I have tried using 2 different power cords. Both work fine on my PS2. So it's not the power cord. I do not have one of the reissues that Microsoft sent out for a recall. Do I need one of those? I have a lot of updated rosters for old sports games on this drive, so I really want to get this one back going at least to put the rosters on a memory card. I'm not very savy when it comes to opening consoles and fixing them. Is there somewhere/someone I can send this thing to to get it fixed? Should I try opening it up and cleaning something? Any advice would be appreciated.

You need to open the system, check if the power supply is a foxlink. Foxlink power supplies have a bad solder job and you need to resolder the power plug so it will work again.

Ok, the MFG date is 4-15-2005. Would that give any info as to if it's a Foxlink power supply?

Also, how do I open this thing up? Do I need to take off the 4 rubber pieces on the bottom to open it?

To Open the Xbox console, you will need a couple of special tools. You will need a TORX T-10 screwdriver and a Torx T-20 screwdriver. The XBOX case has 6 T-20 screws and to remove the hard drive and DVD drive, you will need to remove 3 torx T-10 screws. The power supply is held down by 2 torx T-10 screws.

I had the same problem several years ago. Multiple different power supplies didn't correct the issue, so as far as I could tell, it was a bad motherboard. So keep that in mind.

Bad transistor on the motherboard.

Ok, I'm still having probs with this Xbox. It appears the PSU is fine; there didn't appear to be any soldering problems. Is there anyway I can take this HDD out and retreive the data/save files that I need? Then, I'll just buy another Xbox and transfer the data with my Action Replay if at all possible.

not easily. The hard drive is locked with a secret key stored only on the motherboard. Put that hard drive in another system and it won't boot.

That console is one of the last few made, it's unlikely to have the recalled power supply. Either way, it's the most likely culprit. Damn near anything else would trigger one of the error codes on the power button of the console. If the mobo is completely blown, it is still possible to get the unlock code for the hard drive but it's not a simple process. You'd need to remove one of the chips from the board and read the data with a chip reader. From there, you could unlock the hard drive and lock it for another console.

swapping the power supply is probably the easiest attempt at getting the system to work... I had an issue a few years ago where mine wouldn't power on, ended swapping the power supply with a new one off ebay and voila, booted right up...

shake it a ton, and rest the front part of the xbox on a book, then it works. well at least thats how i fixed mine

This is common on 1.6 mobo's. A bad transistor. Can swap it with one from any other mobo. http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/1.6_Xbox_no_power.htm

Mine stopped working a while back. I haven't been able to use it since. I will try the suggestions mentioned here and see what works. I am looking for a new gaming system, and was wondering if anyone can tell me where I should look. There is a new hh gregg (http://ir.hhgregg.com/) near me, should I check them out? Thanks a lot.
