I've been craving a Sega SG-1000 for nearly 5 years now. Money's tight in the family because I have college coming up and a trip to New York planned for mid January. So how can I get my hands on an SG-1000 around May-June, in Tennessee? What would the price be on one? I'm really jonesing bad...

Order one from Japan, pretty much. Don't know the cost but shipping is what'll kill ya.

What website can someone order an SG-1000 from Japan?

Check Japan Game Stock, otherwise eBay might turn up something if you haven't already checked.

From Yahoo Auctions Japan using a service like Celga. Or try Bock @ Smspower.org

If money is tight, an Sg-1000 is probably not a good idea. Actually, don't know if they're cheaper, but you're better off with a Japanese SMS, it plays SG-1000 games.

I've seen two on Ebay in the past two months and both went for over $400

Money won't be tight in the spring, that's why the wait. Due to the high price I may have to wait longer. I'll be in college 2011 - mid 2010s, but then again I could work in the summer in college to get some money for an SG-1000 in 2012 (:

And I have an American SMS, I got one March 27, 2006 when I first started collecting. I just like the look, novelty value, and "awesomeness" of the SG-1000. I saw one on eBay in '08 at maybe $130, but it was in Taiwan dollars or something like that. This SG-1000 won't be gotten until money isn't tight or I get means to make my own money. I'm 18 so I may be able to get a summer job in a year or so.

I've sold them before. Definitely for much less than $400.

I'm planning to move back to Japan later this year, but it will be in summer/fall.

SG-1000 consoles are NOT common in Japan. They are not something you are likely to see, even on an import site or in a retro game shop in Japan. They turn up infrequently. Still, if I do get more (and I will eventually), I will put them up for sale.

PM me every few months to remind me. :)

I cannot guarantee anything, but at least I will have a chance assuming I end up back in Japan this year (I am counting on it!).

Look into getting a Telegames Dina 2-in-1. It's a clone put out by the Bit Corporation of the Colecovision and Sega SG-1000. It's video output is not all that great, though. But it will happily play SG-1000 games in the second cartridge slot.

Wasn't the SG-1000 released in Australia too, along with the SG-3000 (the computer version)? It might be easier and cheaper to find one down there.

Australia is PAL, isn't it? Going with a Japanese version would mean he'd probably still be able to power it correctly from a standard 110v power outlet and it would be displayed fine on NTSC televisions.

True, but if it saves him a couple hundred bucks, maybe it'll be worth it to him. Plus, the games hopefully would be translated.

An Aussie version would totally be worth it - the cheaper the better, as long as it's in good condition with many years of life left in it. There are ways around the PAL to make it play in America. And English translations are always a great thing.

And maybe a Dina would be a good idea (: Eventually, I want a true SG-1000, but a Dina could tide me over for a year.

I'd also keep checking Rakuten. Now that they have opened up to selling internationally there's some great deals to be had and the sellers do get in new stock from time to time so you never now if one will show up (I've already checked and didn't find one listed on there - plenty of games for one tho).

Most of the JP SG-1000 games barely have any text (and as far as I know, none of the SG-1000 games that would need translation came to AU). What little there is is often already in English. There are ways around the PAL, but a PAL system also means the games will play slower than they are intended (and from what I read, the AU games weren't optimized for 50 Hz).

SCORE! Got an SG-1000 II on November 4th, and as far as I can tell there is enough English on my Japanese console so the language isn't a problem.

Congrats!

Though your sig mentioning you have one makes your earlier posts in this thread seem kinda funny now. LOL

So, did you order any games with it? I've only got Exerion for my Dina, I've been wondering what would be good to try and import.

No games yet. I'll get some games in January. I do plan on showing my SG off when I get a 2008 Honda Accord to cart it around (I have no car yet) in October, in the North Nashville area.
