They're releasing another iPad already? Either developers take advantage of the iPad 2 and the original iPad won't be able to run the game, or make a game that can play on both and makes the upgrade to iPad 2 useless.
I wonder how quick this one will sell. Basically, how many retarded people will throw $500 down on something that's just not worth it. Sony, Microsft, and Nintendo could learn from Apple when it comes to marketing. The iPad 2 is pretty weak in comparison to the both the 3DS and NGP but they're anticipating for it to sell well at $500 at the very least, and yes it's probably going to happen.

It has an Apple logo on it, therefore it will sell. The upgrade does seem a bit negligible though. I figure eventually there will be a version of the OS that isn't compatible with the original iPad. But surely by then we'll have the third or fourth version.

There will be programs specifically designed to take advantage of the specs of the iPad 2. It's only logical. Or games, for instance, that will work on the original, but with option settings from the programs menu, have upgrades only available on the iPad 2. Similar to the N64 and Perfect Dark, for instance.

Thanks for calling me, and the rest of us that want one, retarded.
I seriously doubt people will buy it JUST for the games. Many of us want it for other reasons sans gaming, you know. You shouldn't really compare it with a gaming console, as it has more similarities to a computer than anything else.

I thought we were past the point where calling someone "retarded" is an insult. It's like making fun of the handicapped because they can't walk.
As for who here will throw down $500 for something that's "just not worth it" - pretty much everyone on this board. We all spend our money on things that others think are crazy or frivolous. And to a point, they're right. No one buys an iPad because they have to. They buy it because they think it's a nice device, and they want to. So what?

Kupo doesn't live in the real world. Stick around long enough and you'll see it clear as day.
As to the iPad 2 being worth it or not, I'm actually disappointed that the rumors of having the Retina display didn't pan out. The dual core processor is nice, but not enough to get me to drop the cash to get another one. I'm sure there will be some apps that require the faster processor, but I'd suspect that most developers will make their apps work on the older one as well, just to expand their market. It won't be until an OS is released that doesn't support the iPad 1 that we really start to see apps that flat won't work on it.
But for those that didn't take the plunge on the iPad 1, this is an amazing tablet to start off with, especially since the price stayed the same as the original. Both mine and my wife's get used daily, even if it's just for surfing the web. Being extremely portable and easy to pick up and use are keys in a product like this and Apple nailed it right out of the gate. The iPad 2 is a nice upgrade, but it's an evolutionary product where the iPad 1 was a revolutionary one.

Question: How much RAM does the iPad 2 have? Not even Apple's website state this...at least not immediately.
I would presume 512MB, though part of me wishes it to be 1GB. :)

In Mexico the iPad sold pretty well, sold-out in past December. Even my sister bought one for her 9 an 1 year old daughters !!
Even if the prices are higher in Mexico, too many people wanted the tablet and i think that is a very good product, Apple is a marketing genius and the interface is genius as well, event the 1 year old child can use it !!!!!!!!
Is quite fun to see a 1 year old child navigating trough the menus, looking for an App .... in this case is a ladybug that repeats what you say in "up-tempo" and you can tap the iPad to get a reaction from the bug .... pretty stupid but fun for a kid.
Is not the best device, but it is a very good companion :D

Still unknown, it seems. But he does make a valid point about RAM being 1GB, though I've seen tablets show 1080p at 512MB, so that may be also.

I apologize about calling those interested in an iPad 2 retards. It's just a figure of speech adding to what I think about the product and its value, not anything personal.
Anyways. I'm aware that the iPad 2 is similar to consoles like SNES, Genesis, PS2, or 360, the successor to the original, but the first iPad just came out last year. It's just too soon of a release.

With the iOS and the ways is works in "multi-tasking", an extra 256Mb can make a huge difference in performance and capabilities, many updates of a Mac OSX run faster, so the same could be applied for Apple's devices.
The iPad 2 couldn't be a huge leap on specs because they have will give great support to the millions of the original iPad consumers .... maybe that is the work of the iPad 3 ?

But it's usually like this for any electronic device. In fact, in computers is much worse: you get a brand new, state of the art computer...and just DAYS after you get it, a manufacturer announces something 5 times more powerful. It can take days, weeks, or months, but everything we have is "defunct" in technological terms.
I've noticed Apple releasing their products around once a year, so the release of the iPad 2 now doesn't really surprise me, as it's roughly one year since it's release. And next year, at around this time, an iPad 3 will be announced, as well as possibly the iPod Touch 6 or whatever they make at that time.

Already? It's been just shy of a year. This kind of tech gets old fast, and with the Xoom and all kinds of other pads on the way, its get new or get screwed. The dual core was a necessary jump and the new iPhone will also be running the A5 chip. The extra processing power won't hurt anything.
Just look at droid devices. The OS may be free, but makers are churning out so much shit, that they are outpacing themselves every 3-4 months. They drop support of their devices long before iOS suppoert has been dropped. Oh noes! Apple phased out additional updates to a 2 year old device. Motorola phased out support of their android phone after 4 months. Fuck getting that new update! Learn to jailbreak and jump through 50 hoops to get it to attempt to stay relevant in another 6 months.

It'll sell quite quickly, it's replacing the iPad1 completely. No retail shops are getting new ones, old stock has been dropped 100 bucks and once they are gone, all you'll see is the 2. Stop looking at is soley as a gaming device. Thats just not what it is. Like a netbook its a hybrid that is designed to a bit of everything.

QFT.
I want one for several reasons, not because I am an Apple fan. Far from it, as this will be my FIRST Apple product. And the reason I want it was the same reason I needed an ebook reader. But why just have an ebook reader when I can have a mini computer that does that, MUCH better I may add, and do other things a regular computer can do? Sure, it's a tad expensive, but at least I know I will use it to the max, making it worth the cash I invest in it.

Help a noob out. I know only a little about 'app-based' devices, but will be getting a tablet this generation having never owned a smartphone (unless you count the phone/pda thing I used to have). My understanding is that the app marketplaces are very different between android and apple, namely in that every app costs money from apple, and most apps don't cost anything for android. Is this true? To get the most of one versus the other, am I going to have to spend significantly different amounts of money on apps?

There are a ton of free apps on the iStore, but it does seem that most of the really good ones have a cost to them. But even the ones that have a price tag attached usually offer a free version that is limited in some way (fewer levels, less features, etc). So you can at least try them out.
The most I've spent on an app is $9.99 with the bulk of them coming in at .99 or 1.99. You can even catch sales on a pretty regular basis to get stuff cheaper.
I'm not as familiar with the Android market though, but I have heard that there are many more free apps than on the iStore. Probably has something to do with being a more "open" environment. I don't believe that there is a cost to put an app on the Android market, while there is a $99 fee to do so with Apple.

There are free applications for the iPad, but it's usually a demo or one of those Farmville type "it's free, but everything in the game that you want costs $$$" games. There are a few apps that are free and well worth it, but it's not every day you see this.
However, many of the apps are really cheap. I purchased many for just $1, at most $3. Some others cost a bit more, like $10 for the MS Office like apps (I think it's $10...), but those are apps you WILL use frequently, so it's worth it.
Speaking of which, is there an OpenOffice type app for the iPad for free?
Anyway, the Android market has many free games, which makes it better in that sense, but some apps are now slowly being charged for. Also, some apps will only appear on the iPad (and vice versa), and are usually exclusive to it.
I honestly would like to have two tablets, but I decided on the tablet that I think will have the most support.

I have to agree with 98PaceCar. As a current iPad owner there's not much of a reason for me to upgrade ... yet. I can't imagine using the rear-facing camera for taking pictures, although I suspect some games will use it (iPew (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ipew/id333769147?mt=8), anyone?). The front-facing camera will obviously be convenient for Facetime or Skype.
I suspect developers at least at first will be hesitant to write dedicated apps to use the faster processor, especially with 15 million current iPad owners out there. In a few months I'll probably get a 3G one (mine is wireless only) and pass my current one down to the kids, who already hog it from me on a regular basis.

I seriously hope this isn't true.
Like the article states, it will be a huge bottleneck if it's only 256MB. I was thinking perhaps Apple has yet to state the RAM amount because they are still unsure whether to put 512MB or 1GB of RAM.
512MB should be the bare minimum.

I think it was MaximumPC magazine that said we should wait until at least July to buy a tablet. A variety of them will be released. I want a Windows based one, though I heard there is a dual OS tablet coming as well.
iPad is following the iPhone release schedule...which has clearly been successful. I suspect they are also beating those other tablets to market to maintain/increase marketshare/dominance.
The processor upgrade is fantastic, the cameras are being hyped (whoopie). Memory, storage, and lack of a new screen are all let downs. I think it is a given that we'll see a new screen in the next iteration...and let's hope for 128GB model and 1-2GB RAM.
Then 4G!!! We can stream video from our slingboxes at home to our iPad2's. Might even work for OnLive eventually.

You can't compare the iPad2 to the DS or PSP. The DS and PSP are gaming machines first and foremost, while the iPad is many things in one device. I do agree it's over priced, although it's cool device. If it was $300 of less, I might consider one?

Since I didn't bite on the the 1st iPad I'll be in on this one.
Having experieinced everything that the 1st has to offer thanks to my better half getting one for XMas I was sold - but I knew this announcement was inevitable so I held off on getting my own.
Magazine, comic and book reading, web surfing and iOS gaming is a shit ton of fun on the pad, and with the added processor speed and bonus of Skype-ing with camera, I don't see much of a reason to wait for the third iteration.

Well, tomorrow is the moment of truth: how much RAM will the iPad 2 have?
I doubt I will be able to pick one up in the next few days, mainly because I read that PR will have to wait as there is no expected date to sell the iPad. I just hope this is a false rumor, since puertorricans seem to love false news.
I seriously hope it has at LEAST 512MB of RAM...

I understand wanting to know how much RAM the iPad 2 has, but it really doesn't matter as long as everything runs smoothly. Unlike a computer, the OS and apps are custom built and optimized to run specifically on this device.
