I have gotten hold of this mod chip and I would like some info on installation. Like which models of the DC will this work for? There are all kinds of different tutorials for different chips (many 4 wire ones). Does this one have a particular name? Thanks for any info!

That thing looks fried. That has to be the worst soldering job I think I've ever seen.

Just out of curiousity... Why would you need a modchip for a Dreamcast, when you can simply use a boot disc?

They play both games on CD-R, and retail imports. So a modchip is pretty pointless...

And yes, the Utopia boot disc works on every model I've ever tried it on. Just make sure you have the last version which I believe, was 1.3 - which works on the sports and later model Dreamcasts, as the earlier versions are hit and miss.

(And it's free, which is always a plus! You'll have to google search for it though - posting a link here would be a no-no..)

To my knowledge it was never used. I not too sure what the clear film is (seems like a glue or something) I know about the boot disks but I have two DC's and really just wanted to do it for the hell of it. I had a PS1 boot disc once and it gets annoying and to be honest I don't even own an import game... yet.

Well yeah. Many prople don't mind swapping or CD-Rs.

It's just a modchip is the most practical way to make all originals direct boot. Last I recall there's a region change disc, but as such a description implies that wouldn't be true permanent region free.

All Dreamcast copied games I have are self-boot.

Who uses the Utopia Boot Disc anymore ?????

The DC modchip is to make the DC region free.
People that play Original [ONLY] Domestic and Imports would want a DC modchip so they don't need to use a swap disc.
I have a region free DC for all my Original Games.
On this system I do not use any burned games.

It's not fried, the left over brown stuff you see is soldering flux. It's completely normal.
