Does Sonic VC require the classic controller?

Hey there, quick question.

My family is doing Christmas a little late this year. We got my Mom a Wii, and she was recently mentioning some nostalgia for Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 which we used to play together when I was growing up. I was considering purchasing one of these from the virtual console for her as part of her gift, but she doesn't have a classic controller. As far as i can remember, the sonic games only require one button - it's jump if you're moving or standing, or spin if you're crouching (in sonic 2 and later). Will the VC version of the game require her to use a classic controller just because it's a genny game, or can she use her Wiimote?

You CAN use the classic controller, but no, most Genesis VC games don't require it. Sonic 1 and 2 will work fine with the Wiimote.

Furthermore, it'll tell you what controllers are required for any game when you look at them in the Wii Shop Channel.
