Hi,

Wondering if anyone else have come across this. I have a GG that has all its caps replaced (motherboard, powerboard, soundboard) and the LED mod done. The funny thing is that when you first switch it on (powered by the ext adapter), it doesn't turn on, the red power light is off andthe screen remains dark. However, if you leave it alone with the switch on for a few minutes and try turning it on again, it comes to life and everything works.

I measured the voltage across the LEDs and notice that when you first turn it on, it is low e.g. 1V or so. Which explains why the LED doesn't power up. As time goes by, the voltage actually rises and eventually, it is sufficiently high to drive the LEDs.

Question, could this be due to the 'new' capacitors that I put in the GG? The capacitors I used are a mix of electrolytic, ceramic and tantalum, depending on what I can find. Should I have kept to just a particular type or are the symptoms due to damaged caps?

Sorry for the long story... any advice appreciated. Tx.

Maybe the power regulators need replacement as well.

I would probably pull the power board and check/reflow the caps that are on it. Probe the 9V input from the wall wart all the way to the voltage regulator and you should find your culprit. As mentioned above, it could also be a bad regulator but the timing of it all seems funny.

I did try swapping out the power regulator board with other known working ones but still get the same result. Still, all the regulator boards that I have are originals i.e. no new caps. Will try and recap them and see if it works. The 820uF cap on that board is pretty hard to find at the shops though.

Would you happen to know the voltage reads across the various pins on the regulator board?

Try another ac adapter before you go ahead and do that. The power supply might be the culprit. A model 2 genesis adapter will work for this. Does it do the same warm up when you use battery power?

sounds like some one did a crappy solder jonits on this one have bourght about 5 in the past few months and repalced al caps are fine the 68uf 16v cap i use is a mini one hard to get but found one thats the back light one.
i find i got a jap game gear once the light blue and no cap was leaking i wonder why it never had a replacement caps bt i did replace them anyway as i always do.
