I got a model 1 Sega CD today, and I'm not sure it works. I plug it into my model 2 Genesis, turn it on, and the green "Ready" light turns on. The BIOS screen comes up, but no Sega logo.

What should I do?

I would say to clean the contacts on the Genesis and see if that works, that's usually what happens when the contacts are dirty. I've also heard a few people have problems with the model 2 Genesis connecting to a model 1 Sega CD, but it does indeed work,I just tested it and it seems to work fine, the only thing is the Genesis is raised on the left side and it just dosent look right.

I just repaired mine not long ago. I am going to need more info than what you posted. Here are a few things to try:

1. Audio CD
2. Does disk even spin
3. Do you hear the laser engaging
4. Does the tray open and close properly etc.

On mine, I had to replace the KSS-240a laser.

It powers on, but it's almost like it's frozen at the BIOS screen.

Does the CD spin?

Does the CD spin?
I can't even get to that point. I opened it up, the cable connecting the CD and the board was unplugged, but plugging it back in did nothing. I get a screen like this:

But without the Sega logo.

Can I use a TurboGrafx-16 power supply as a replacement for a model 1 adapter? I want to see if it's the Genesis or the CD.

I think you can if it's 9V-10V and about 850mA, I don't have the Sega CD AC adapter in front of me. If I recall the Sega logo comes up only when the CD loads. Answer these questions to make it easier to diagnose the problem:

1) Insert an audio CD, look at the orientation on the tray. Close it (reset button to open CD tray), then wait a few seconds and open the tray, see if the CD has spun?

2) Does the tray open, close, then opens again after a few seconds?
3) Do you hear any buzzing or grindng sound?
4) When a CD is inserted does it still say on the screen insert a CD?
5) When you insert a CD does it remain saying open the tray by hitting the reset button?

I can't even open the tray. I'm going to try with a model 1.

You are holding down the reset button to open the tray right? (just to be certain)

Yeah, but it doesn't eject.

Ok manuall eject the tray, you will notice if you open the Sega CD, there are 2 latches on th side of the tray (rubber) that holds the tray. Turn the gear that moves the tray and the tray should slide out. Check to see if the tray hits the open and close sensor (it's underneath the tray on the right side). You may have to adjust the gears so that when you close the tray the switch makes contact. If you get the tray openned, turn on the system to see if there is any power to the tray to close it.
Another quick check is to turn on the system and hold the switch down, press eject to see if the tray slides out.

Note: I have been summoned into DP's chat, I will be there so it'll be easier to troubleshoot this. Plus I am playing Sakura Wars on the Wii at the same time...What fun :)

Okay, now that I manually ejected the tray it seems that the tray is off of the gear.

At least I got this for free.

Now the fun begins, you have to get the tray mech, the gear and the switch aligned. Best is to pull it all the way out and then push it in and gauge if you will hit the switch.

Ah,yea the drive is very fragile, it can be fixed but it will take some effort, the model 1's are really a pain in the ass sometimes.

I had one off the gear like that. I don't even know how to begin to describe fixing it. I just manually opened and closed it and watched what happened... about 200 times until I sort of understood what was supposed to happen. Then you can re-set the gear in the correct way.

I got it back on the gear, but I don't see the door switch everyone is talking about. Anyone got a picture of it?

If you look under near the rear of the tray and at the bottom of the gear, you will see the switch. It is like this small thing sticking out of the drive motherboard. The switch is very tiny but you should see it if you use a flash light. When you look straight down the tray from the front, on the right you should see it.

Do you have a picture?

How do I remove the tray itself? I could get to the gear and switch easily if it weren't in the way.

Sorry I don't have a picture. You might want to check out youtube. There might be a video that shows the area where the switch is.

The official adapter is 9V 1.2 Amps (1,200mA). The Sega logo Tupin's talking about will come up even with no CD inserted, and it will play music and start to spin Sega and SegaCD logos.

I'm trying to fix my Model 1's trouble of not ejecting the tray as well, but it looks like Tupin has another problem besides/in addition to the tray.
