Picked it up Tuesday. By far, the best Ys game of the XSeed trio, imo. Well, cause it's all 2D sprites and I love Sprite. :P
But seriously, Chronicles is becoming a serious contender to being my favorite Ys game of all time (Ys Book I&II Turbo CD ver.) My deluxe set is the minimalist of the three (soundtrack & box) but the cheapest @ $29.99. A nice tradeoff.
What are your thoughts?

I preordered it from Amazon with free super saver shipping so haven't received it yet.

Decided not to pick this one up yet. I recently finished Y's Legacy on the DS, so getting practically the same game again is a no-no for the time being.
I will get this some time in the future, hopefully when it's been lowered in price.

The PSP vers. (so far) is superior in every way to the DS one. Trust me, I have both. Sadly, was disappointed how they f*#ked up the ram/stylus feature so much. But Chronicles was made by Falcom in-house plus the option to play Complete, essentially you're getting a 4-in-1 deal.
The only upset I have is XSeed forgot including the Turbo soundtrack, which is by far the best, but Chronicles comes a hair-away in second.

There's a premium of Chronicles?
Every launch copy has a premium box and soundtrack cd.

There's a premium of Chronicles?
It's called the "Hair Metal Pack", believe it or not, but it's the only physical version available now.

Hopefully I can snag a copy this weekend.
My girl previously bought me the deluxe editions of Ys 7 and Ys III, but it looks like i'll have to pick up I and II myself.
I really wish they would bring Ys Origins to the PSP. Reviews said the PC version was only so-so, but damn if it doesn't have some of the best, most epic-rockin' original Ys music I have ever heard. I have listened to the OST with a fair amount of consistency for several years now. I would love a game to go with the music. ;)
But with all of the confirmed YS PSP games now brought stateside... Bring on Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky!!!

Just curious: Is there any non-prem version out yet?
I'm so tempted to buy this game. :)

If it's like other game, it is $30 for the premium and when the first run sells out it will still be $30 for the normal since every launch copy is premium.

So.. I've never played any part of the Y's series. I am, however, a sucker for premium packaging and soundtracks.
Is this a good place to jump into the series (given that it's a remake of I & II) -- is this the best Y's has to offer, or are the originals on Virtual Console the way to go? Or is there another game in the series that best expresses what sets Y's apart or defines its mythos?

The original is a good game, but if you want to talk about the most accessable and easiest to get into, it's going to be either Ys6 Ark of Napishtim, Ys Oath in Felghana, or Ys7. If you have a phat PSP then do not get Ys6 unless you get it for the PS2.

Why is that?
PSP version of Ys 6 suffers from long load times.

What Tron said. However, If you have a slim PSP, the load times on Ys6 are actually less than the PS2 version. I don't know from personal experience as I've only played the PS2 version, but there is a comparison video on Youtube and I've compared the times to the PS2 load times and they're better on the slim.

So if you own a slim, get it for PSP. If you own a phat, get it for PS2. The only thing with the PSP version is it has that stupid "Now Loading" staring you in the face every time you switch screens, so maybe the two seconds extra load time on the PS2 version isn't so bad.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a slim PSP so it's all good. Now to decide which game as my intro to the series (and my apologies if I hijacked this thread).
As I mentioned, I'm a sucker for premium packaging so maybe I'll go with Ys I&II Chronicles, but I'll look into the other PSP releases.
Turns out I don't have room for it on VC anyway, and don't feel like buying an SD card for my Wii.

Agreed while i like how the jdk band put there rock style of music in for chronicles.I just wish the game had included the (TG16/PCE) version of the sound track as well. Also is it me,but i find it weird chronicles has no spoken dialogue like what 'the TG16 version of Ys had.

Well Damn!
My girl picked up Ys Chronicles for me and I was all excited until I went to play it. It requires you to update your firmware to 6.25.
I am currently at 6.21 and I enjoy the various emulators, ports, and homebrew far too much to update my firmware. Hopefully they will have a soft mod/exploit for 6.25 before too long and then I can enjoy playing Ys Chronicles.

Truthfully, I wished Falcom had injected more retroness into Chronices cause the animation sequences to me reeked of stale lightning and the profile illustrations look like cookie-cutter hour at Manga 101. A few of the pestering shortcomings I've seen in RPGs these days.
I feel the whole thing be better off taking a few clips and cues from the old Ys anime. If you watched it, ya know what I'm talking about.

I got surprised by this. I found a sealed copy sitting on my desk when I came home one night. I mentioned to my roommate that it was coming out and I was planning to get it. He ended grabbing it for me as he owed me for some Blu-rays I got for him on the cheap a while back (and almost forgot about :ass:). I haven't gotten around to playing it yet but it sounds like I need to full charge my PSP so I can update the firmware...again. It seems every time I decide to play my PSP I have to do that first. :smash:
I wish Xseed had made the boxes for Ys 7, Oath, and I&II the same size. My box for 7 is slightly larger than the other two and the collage image they have on the spines looks a little off. Speaking of collage images, or whatever the actual name is for images broken up like that, are there different box arts? I could swear I saw one that was different from the one I have where they have the Ys logo stretched across the spines. Can anyone confirm this? On the boxes I have it just has the cast from the games.

Yeah, those are on the UMD cases that come inside the oversized box.

Finally started playing this today, ended up playing for close to 4 hours. I love it loads more than the DS version.
What is different over the chronicles and complete versions?
