View Full Version : Does this game require the PS1 or something?

So, not long ago I bought the King's Field Dark Side box, a collection of the four main games in the series. I also have a modded PS2 on which to play them.

Now, games 2, 3, and 4 work fine. 1, though, is an odd case--the PS2's browser detects it as a PS2 game, and whenever I try to load it, it just sends me back to the browser.

I thought this might be an error with my copy, but somebody over at the Agetec Forums who has the separately-released copy (IE not the one from the collection) reported the same problem on his PS2.

So is this a sign that I need a modded (or a Japanese) PS1, or is there some other solution I should look for?

Thanks in advance and sorry if this is the wrong place for this post.

If that's an Japanese Set - King's Field 1 and 2 were both PSone games (The US #1 was really #2).

It sounds like there might be an incompatibility issue with the PS1 game in the PS2. I know of at least 3 PSone games that don't play right in the PS2, and two that don't boot at all in the PS3.

Might just be an issue like that. You may need a Japanese PSone...or a modified US one.

I don't know what exactly the issue is, but I can tell you that it's not because it's a PS2. I have the original Japanese King's Field (the one exclusive to Japan), and it plays just fine on my Japanese PS2. My fiance played through the entire game that way. I would guess that it would have something to do with the re-release, but if you know someone else who has the original like me and it won't work for him, then I don't know.

Is the other guy using a modded system as well? Could the modification somehow be screwing something up for the game? The first King's Field is a bit of a wonky game. It's a VERY early release, from 1994, and if you're not careful in the game's menus, you can even format your entire memory card in-game.

Aussie2B: What model of PS2 do you have? Mine is a slimline, SPCH-750001

I've heard that there are games compatible with some models of PS2 but not others.

And yes I've considered the possibility that maybe the mod-chip is doing it. What I'd really like to do is get a Japanese PS1 (not a mod) and test this game on that.

I'll contact that guy on the Agetec forum and ask him what his PS2 model is. Also, I should note that there were three releases of KF1 - the original, some sort of greatest hits re-release (I've seen this listed on eBay as "The Best!"), and the one in the compilation. I'm not sure if there are any actual code differences between them. Which version do you have?

(Actually, I wouldn't mind getting a modded PS1, but I think for the sake of a test a pure Japanese PS1 would be the best thing)

My Japanese PS2 is the original fat model, SCPH-39000. My King's Field is the original release from '94, not The Best re-release. I hope the info helps.

Maybe one of those import boot discs would help/

The dude on that other forum has the same mod-chip that I do. So I guess this case is just about closed, then?

Probably. I modded an old PS2 fat to play Melty Blood which didn't work. It just kicked me back to the browser. I ended up having to import a Japanese PS2. Those mod chips all end up obsolete sooner or later.

I just got an import copy of the game in the mail and I am having problems booting it up with a swap disc on my PS One mini system. I am going to try it on my original large Playstation before even thinking of buying a Japanese system.

EDIT: that didn't work either. I tried booting it up in the emulator ePSXe so I have confirmed that my disc works properly. I'll try burning a backup and see if that boots up on either of my PS1's. Could be that you absolutely have to have a Japanese system for this game...
