i was thinking about this while at work today and made me wonder
Which console had the most versions of itself.
and when i say that i mean how many designs of the same console have been put into production
Take for example the NES
you have the classic nintendo entertainment system we all know and love
http://images.wikia.com/nintendo/en/images/b/ba/NESconsole.jpg
then you had the Top Loader NES
http://tnca.myrmid.com/gfx/topload.gif
the famicom that started it all
http://famicomworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/famicom_biography3.png (although played different cartridges it was in a way the same console)
then 3rd party consoles such as FC Twin
http://www.warungdigital.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/fc-twin-system.jpg
i think atari might hold this title with its 2600 system but i don't know
what you guys think?

No doubt famicom if we count illicit clones. I guess genesis/megadrive would be for minor revisions most users have little reason to care about.

Gameboy Original
Gameboy Black Version
Gameboy Clear Version
Gameboy Pocket (Red, Green, Blue, Silver, Black, Yellow and MANY Special Edition ones)
Gameboy Light (Gold, Silver and Special Edition ones)
Gameboy Color (rainbow colors)
Gameboy Advance (many colors)
Gameboy SP V1 (many colors)
Gameboy SP V2 (many colors)
There are Gameboy versions that have diamonds and there was a Tommy Hilfiger Gameboy
I am probably missing quite a few other versions.
Should I include Lukemorse1's Gameboy cab thing or the Gulf War Gameboy ^_^

i should probably revise this and say color versions don't count as its not a re design.. just a different color of a design :P i thought about the game boy too
but you can only go as far as the game boy color as the rest werent backwards compatiable ... i think

I don't know the criteria you're using to count (I'll rule out unlicensed products) but good god, Genesis or TurboGrafx probably win second to none. Sega licensed the hardware (and still does) to practically everyone under the sun and it even has its own Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variations_of_the_Sega_Mega_Drive#The_Wondermega.2 FX.27eye).

It has to be the Sega Genesis, not even counting the revisions of each version.
Model 1
Model 2
Model 3
Nomad
JVC X'Eye
CDX
Laseractive module
Those licensed clones, etc.
I haven't even counted the Japanese releases, that would really add to them. Mega Jet, Teradrive, etc.

Aren't there over a dozen revisions of the Playstation 2 hardware?
And what about Brick Games?

actually your right on that
Home pong got done and redone so many times i could probably write a book that is just a listing of the various versions of this.

I think you would need to do at least two lists. One for offical re-designs and the other list for copies. Maybe start with one system and get everyones ideas and move on to the next. Either way , it is a tall order....

Yeah, listing clones and adapters and such really is misleading.
As for official revisions, I'd guess Gameboy for handhelds, and PC-Engine for consoles.
