View Full Version : The NGP - Price & final name predictions

As you all may know, Sony recently announced the successor to the PSP, tentatively called the "NGP" (Or "Next Generation Portable"). However, they neglected to mention a selling price, and were even vague on the final name of the gadget.

FINAL NAME

Let's discuss the name first. Obviously it's a successor to the PSP, and we have all been calling it the PSP2 for many years, but the fact that Sony didn't announce this name as being official leads me to believe that it's unlikely the official name will indeed be "PSP2".

Now Sony previously called the PSP redesign the "PSPgo", so this makes me think that the official name for the NGP will be something equally as stupid. After all, just calling it "PSP2" is too simple, right?

But, also consider that there are rumours that this thing will be as powerful as a PS3, so this makes me think that perhaps they will choose to give it some kind of PS3 branding, such as "PS3P", which would perhaps explain why they have been reluctant to release any further details regarding the official name of this new handheld...

Many people assume that NGP is going to be the final name. I doubt this very much, and if it were then Sony would have announced this at CES in January. NGP would also not be a very good three-word acronym, as NGP is more commonly used to describe the Neo-Geo Pocket, so this would cause a lot of confusion amongst gamers on the internet

If I were a Sony exec, I would naturally want the final name to be reflective of the PlayStation brand, therefore it would have to be called "PlayStation something..." - If NGP is indeed going to be the final name, then it is more fitting that it should stand for "Next Generation PlayStation". PlayStation has to factor into the name somewhere, or at least I would expect it to

If the final name is not "PSP2" or "PS3P" then Sony are very stupid people. But given their past reputation for naming things (PlayStation "MOVE" anyone?), I wouldn't put it past them to name this thing the "Pocket PlayStation" - Hmm, that reminds me, they actually once tried that with the PocketStation... Point proven I think!

PRICE

I think we're all expecting this to be expensive. That's a given. I also think you'd have to be an idiot to think that this thing will cost less than a PS3 - Just look at how much the Nintendo 3DS is due to retail at upon launch! If the NGP is under £250, I will be very surprised!

No, I believe this will be closer to the £300 mark. No doubt it will retail for around $350, which will naturally translate to around £280-£300 in rip-off Britain. I think this price is expected though, given the original price of the PSP and then the £150 price tag of the PSPgo when that was released (And then subsequent price drop by £50 only days later!)

A lot of people will say it's too much for a handheld game system, and there will inevitably be a backlash when the official RRP is announced - As there has just been in retaliation to the 3DS's extortionate price! However, consider that small technology is ALWAYS more expensive than larger technology of equal power. For example, a laptop will naturally be more expensive than a desktop PC of equal power. Likewise, a smartphone will be more expensive than a netbook, all because of its smaller form factor. Therefore, it's only logical to assume that the NGP will retail at more than the PS3 console...

What are your thoughts on these two NGP issues?

If Sony doesn't decide to use NGP as the new PSP, PSP Next wouldn't be such a bad name. I think they should just rename it to PSP2 though.

I think the price will be $299 for non 3G and $399 for 3G.

Does this really need it's own thread? It belongs in the main one already in progress, imo.

I'm guessing it will end up being called the Playstation Portable 2 and will retail for $299.99 USD for the WiFi only model and $399.99 for the 3G enabled SKU.
