At least, I *think* it was a Commodore 64 game, this was years ago and my memory is fuzzy.

Basically you were a person, possibly a detective, who was going around at some kind of party or gathering at what appeared to be a creepy castle. It was either 1800s type or early 1900s maybe, nothing modern or really old.

I know there was a crime of some kind to solve by talking to people and finding clues; it may have been a murder or simply a theft.

I started going through screenshots of C64 games but there are a LOT.

It's not set in a castle, but perhaps Murder on the Zinderneuf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_on_the_Zinderneuf)?

I remember the graphics being at least late NES quality, so better than that shot. It's entirely possible it was another computer but I'm reasonably sure it was the C64.

Two games somewhat spring to possible mind... The Detective Game (http://www.gamebase64.com/game.php?id=2140) and Murder on the Mississippi (http://www.gamebase64.com/game.php?id=5093).

You're a genius! The Detective Game is it. I remember the rain, and possibly there was lightning. I never got anywhere because I was pretty young when it was out but I remember it clearly.

And apparently someone made a DS Freeware version.
