Behold the masters of the obvious as they unveil a little-known fact that all of us here have known for many years.

Geez, they're only about 20 years late with this article. Remember Flashgal? Yeah, the female vigilante that killed any and everything that crossed her. That's a heroine that needs to be recognized.
EDIT: In fact, I think digitpress.com needs a review of Flashgal and her adventures. Be ready, Joe. I'm going to work on it right now. :D

MORE than Eye Candy?
Well, I guess it's OK, as long as they KEEP the eye candy.

Not to mention I have female friends who won't keep playing RPG's unless they find the main duo (male and female) attractive looking. :D

How much money did this guy make for writing THAT?
That settles it. I have to apply for a job at CNN.

The female game journo that has my utmost respect is Imagine Media's Francesca Reyes. She's 100% hardcore. Jeanne has a great ass (witnessed firsthand at a press junket), but I wouldn't call her hardcore; more of a J.C. Herz type, alas. Achika, for example, has surely forgotten more about videogames than Jeanne will ever remember.

Jill of the jungle, Samas Aran, the princess in SMB2, a handfull of the kids in Maniac Mansion, Ninja Princess, the chick from Quartet(mary?), ect.
They ARE 20 years late with that article....or just plain ignorant/stupid.
I'm going with stupid on this one.

I'm wondering what purpose this article served? They cited some pretty off the wall games that the "casual" girl gamer looking for a role model would probably care less about. Nice to know gaming is in the news, but maybe if it's something that doesn't show much of a point, it's best left unsaid? :hmm: :/
Oh, and the comment about the Sims "portraying how women are" ...um, when I play it shows the female characters as bitchy sluts that kiss the neighbors instead of the husbands. GREAT ROLE MODELS

Since we're already knee-deep in pure geek bitterness, I should point out that most of the female characters you named weren't around twenty years ago, Laddie. And it's "Samus" Aran.

first off, I think Metroid it teh SUCK, so i don't really care how it's spelled, and second, many of those are getting pretty close to 20.

Close enough for CNN's Technology section, I suppose.
Anyway, I can at least give the article's author some credit for not mentioning Tomb Raider or its heroine, Lana Croft.

LOL So true!
If I remember correctly, it even says in the manual how a sim can marry more than one person. And that on top of this polygamy, the manual says that you have to watch out that the 2+ husbands/2+ wives dont meet and start duking it out. @_@

Hey, I always thought the definition of slut was "a woman who sleeps with everyone," and a bitch was "a woman who sleeps with everyone but you."

Exactly what I thought. I don't think you can ever look for meaning in the mainstream press when it comes to *anything* let alone video games. They'll report what they want and the rest be damned.
Just be happy it wasn't an anti-violence article instead of a fluff piece (not to put down women in gaming or anything, just agree with the 'jeez, this was news when Samus first appeared' sentiments).

My definition of bitch was "down right nasty to everyone" which is how my Sims was, but ended up kissing the neighbors anyhow. ;)

Sure, but what's a woman who doesn't sleep with everyone, but still won't sleep with you?
Normal, I guess, as far as I've seen...
