View Full Version : A few questions about Retron 3 and other clones

Hi, I am interested in getting a good clone (or the best there is). I have a few questions that I've had trouble finding the answers for in reading reviews, forums and watching YouTube vids. They are:
1) With the Retron 3, can I play all three systems with just one SNES or Genesis controller (since they have enough buttons), or do I need to hook up each original controller for each system? I don't want to use the wireless controllers it comes with (which I assume work for all three systems, though).
2) How does it compare to the Retro Duo, which seems to be other clone of choice? I assume both of these are better than FC Twin and FC3?
3) Is there a certain company that makes Retron 3, and do they have an official website to order from, or do they only sell through third parties, like on Amazon, eBay, etc?
4) Are the internals of Retron 3 virtually the same as other "on a chip" clones, like stuff by Yobo, or the RetroDuo? Are they all working from a basic "NES on a chip," "Genesis on a chip" emulation that is modified for each one a little differently? (In other words, if I got some older Yobo clone of NES would it basically be the same quality as the NES portion of the Retron 3?)
I'm confused about these clones as I only find bits and pieces of information here and there with a lot of contradictions. It seems there's no one unified place for good information about them.
Thanks.

NO. NES only work for NES, SNES only work for SNES, and Genesis only work for Genesis. I agree it would have been neat if you could have used SNES on all 3, but it is not the case.

The RetroN3 Revision 2 is probably the best clone out there. Excluding the terrible wireless controllers.
3) Is there a certain company that makes Retron 3, and do they have an official website to order from, or do they only sell through third parties, like on Amazon, eBay, etc?
DDRGame is the U.S. distributor for Hyperkin products. You can buy from them, but this would not be smart. Since they are a wholesaler for these products they can only charge MSRP ($69.99). We have them on sale for $49.99 here: http://stoneagegamer.com/retron3.aspx

No the RetroN3 Revision 2 has the latest NOAC. It can play Castelvania 3. Most of these companies get their stuff from the same place, but the RetroN3 Revision 2 is the latest one that seems to have the most up to date clone hardware.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know who is making the NOACs? Is it the same company that is making the SNES-on-a-chips and Genesis ones?

I had a problem playing after burner, but I think that is because it is Tengen.

I have not had the chance to play one myself, though I'd really like to. We sell them at the store I work at. We also sell FC Twins and used to sell FC3s. While we used to get complaints about the Yobo products, we've never had any complaints about the Retron 3.
I always try to steer customers toward the Retron 3, if only because it has the original controller ports on it.

Do you sell the first or second revision? I'm looking to buy a newer one. Does anyone know if the Retrozone NES Powerpak works with the NOAC in the second revision?

I have no idea about NES Powerpak since I don't own one, but the one we carry is version 2. It says it right on our site: http://stoneagegamer.com/retron3.aspx

I have not played the 2nd revision. The first revision, however, was a very nice system indeed. Although I was bummed that it didn't play my Castlevania III cart, I do love the build quality much better than that of the FC Twin/Retro Duo system. Having all three control ports for the various systems was awesome as well. I'd go for the Retron3 for sure. AND, for the record, S-Video out for Genesis games is quite nice too.

Want I want is that Gopher Sega Genesis Portable. How is the quality on that and how is the screen. Any problems with loading the roms?(like do any not play???)
Thanks-
Tom
The 2nd revision of retron3 playd Castlevania 3 but with reverse sound channel.
I don't understand why did't they just put the NOAC in Retro Duo in retron3 instead of the update "newer" NOAC that still does the sound wrong. It doesn't make any sense.
