff like that just doesn't happen to me.
I just realized it's Saturday. I'll probably hit the swap meet today and see what's out there, but expectations are low.

My first score of the year was 1,540,000 in Contra. (NES) Played without the 30 man code, finished it twice on one credit. Got to stage 2 on loop 3, got tired of playing it and turned it off. I'm sure I could have finished it a couple more times if I still had the vigor of my youth.

Sorry about stealing your thunder. If I had known you were going to make a thread, I wouldn't have done it. Still friends? :)
Anyways, good score. I bought Super Mario Bros. The Movie as soon as it came out. I know it's not the best film, but it's one of my guilty pleasures.

I actually picked out two other movies, The Lost Boys 1 Special Edition and Howard The Duck, but I lost track of Lost Boys and Howard had a loose disk inside. :(

i got the coolest find i have ever gotten.
I don't know how much its worth (could be worth what i paid.. i don't know lol)
but whatever i am super happy about it
its not a movie or cd or a game
what is it?
well i have 5 main hobbies.
Cars
Games
Movies
Music
and Antiques (cause i love history....despite almost failing it in high school lol)
and i wanted to see what kinda antiques i could come across (haven't been antiquing in almost a year)
Well had nothing to do today and so me and a family member went to a local antique mall... sadly they weren't open for new years.
The family member mentioned in a few towns over of a antique flea market kinda deal (same idea just different name) thats inside this buildings basement. and i knew about it but i never once walked in. So i was like fine... lets go.
We go inside checked out and saw they had some really cool things. (found a early 1900's bug sprayer for 6 bucks with bold letters "KILLS INSECTS!" i thought it was cool but didn't pounce on it and i found a "House Call Kit" for 25. thought it was a old doctors bag but in the form of a box. but no it was something just as neat though. It was a kit a priest would lug around to bring to a home of someone needing a last prayer or something read to them. would contain a cross and candles and other assorted items. made out silver and had candles to go with it! pretty cool but i am not really into religious antiques) so what did i get?
for 30 dollars i bought this
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/car_show_fan/carshows2/VoltampCure1.jpg
now i know i know your asking yourself now "you paid 30 dollars for worn out old normal looking wooden box"
but wait theres more to this box
http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd158/car_show_fan/carshows2/VoltampCure2.jpg
this was inside...
still confused?
well let me explain.
This is a medical device that was used as what is known today as a "Cure All Device". That would cure anything from back pains to pimples to hair loss. Hell for all they knew it could cure cancer as we speak. (if they even thought about cancer in the time frame this was made)
You'd either crank it via a crank that you'd insert the device or power it by very large battery (which sadly this machines missing but that gives me something to hunt down!). It would generate electricity
you'd plug in a cord or multiple cords (depends on what ales you which the book you see explains what you'd do to cure what you had). into 1 of the 3 holes and you'd plug it into the paddles on the other end of the cord and depending on your problem you'd either use the cylinders or you'd use the sponges (i am missing one sadly but more to hunt for!) (you'd also dip the sponges in water first) flip the switch and apply the paddles to where ever the manual called to cure your problem and it would shock you depending on what setting you'd put it on.... and Vola you were cured
of course this actually didn't cure anything but it gave a shocking satisfaction (pun intended! lol)
these were called later on by doctors as "Quack Medical Devices" quack meaning made by wannabe doctors that really didn't know what they had on their hands and just put a stamp of approval saying it will do as its said to do.
This particular model was made in the late 1920's by a company called "Voltamp"
It might not be worth a whole hell of alot of money. hell for all i know i might have over paid for it
but its got one hell of a story behind it that makes a great topic starter at parties :D
history is fun!

Can it still generate electricity even without the battery?
Quack medical devices are fun. I wonder if there are any of those radium quack devices out there still. One was like a dispenser where you put water in it and it supposedly irradiated the water, and gave you many health benefits. Actually, it barely had any radium in it at all, you were more likely to get sick from the lead and mercury in the metal. Pretty much anything you could buy, you could have radium put in it.
Of course, they were dangerous. One time irradiated water was sold, a man drank so much that his jaw fell off. That put an end to most electric/radiation quackery, with one notable exception.
X-Ray shoe fitting stands which were used for a very short period in the 40's and 50's until they realized they were putting out ten times what is the yearly allowed amount of radiation exposure in one use.
Anyway, lucky.

You present a picture of irradiation that is commonly believed, but entirely false. Irradiation of food or water does not cause the food or water to become radioactive. The danger from those water jugs was almost entirely from the arsenic and lead that the uranium ore they used would leeched into the water as you noted. That's very different from irradiation, which could be a very useful and safe method for making our food supply safer. Too bad it has a name that makes people panicky and lose all sense of reason.
We used to have the Museum of Questionable Medical Devices here in Minneapolis. It was free and very very cool. All kinds of crazy stuff including one of those x-ray foot/shoe sizing machines. Fortunately it was all donated to the Science Museum when they closed so some of it can still be viewed.
And yeah, those radioactive jugs and dishes and stuff are still out there and sell for quite a bit of money as antiques/collectibles.

Either way, it just wasn't good for you. Plus, the jugs promised to restore "the lost element of original freshness—radioactivity." Apparently came from the belief that spring water had radon gas in it. Like you said, it poisoned people, but not with radon.
Radithor, however, did. That's what cause a guy's jaw to fall off.
I saw that museum on Modern Marvels. Looked really cool. Also liked the light exposure quackery, said that sitting in certain lights could cure disease.
Now I want a piece of quackery.

Yeah, that looks legitimate, but old light therapy promised to cure things like pancreatic cancer. Also, you had to do it in the complete dark, during certain moon phases, naked.

what the ironic thing is
i always wanted a quack medical device for like over 10 years (i love odd and weird and bizarre historical items!)
I watched the recent episode of the show "Oddities" on Discovery channel this past thursday night and saw they had a Electro Shock therapy machine come in and such. and i was like that is soooooooo friggin cool i want one.
Well.. one event led to another and sure enough at a antique mall like place 30 miles from my own home there was such a device up for sale within my price range. like it was ment to be :D
i love the cure all devices.
i mean i love the fact some popular sodas we all drink now a days once were thought to be a cure all themselves.
I would love to get my hands on some other devices or bottles of concoctions.
Radithol would be awesome.
or a container that had the famous "Tape Worm Cure" that was used in the late 1800s.
other odd items i would be interested in would be
a Blood Letting kit (would have multiple blades that would pop out in a very fast method cutting you precisely. The idea was that letting blood would also cure things.
The hardest to find item i would love to have is a non medical item and is actually religious (the only religious item i really want at that)
a Vampire Killing Kit (and yes they really did make such a thing)
would be medium sized case contain usually a copy of the holy bible, a cross, a vial of holy water, i think sometimes garlic, and a stake (and some of them contained a small single shot pistol). They were made in the late 1800's very cool and very hard to find item as they weren't really manufactured a more of a made by the local church or something like that kinda item

So I came across something pretty neat today. My fiancee and I went to a flea market and didn't expect much. So the old 60+ couple that were selling N64's and SNES's (They had about 15 of each, all in very good condition) and video games kind of blew my mind. I picked up some 5200 games, and saw a game that was too wide to be a 2600 cart, but too skinny to be a 5200 cart. We just got home, and apparently it goes to a system I've never heard of - The APF-M1000. I would say it's in "average" condition. The game is called "Casino 1: Roulette/Keno/Slots."

The only good modern vampire is a Konami vampire.
My friend had the opportunity to buy a "really old Compaq." I'm not sure if it's much of a "find" or not, but we split the cost of $80 for the PC and a big bag of software and manuals.
It's a Compaq Portable, released in '82 to compete with the IBM PC. This particular unit has two floppy drives (5.25"), but they're different from what I've seen included with this model. Two fit in one bay, and the other bay has a plastic insert. Aside from that, it looks pretty standard. There's three ISA boards inside, being the floppy controller, the video board, and an unidentified board (RAM?) that has no ports but tons of ICs. Everything seemed to work except the keyboard, but we figured out why after a few hours. The keys have metal-painted foam pads underneath that bridge the contacts on the PCB. Once we disassembled the keyboard, we could just use our fingers to bridge the contacts like it was a very ghetto touch-sensitive keyboard. I brought over my copy of Mega Man III PC to test, and it does indeed run... I haven't been able to test if my old Apple joystick works on it or not, we never plugged it back in after we had the keyboard issues.

The included software isn't much to speak of, probably nothing of real value (Lotus Symphony?). It does include the manual for the PC and the BASIC guide, but it's missing the DOS reference. The manual has a DOS 1.02 disk inside, but we preferred the copied DOS 2.12 disks we found in the cases.

We're probably going to sell it, but it does need a bit more testing. I want to see the composite output next time I stop by his place.

I would consider that a damn fine find. Old computers like that are hard to find let alone working with a bundle of software to go with. I am jealous.

Weighs like 40 pounds, too.
I have one, I think it has bad RAM or something. Plus, with the lack of available games on 5.25 inch floppies around here, it sadly doesn't get enough use. Can't run games from the later 80's either.
I got it for free a while ago, though.

I had a a pretty good start to the new year finds today! First I went to my local comic shop to pick up the December issues of Sonic the Hedgehog & Sonic Universe. While I was there, I noticed the shop owner had a couple of Sonic Wacky Wobbler bobble-heads. So I bought one for $20.
Next, I browsed through a nearby pawn shop and found:
Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince (Single Disc Version)
Final Fantasy VII (CIB, Greatest Hits Version)
The HP DVD was 4.00, but FF7 didn't have a price tag. I asked how much they wanted for the game, and the clerk said "How about ten bucks for both items?" Well at that price, how could I say no? I'm planning to sell or trade the FF7 since I already have a copy.

Found this treasure on my last Goodwill run for $1.99. It's the registered version of Doom 1 on 4 floppy disks. This is the original version, not the later version published by GT Interactive or whoever it was. I believe this was self-published by id. I know this is pretty rare, but I can't really find another like it on ebay at the moment. Anyone have an idea what it goes for? It's in really great condition and appears to be complete.
I'm not much on collecting fullsets of anything, but my Doom collection is probably the largest I have for any single game, so I'll likely be keeping this as a prized part of my collection.

It's been a pretty good day today.
My boyfriend and I took a day trip into Detroit and purchased a few goodies
(I'll post pics tomorrow)
Complete copy of Mega Man 3 NES - $29.99
Brigandine PSX - $69.99 (my boyfriends desire for SRPG, mine for the collection)
Fatherland Laserdisc - 2.99 (this makes me beyond happy, not just because it's worth around $100, but because it's an amazing film.)
Tremors Laserdisc - 2.99
Buckaroo Bonsai Laserdisc - 2.99
Aladdin Special Edition Laserdisc - 5.99
Interview with the Vampire Laserdisc - 2.99
Star Trek VI Laserdisc - 2.99
Star Trek First Contact Laserdisc - 2.99
The Princess Bride Laserdisc - 2.99
Other than that since it's been ages since I've posted I spent an entire summer and the last few months pretty much running around Canada and the US and picking up various games for good prices (like finding Final Fantasy V boxed SFC for $10 randomly). I'm slowly pulling my boyfriend into video game collecting, which is either nice or really dangerous.

tl;dr at the bottom as usual.
So I went to resale shops for the past two days and came back with nearly nothing. A few of them had stuff, but nothing I wanted. The thing I actually got was a little interesting.
I walked into the resale shop and eventually saw this where they place their games:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y254/DrDib/IMG_0149.jpg
I walked to the back of the store to research the thing and make sure it actually worked and wouldn't break my Saturn. It seemed like it was decent so I figured I'd buy it and pick up some Saturn imports at a game store to try it out. I then realized I should look what was inside the box before purchasing it and I saw this:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y254/DrDib/IMG_0152.jpg
I was a little disappointed, I already have a 3rd party memory card, but I knew how sought after the official memory cards are so I purchased it.
tl;dr
SEGA Saturn Official Memory card - $2
No I don't want to trade it for a SEGA Satellite.

Right, so. Story time.
Yesterday... I found a ton of albums I wanted. I had like fourteen albums all lined up, with tons of music from back when I was in highschool. I was going to get them all... until I inspected the discs. They were so scratched it almost made me cry. :( I ended up grabbing these two:
http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j238/foxhack/DP/dp-2011-01-04.jpg
KRBE Collector Disc #2: New Music Zone Edition (http://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/various_artists_f2/krbe_collector_disc__2__new_music_zone_edition/) (1993, not for resale promotional V/A compilation)
MTV Amp (http://rateyourmusic.com/release/comp/various_artists_f2/mtv_amp/) (1998 V/A compilation)
(Links go to their respective RYM pages with tracklists.)
They're pretty good. Amp has quite a bit of one-hit wonders from my highschool years.
Today's finds:

Robocop 2 OST: $2
Inspector Gadget score (promotional): $1
Adam Ant: Antics in the Forbidden Zone: $1
Diablo: $1
Point Blank 3, Wipeout 3, Star Wars Ep. 1 Jedi Power Battles: $2 EACH O_o
YES, TWO BUCKS EACH. There was this one booth setting up and they just tossed a bucket with a ton of games and pads inside. Most games were sports games (racing, golf or football) but I noticed Wipeout 3 first. I picked it up and was amazed at the price, so I bought it. A bit later I picked up Jedi Power Battles. The seller told me they were bringing out more stuff, so I waited. Point Blank 3 was in that lot so I grabbed it right away. ALL GAMES ARE MINT. Woo.

On the way out, I saw that guy who sold me Scurge: Hive and KOF 98 Ultimate Match a few months ago. He had a few more games, and I picked up both of these for $10. I remember Back to Stone being kinda hyped for some reason... I forget why. But it stood out in my mind enough to purchase it. The box is kinda dinged up but it's still new.

Yesterday... I found a ton of albums I wanted. I had like fourteen albums all lined up, with tons of music from back when I was in highschool. I was going to get them all... until I inspected the discs. They were so scratched it almost made me cry. :(
Ugh, I know what you mean. This happens to me all the time at this one thrift store that's by a local college with a nationally known radio station. I always see rare demo/promo CDs from 1988-2010 there, and more often than not, they're totally beat to shit and unplayable in the end. Sometimes I'll buy them just to see if they work, and if they fail, I still have the CD book/artwork/whatever.

I don't have a CD player. All I have is my DVD drive and I'd rather rip them to my computer instead... CD players are usually a lot more tolerant of scratches, but not my PC drives. So I just leave 'em behind. I don't usually buy promo CDs anymore either, unless the album is particularly rare and I can't find another copy anywhere.
And then there's the whole CD rot thing that I'm having to deal with more and more every day. Bloody hell. I almost bought the soundtrack CD for The Terminator two weeks ago, but... :\

I bought this factory sealed in the hopes of selling my opened copy, only to find out that this is a sealed demo version. I'm not sure if this demo contains the full game(and I'm not willing to open it up to find out) but on the other side of the case you can see an instruction sheet with controller directions and theres no back case art.
So now I know that some 3DO Japanese games were released in demo form(factory sealed) with the same front case/manual artwork as the full game versions. The only way to tell the difference is by looking for the spine card--only the full versions have those.

NES - River City Ransom (cart) - 6
I already got rampage but this was in beautiful like new condition to replace my battered one. Hard to find those paper case games that haven't been abused. RCR even though common, I NEVER see around here, and never for under 10, so I picked that up without a problem.

That's pretty interesting. If I didn't just drop mad cash (for me anyway) on a pair of 2006 TRON Adidas sneakers, I might have to make an offer.
I have my copy buried (on the shelf) so I can't check but doesn't the full release simply have a Sailormoon S logo on the back of the instruction booklet? I've seen a pretty convincing pressed bootleg of Sailormoon on the 3DO that looked damn good except for incorrect disc art and a single color inside booklet. ...I should have bought it. Sailormoon games are like my subset collection for gaming. LOL

I've kind of gone on a binge, I hadn't bought any games for a little while but with a trade I made with Kroogah, I wanted a new DS, which made me look at the DS library, which made me buy more and more...
From Kroogah,
Korg DS-10 Plus (DS)
White Knight Chronicles (PS3)
From Wife,
DSI XL (Plus she got $20 promotional credit from buying it which led to...)
From Amazon, all DS
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (Free with the credit :D)
Apollo Justice
Sonic Chronicles
Theresia
I hadn't checked my Reward Zone points at Best Buy for some time, and it turned out I had $55 worth, so I took advantage of some games on sale.
Professor Layton 3 (DS)
Picross 3D (DS)
Pokemon HeartGold (DS)
Final Fantasy: Advent Children Complete (Blu-Ray)
After tax, I owed $1.
And hopefully I can say that Pier Solar came in the next few days too!

Okay lot sale finds:
On Tuesday I found a PS2 (30001 model) with a network adapter attached. That was $5. I haven't tested it but I got home and powered it up (to see if anything was in the CD drive). It powers up fine and is in good shape (the seal isn't broken either). It looks promising. I took off the network adapter and put it with my others. It's time to sell another grouping of 4 on eBay.
There were a few interesting things today. I got a bare Game Gear, with both battery covers (!). I'm going to test it out but if it doesn't work the covers will be available as replacements. That was $3.
Also, digging in a box of VHSes and audio cassettes I found a copy of MacArthur's War: Battles for Korea (http://www.mobygames.com/game/macarthurs-war-battles-for-korea). The cover art on this game is great. It's the 5.25" IBM/Tandy version. It looks like a really cool game, and I'll have to try it out. It was a mere $0.50.

All PS1 and complete
Family Card Games (up for trade)

Then, I happened to find a factory sealed VHS tape of three episodes of the British comedy Keeping Up Appearances. I sent it to my mom.

Yeah, we still get Brit coms on PBS on Saturday nights - Are You Being Served, Keeping Up Appearances, My Family and As Time Goes By. It doesn't come on where my folks live, so I figured it would do her a lot more good than it would do me.

That is wild, I was at a goodwill recently and they had a copy of it also for $1.99, I passed.
May as well post what I did find though as I don't do much thrifting anymore.
Found a complete copy of the first L4D game for 7.99 which I snagged just because it was there, seems to work fine but I allready own it. Just thought it was weird to actually find a 360 game at goodwill?
Also found complete copies of FF 8 and Parasite Eve, both black label for $4 at a pawn shop the same day.
Copy of MK 2 for the game gear loose for $1.50.
And that will prob be it for another year.

Finally, it finally came. One day before one month since ordering, my copy of The History of Nintendo Volume 1 arrived from Pix'n Love Publishing...
http://www.classicplastic.net/digitalpress/finds/DP-Finds-2011-01-07%2801%29.jpg
This book is AWESOME. It's a visual encyclopedia of every product and venture Nintendo ever created from their inception up until 1980. It's been out in French for awhile and in English for a few months. More English versions of some of their other books are on the way, including the next book in this series which chronicles all the Game & Watch games in depth. Their book on Takahashi Meijin is also pending English release... and hopefully one day the book on Gunpei Yokoi.
In addition to the story of Nintendo and detailed pictures of all their products, it also contains detailed descriptions of everything. It even contains snaps of the TV advertisements for many items.

LOL I won't argue with you there but not about her Codename is Sailor V / Sailormoon days. More so about how she became so bitter about how nothing else she ever created could match the popularity of Sailormoon, that she effectively quit licensing out the rights out of spite. Yeah, it has started to pick back up in Japan but that ship has sailed stateside. Have you seen how much official USA release (subtitled) Sailormoon DVD's go for and continue to appreciate at? Hell, I bought my Galaxian cocktail table with the $450.00 I got from selling my translated Sailormoon manga (the small book form, not the individual issues).
