View Full Version : People really have NO clue about N64 importing

Check out this madness:

It's insane enough that this ended at over $400, but look at the description. Made by Sega? Only 500 copies? Only *50* copies? The sad part is that, given the ending price, people actually believed that baloney.

There aren't any copies up at the moment (nothing unusual for an N64 import), but I know I've seen this game listed on eBay multiple times with BINs around 40-60 bucks and even then people weren't going for them because they were too much.

And with a quick check of Japan Yahoo, I see multiple loose copies (no complete ones at the moment) with BINs of around $20 like this one:

http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b119970115

This is like the silliness of Bomberman 64 all over again, except much, much worse because that game actually has some rarity to it being the last N64 release in Japan. But when there's a copy under $100 that sits on eBay forever, I bet there are a few people out there that regret forking over a few hundred.

I guess this must be a result of there not being a ton of people into importing for N64, so there's not much info available for the few that are. I gotta admit, even I don't know what's fair sometimes, but when all else fails, I shoot for under 15 or 20 bucks shipped.

Hah, that's fucking insane.

I think it's down to OCD and the N64 being the least import-attractive system out there. $430 for a Puyo Puyo game can't be defended though, even if it's only for collecting.

While the price was really inflated in this auction, as normally happens on ebay, the game actually is one of the rarer N64 titles, equivalent to said Bomberman 64 and an auction site like Yahoo Japan is not an accurate reference point to gauge the actual market value of Japanese games.

I don't know about it being on the level of Bomberman 64. Most Japan-only N64 games are pretty tough to find on eBay. It's not unusual to go months without a single copy of any given game to not pop up. I have seen Puyo Puyo~n Party more often than Bomberman 64, though.

Why do you think Japan Yahoo isn't an accurate reference point? It's the most popular auction site for the Japanese. Sure, some Japanese brick and mortar stores may price a game a bit higher and others a bit lower, but Japan Yahoo is a great reference, especially since any American can use a middleman to buy off of there as well, albeit with middleman fees that are usually another 20 bucks. I would expect eBay auctions to fall roughly around the Japan Yahoo auction prices + middleman fees. If the eBay auctions are way higher, something is definitely off.

As a side note, there was recently another auction for Puyo Puyo~n Party on eBay that "only" went for $50. I still think that's too high for the game and it's probably a reflection of that previous auction, but that shows that the game isn't worth even $100.

I was going to mention that auction also.
I purchased Puyo Puyo~n for ~$50 a couple years ago.
It certainly was surprising to see that is was published by Sega. Once again goes to show how US videogamers will just make up their own videogame histories, seeing as how most people believe Sega didn't start publishing for Nintendo until the Gamecube was out.

This version of Puyo Puyo is also on the Dreamcast, and is the least accessible Puyo game (besides the RPGs) for non-Japanese speakers.
There are many menus which can be problematic to guess at, and the game has plenty of other text. The better Puyo Puyo game to get for N64 would be Puyo Puyo Sun.

Yeah, Puyo Puyo~n is on PlayStation as well. I'm aiming to get both N64 Puyo games. Hopefully this madness won't affect Sun too, as right now it can be had for under $15. I just barely lost an auction for that one recently, so that sucked.

I recently just bought a copy on eBay for $40 after being outbid on other auctions that go insane. I figured it was because of the poor description, but the seller tells me it's complete and in good condition.

I don't collect N64 games, but I do collect Puyo Puyo. This has been a hard one for me to find. I don't have many Puyo games left to get, but the few I need go for big bucks due to being the last on their respected systems. Such as Puyo Puyo 2 for PC Engine Duo. I just can't make myself pay that much for a game I already own multiple times. :) The joy of collecting Puyo games for me is that they are a lot of fun, and are generally really affordable.

Since when was Compile the same company as Sega?

Compile published the N64 version, not Sega. I can't think of one example where Sega published a game for a Nintendo console until the GCN. Where were some Sega games released on the NES/Famicom, but they were not published by Sega.

People would buy Superman 64 if it had Kanji all over it.

I dont feel bad at all for idiots who jump on auctions just because the word rare or a number less than 1000 is in the title. Do people not know how to research rare games?
