View Full Version : What PSone games, best stand the test of time?

I just recently got a PSone, and I'm trying to figure out what games I should get to get that old "PSone flavor". I haven't had an old Playstation in a long, long time. I think back in late 1997, I got rid of both my Playstation and Nintendo 64, and I was concentrating on just playing PC games. I actually left the world of video games, for the PC world for a couple of years. When the Dreamcast came out, I returned to the console world.
Anyways, I'm looking for suggestions on old PSone games that stand the test of time. For example, I would say that Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is one of those games that does stand the test of time.
Also, I'm not as interested in the 3D games on the original Playstation. Alot of 3D games that came out on the PS1 were absolutely amazing when they first appeared, but now look like blocky, pixelly messes. Although I might make an exception for a classic game like the original "Tomb Raider".
Basically, if anybody has any suggestions on any PS1 games that hold up after all these years, then let them fly!
Thanks.

One game I find stands up well is Silent Hill.
For 3D games that still look impressive, and are fun to play, try Pac Man World.

Twisted Metal 2
Sure there are some graphical glitches in certain levels, like stuff dissapearing now and then, but the game always will rock. The effect of Napalm floating through the air and then crushing down on top of someone is FUCKING awesome. In TM3 and 4, Napalm moves really quick, and it was lame as hell.
Great music and sound effects too, and of couse level design is top notch.
This game will always be in my top 10 ever, maybe even top 5.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Tempest X3 (especially if you don't have a Jaguar and it's version)
Any of the Crash Bandicoot games are good but the 3rd one, Crash Bandicoot: Warped is the best of them (and the last of the regular series on the original PS as far as Crash as an adventure game).

I'm going out on a limb and suggesting that you'll probably have to look past the grapical limitations of early 3D to play the best of the PS1. Many, many of the classic games on the system are in 3D, you can't escape it. Thankfully, the gameplay holds up, and isn't that what classic gaming is about anyway? The Wipeout series (Wipeout, WipeoutXL, Wip3out) are 3D racers, but still look and play damn good, particularly Wip3out on a PS2 with smoothing turned on. Tenchu 1 and 2 hold up to any stealth games of this generation. PaRappa The Rapper and UmJammer Lammy will always be the O.G.'s of rhythm genre. Of course you've got the classic RPG's, but it sounds like that's not your bag.

I think that the first Colony Wars holds up pretty well, because the graphics were very atmospheric. I've never seen a blinding sun like in Colony Wars. Very cool. And I think that in general the 3-D games that went for a more atmospheric, perhaps "blurry" look have held up better than the ones that tried to go with sharply defined, high-poly (for the time) graphics. Codename: Tenka is an example of a FPS that looks low-res today, but not crappy. G-Police has some nice graphics, if you can stand dealing with the 50-(virtual)foot draw distance. More importantly, G-Police is a fun little blaster (what I'd call a vehicle shooter sim).
Of course, the arcade game emulations will hold up forever, or at least as long as the original arcade games. Most of the vertically scrolling shmups on the PS are ports or emulations of arcade games that you never saw because arcades are a dying breed. And there are plenty of shmups that I like on the ol' PS. R-Type Delta and Einhander are a couple of horizontal scrolling shmups that are originals for the PS that still play and look nice. For true suffering, check out R-Types. And Philosoma is another shmup that looks fairly nice, especially for an early PS game.

this one might just be me, but I've always gotten hundreds of hours of use out of Battle Arena Toshinden. Also, look up Soul Blade for great PSOne fighting.

The Spyro games still look great, but may seem like too much
of a little kid's game for some
Medievil is another one, was kinda difficult for me, never finished.

Just a side note from the peanut gallery (me!)
Personally I don't steer away from games just because they don't stand the test of time. I play games like Warhawk and the original Twisted Metal which look pretty horrible by today's standards but they're part of the very foundation upon which the PlayStation was built. I think I've just learned over time to embrace the flaws in early games (except if they were awful games even for their own time) because they immediately bring forth the sense of nostalgia that I look for when playing these older consoles.
And isn't that, at least in part, why we're retro-gamers to begin with?

I agree with petewhitley, the PS1 was supposed to be a 3D system. That's what Sony wanted. On with my list:
Tekken 3: I whole-heartedly agree. Solid fighter, lots of extras, thanks IGTD I have to go buy this game again. (Trying not to list what's already out there)
Blaster Master Blasts Again: this is probably me, but here's a 3D platformer that is difficult yet has old school nostalgia that keeps me playing. Not the best graphics but has a frustration level that keeps me playing.
Driver: No you can't change cars, but this game had it all with car chases before GTA 3. There's even the bonus (or penaly) where you DO have to obey the law. Still a blast to play.
Plus what others have posted.
Great, now I want to haul my PS1 out and play some of these again. Does anyone know of a controller that is more comfortable to use than the standard pads?

I'm a big fan of puzzle games. 2 of the best were on the PS1.
Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo and Tecmo Stackers. those 2 games will never get old. unfortunately they may be a bit tricky to a hold of.

I'd say the two Lunar games stand well. Great storytelling is never outdated.
I'd like to second Intelligent Qube, I've been so addicted to that game lately. :)

Rapid Reload- (Gunners heaven in the US) Great Gunstar Heroes inspired game...cool weapons and Bosses.
A good choice, but it was never released in the US, so you'll have to settle for an import from Japan or Europe.
Anyway, my suggestions:

Alundra
Ape Escape
Bushido Blade 1 and 2
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Chrono Cross (and Chrono Trigger)
Darkstalkers 3
Einhander
Ehrgeiz
Elemental Gearbolt
Final Fantasy titles (any of them, including Tactics)
Ghost in the Shell
Guilty Gear
Gunners Heaven (import)
Lunar 1 and 2
Mega Man Legends 1 and 2

Tobal No. 2 (import)
UmJammer Lammy
Valkyrie Profile

I'm sure that I forgot some, but that list should be more than enough for now.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo won my "game logging more total time in the PSX than any other game" competition. But many games already mentioned were runners up.
Also check out Builder's Block and Bust a Move 2, 3, or 4 for more fun puzzle action.
No One Can Stop Mr. Domino is a timeless classic.
Ditto Mr. Driller.
And Xevious 3D/G+

I can't believe no one's mentioned this one yet.
I'll also recommend Ridge Racer Type 4, and Einhander.
