Never heard of this game until tonight and watched the teaser trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZqrG1bdGtg&feature=player_embedded), which left me speechless both times I watched it. The games concept sounds very promising, you rely less on guns and more on actual survival. It's also said to have a leveling system of some kinds, which makes it sound like a serious version of Dead Rising with a dash of L4D, which I'm sure a lot of people will welcome with open arms.

If the game is anywhere near as incredible as the trailer, then I think survival horror has found it's new messiah.

Looks ok cinematographically. Who knows what the actual game is like tho....gameplay will make or break a game like that for sure.

That's a really good trailer. Great music, good emotional impact. Nice way to separate their title from the thousands of other zombie games out there.

I've seen some other footage of this game, and it doesn't look anywhere near what it looks like in the trailer.

Don't believe the hype.

New footage or old footage? Because from what I understand, it was considered dead for a few years and just recently resurfaced.

The animation seems a bit odd, but it was very, very good overall.

If it can focus on the horror, the survival aspects, and dark atmosphere, this may be an instant "get" for me. I'm tired of games being labeled as "survival horror" and then end up being more action that anything else. Like when you compare the first Resident Evil to the others in the series: the first felt more like a survivial horror game, thanks to it's ambiance and suspense than the others that followed: the player did not know what was happening in the first game, so it felt...dark...and for me, a bit evil. The rest were...like an action horror movie. But I digress.

I hope this game delivers. I haven't had an actual "survival horror" game in quite some time.

The trailer is amazing but as everyone is saying, the gameplay will have to match that. It's certainly got me interested though.

Wow! I hope the gameplay holds up to the cinema. Never been moved by an opening zombie scene before...

*me blows nose and get's an axe.

Edit: Jeez, I just can't get over that intro. I've watched it a dozen times! Very well done. The score is quite touching also.

Also hope it can differentiate itself from Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead somehow outside of a different setting.

I'm not sure. The bottom line though, is that anybody thinking the game is going to actually look a lot like that trailer is kidding themselves. There is no chance it ends up actually looking like that. Maybe if it was a launch game for PS4 or something.

It was more than likely the footage from it's original build, which was way back in 2008, so it more than likely looks completely different in 2011. Nobody is saying it's going to look like it does in the trailer, but the trailer does leave a lot on what we could expect from the game.

Nobody is saying it's going to look like it does in the trailer

Nobody is really saying it specifically, but I think that for some reason, there are people that in the back of their mind think the graphics might look close to the trailer, and I think those people are fooling themselves to believe that. I wish it looked that good, believe me....

I remember coming into this generation with the Xbox 360 back in late 2005 thinking that it might be capable of some amazing things... In fact, I remember when I first got my hands on Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter in early 2006. When that game first starts, it has an intro that was really amazing, and I remember thinking that before the 360 was actually released, I actually thought that graphics like that (in game) were possible, and it really disappointed me to come to the realization that graphics like that just weren't going to happen in this generation.

I think at this point, we are all aware of what the PS3 and 360 can achieve and what it can't achieve, but for the peeps that are peeing themselves over this trailer, I think they are trying to live a dream and think that it might actually be close to the trailer. No chance.

Looks and sounds even better to me.

I could care less if the in game graphics were the same as the opening trailer. I never really thought they would be. I was referring to the plot line and game mechanics.

The Author of the review campares it to a mix of L4D 2 and Borderlands. With a leveling up system and different player classes. Sounds like win.

While the game probably won't have that emotional feeling the trailer has, they recently released some gameplay footage (http://www.gametrailers.com/video/to-kill-dead-island/714102) and it sure does look fun. It looks like Dead Rising meets Borderlands and with the option of 4 player co-op, it could turn out to be a very fun multiplayer experience.

Well we allready all said that we don't have the expectations of the trailer for gameplay. No one seems to listen. But the game itself still looks phenomenal. Little bit of Fallout 3 thrown in there 'workbench' wise. Awesome!

I had pre-ordered it through Amazon and it came today. Graphically (PS3) it looks great.
I have been exploring the island (I played for about an hour tonight), and am just on chapter one. Therefore, I can't really make a fair judgement, but I can say that I am not overly enjoying the game yet.

Combat is mostly melee based (so far), and leveling takes quite a while (maybe I am just playing the game wrong). I have found only one side quest (annoying quest). One cool thing is that you can throw your weapons at the zombies! Also, thankfully, there are a lot of energy drinks (healing) scattered around the resort. The zombies are brutal in groups!

Hopefully when I have some time to invest I will be able to make a better judgement.

Picked this up last night and so far I'm really diggin it. Sitting at level 6 right now with about 7 quests on the go. This game is a hybrid of L4D and Fallout 3 which is FKN awesome!!

Also this is a pretty creepy game as well; I found myself jumping off the couch when they grab you from behind, spin ya around and start chompin on ya. I'm about 3hrs in and this has now become my favorite Zombie/Horror game since RE2.
The combat feels really good and the heavier weapons o have some weight to them, the zombies themselves come in a array of different types. walkers are your typical RE style zombie, Infected act just like the Horde from the L4D series and the thug is a real bitch! There are others as well but I haven't found them yet. The sense of isolation is really well done as well, unlike most of the survival/horror games this is what I think a zombie outbreak would be like.

BUT... if you didn't enjoy the newer Fallouts and Elderscrolls this might not be your cup of tea. As the game is very heavy on exploration and ransacking stuff for money and items.

worth every penny unlike another recent horror game release..screw you Alma.

Picked this game up yesterday and only put it down momentarily when a friend begged me to play Uncharted 2 with her. It's a nice blend of Borderlands, Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, so fans of any of those games will find something to like. The game is also well balanced, meaning you don't have to grind if you don't want to and you're almost never completely outnumbered, that is if you play it safe. You can pretty much go anywhere you want from the start and it's encouraged, since you'll almost always find a sidequest to do.

I'm only on Chapter 2 and I must have put 5 or 6 hours into it already, while it's far from perfect and I do wish you were able to make more decisions other than accepting/declining a quest (at least from what I've seen so far), I think this really is a step in the right direction for the genre. So don't write it off because of the "misleading" trailer and early gameplay footage like most have, because it really is worth checking out.

Forewarning, there seems to be a problem with the autosave on all platforms, it sometimes doesn't save and will rollback to your last checkpoint next time you load it up. I haven't experienced it yet, but a lot of people have been complaining that they lost a lot of progress because of it and nobody knows what triggers it. They announced that they're releasing a patch ASAP to fix this and other problems (rumor is on the 9th), so hopefully this will be fixed by the end of the week.

You mean the ones you can pick up and throw? As of right now, only use I've had for them is throwing at incoming enemies and the Thugs. I'm sure if you shoot them and/or set them on fire they'll explode rather quickly.

I've found three ways to get them to explode, first as exit suggested if you set them on fire, or throw them at something on fire they'll explode. Also, there's an area of the game with electricity arching everywhere, and that will cause them to explode. Finally later in the game you get a gun (Every review of this game mentions it... Don't think that's too big of a spoiler) and if you shoot one they explode.

After playing it for some time the last couple of days I think the most fair comparison is the game is a mix of Fallout 3 and L4D. Not that that is really a bad thing both of those games rank pretty high on my list. I've kind of always wanted a zombie themed RPG and this does deliver on that front. Not a bad buy at all.

People are quitting mid game by using the XMB/Dashboard to turn off the system instead of quitting in game and then quitting the game. It's not a problem with the game, it's a problem with the people playing it. Not you, but seriously. Common sense people. If you are in the middle of the mission and you're going to quit, then exit in game then exit to XMB or turn off the system. When did people get so lazy?

That last part was a rhetoric question btw.

I picked up Dead Island on the Release day. I was looking foward to the game coming out for sometime.

I myself really like the game so far.. I have only put in 2 to 3 hours play time on it and have not played the online multiplayer yet.

The only 2 problems I have with the game.. 1. there is just too much stuff to pick up like money, weapons, and everything else. 2.The Zombies overwhelm pretty quickly which is not too bad once you get a hold of good weapons but before that your weapons break down very easly which can leave you to fight several zombies with just your hands.

Overall I think it's a cool game so far.. What do you guys think?

It's not a problem with the game, it's a problem with the people playing it.

Not sure where you got that idea from, but there's an issue with the autosave and it's already been confirmed by the developer that it's a problem. They're releasing a patch today that should fix a lot of the issues, only downside is it's said that you will lose some of your stats such as ID's and collectables as a result. So if you aren't too far into the game it's not a problem, but for those who are a good ways in (such as myself) it's kind of a downer.

The first person melee combat is a huge turn-off for me. The kicking and punching looks so boring. Reminds me of Condemned 1/2 (i.e. Shit Sandwich).

I started it this morning but I'm having a bit of a problem understanding the whole weapons thing.

I just started doing the first sidequests after getting everybody to the lifeguard building. In my weapons inventory, I had two slots filled, one for blunt weapons and one for sharp weapons and I could switch between them by pushing RB. So far so good. I don't know what the heck I did but now for some reason I only have one slot available and for any weapon I find, I have to drop the one I'm currently using to pick up the new one. Doesn't matter if it's a knife or a paddle, I have to drop my equipped weapon to take the new one. Also, when I go to the upgrade/repair station, it says that I have a knife and a wrench I can repair/upgrade but I have no access to either one of them. They don't show up on that weapon inventory wheel thing and as of right now it looks like I have four empty weapons slots I could be using but I can't seem to put anything in those slots.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something obvious but this is very annoying.

misfits859

If you're having to drop one to pick a new one up then you've probably maxxed out your weapon slots in your inventory. Sell or drop something.

If you press Up on the D Pad it should bring up your inventory list and view what weapons you're holding, then you can drop what you don't want. Note: Items such as alcohol bottles (you can trade them for Molotovs) and Med Packs take up space as well, otherwise you can hold an infinite amount of everything else.

I'm also enjoying this game immensely. The change from the resort to the city was like night and day and it's fantastic. The amount of fear and dread that you get simply going from point to point in the city is spot on how it should be. If you're playing solo then you're by yourself in a city that already didn't look so hot and now made worse by unknown amounts of zombies around every corner and looters ready to shoot you at first glance.

If I only had one complaint, it's about the constant need to feast on massive amounts of energy drinks and snacks. I feel like my character should have gotten type 2 diabetes twice already.

Had to shut off public slots, though. Whiny 10 year olds are a big no no in the zombie apocalypse.

Melee weapons are the way to go in this game, and don't put much stock in your firearms (at least up till now for me, bout halfway through at my guesstimate) so that could change. This game is glitching as hell though, with a bunch of different things.

Anyway, this game is getting crazy. I am 58% done the main story, am level 25, and am getting brutalized in the city.

Has anyone else noticed some amusing homages to films, etc? I just found "Dr. West." That must be a reference to Re-Animator?
