View Full Version : Games you used to own that you miss?

Somebody on another forum started this topic, I thought it would be interesting to discuss here as well. Games you used to have, but for some reason no longer do, and wish you did.
Personally, I used to have a nearly-complete Mega Man collection for the NES and SNES, but sold all of them except for MM3 and MMX1. Those are the games I most want back.
Also, Hook on the Sega CD. I'm honestly thinking of getting a new Sega CD just for this game (yes I know the SNES and Genesis versions are similar, but I liked this one the best).
So what are some of yours?

I have all the ones back that I wanted back, but I used to be a crack addict when it came to trading in my games to Funcoland/Gamestop so the list is too long to remember.
One I just got back recently was Crystalis for the NES. Love that game.
This does not compute. If I miss something, I just buy it again. If I don't currently own it, I don't miss it.

Thunder Blade and Choplifter for Master System - I traded them away for peanuts and now I have no SMS games, for shame.
Jurassic Park Rampage Edition on Genesis, had it and was stolen along with S&K. Both are missed to be sure.

You could have owned a game that you loved, but sold for some reason (to pay bills or something).
Then you regret selling it, but when you try to buy it again, you find out it's a super rare game worth thousands, something you are not willing to buy or just can't purchase for some reason (economic factors).
So thus, even though you want it, you miss it.

What kirby said is exactly what's happened to me--I simply can't afford to re-buy everything I've sold.

A long time ago I lost Illusion of Gaia for SNES and went on to miss it very much. I forget how much time passed since that happened, but the day I convinced my dad to buy me another company was one of the happiest of my life.
To a much smaller extent, I currently miss Ardy Lightfoot (also SNES).

I still have every game I've ever owned. I miss some of the stuff my brother had, though, like his Pac-Man watch and his NES games (the few I've yet to acquire for myself).
What I do really miss are my game boxes prior to '99 or so, which I had been throwing away. Who wants to kick me for throwing out the boxes for Harvest Moon on SNES and Castlevania Legends? Oh how much more my copies would be worth if I just saved those blasted pieces of cardboard.

Symphony of the Night
Secret of Mana
Illusion of Gaia(stolen)
Mega Man X
The ones I've gotten rid of was just retarded on my part. I do want them back, but even if I did own them, they'd just be collecting dust as I rarely use the original console to play them anymore. So haven't been too worried about getting another copy.

Planescape Torment, bought new by me and sold off on ebay about 8 years ago. The shit who bought it left a negative because the box had a couple light scratches you could only see in the light. He probably didn't even play it, just sat on his shelf.

TMNT - Nes
Bart Vs. The World - Nes
Bubble Bobble 1 + 2 - Nes
Lion King - Gen
Toy Story - Gen
Games I grew up playing but lost between then and now. What the hell did my parents do with my old gaming systems??

X-COM: UFO Defense - PSX
Lunar: Eternal Blue - PSX
Warhawk - PSX
Killer Instinct Gold - N64
Jet Force Gemini - N64
All hastily traded in at the same time for a new game or two during a period of moneylessness with the thought, "I've played these old games so much, I'll surely never come back to them after witnessing all the next gen gaming power." I miss X-COM most of all, despite its dated-even-for-its-time graphics, clunky interface and long loads, it was a true classic. It's also pretty expensive. Irony.
I also miss my LCD games:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Sonic the Hedgehog
Tiger Electronics Pinball
I just do not understand where these went, I've searched everywhere. Twice.
This does not compute. If I miss something, I just buy it again. If I don't currently own it, I don't miss it.
I miss my Boing!, trying to buy that again...impossible

Another casualty is my Atari Corp Hangman from mid 80s, grey box with colour photo and cart colour label. Finding that ever again is IMPOSSIBLE.

Back in the day, I traded a friend at school my copy of Castlevania 3 for a couple RPG's that I wanted to try. He let me borrow Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior 2, and Dragon Warrior 3. Before I could beat them all, he moved away. I got a pretty good deal I suppose, but I'd really like to find a copy of Castlevania 3 someday.

I only really miss the stuff that I can't emulate.
I definitely miss my NGPC and all the games I had for it. It was stolen. I never would have sold it.
I miss a lot of N64 games as well. Emulation still doesn't cut it for a lot of N64 games, so I plan on rebuying some of my favourites, especially Beetle Adventure Racing.

Owned it back in the 90's. I didn't really like the game as much as Waku Waku 7, so I traded it to a friend for his copy of the Macross: DYRL shooter for the Saturn (which I had sold off my copy previously). Now it goes for "crazy" money and DYRL goes for cheap. Ah well. I'm a Macross fanboy so it's all good.

I've never traded a game in to a retailer, and I typically don't sell games at all besides duplicates or unwanted acquisitions, so I've never sold a game that I ended up missing before, but I have had games I liked stolen, and I lost most of my old collection in a fire about 8 years ago.
I definitely miss The Ninja for the SEGA Master System. I have quite a few SMS games, and I believe all of the ones I owned when I was a kid, except for The Ninja, which sucks because it's one of my favorite games for the system. It's not uncommon but any stretch, I just never seem to come across it when I buy lots SMS games, and I rarely ever purchase single domestic Master System games.
I also miss Thunder Force III for Genesis. It's one of my favorite shooters, but I'm just to cheap to grab a copy of a common game for a 'normal' price. If I happen upon a complete copy for super cheap I'll nab it.
Legend of Oasis is another old favorite of mine I used to own that I haven't reacquired yet.
Project Justice is the only fighter that my wife would play since the original Street Fighter II for Genesis, so I'd really like to reacquired that game as well.
EDIT
I just remembered that I never reacquired Cloud Master for the Master System, and Ultima IV. Despite my dislike of 'repeating' games, I really enjoyed Cloud Master. I've never actually played Ultima IV, but I owned it and it mysteriously disappeared after a move. It's not usual to lose things in a move, but it was among all of my other SMS games that didn't vanish, and it just never resurfaced. I bought it for dirt cheap, not realizing that it wasn't a common title, and now whenever I see it for sale it's always expensive.
Steel Empire and Gain Ground for Genesis just came to mind also. I'm glad I saw this thread. It really made me think about some of the games on my retro to-get list.

It's really funny because when I was a kid I had a set of N64 games that I traded in for WWF Attitude on PlayStation (I was huge into wrestling at the time). The N64 games weren't anything special on the surface. Games like Extreme G, Mission: Impossible, WWF Warzone, etc.
But, years later, I missed all of my N64 games and the many great times they had brought. I ended up re-buying all the games that I remembered having (along with a few more)! Ever since that happened, I have kept every single game that I have purchased for the purpose of playing. I can't deny that I have purchased a couple of high-demand games for the purpose of rese... Well, we won't talk about that ;)

I agree. That way many of us who have yet to play the game can finally do so.
However, to many this is blasphemy, since it will mean that the current value of PDS will drop like a rock.

Rant on/
It hurts to see comments like this, especially about PDS. I know this it all just opinion, but i feel PDS is even more relevant these days than it was upon release.
It's been what... 13 years? The game is such a unique experience in every aspect and unlike any other game made before or since. The art design is second to none creating a believable alien world. The musical score by Saori Kobayashi is one of the most epic, surreal, haunting scores I have ever heard. The game mechanics, especially the battle system, dared to innovate and be different and it is still refreshing to play and holds up well to this day. But more than anything the story is still without equal.
The story combine with the art style and music delivers one of the most amazingly unique experiences I have ever had with a video game. Not to mention how it ties into the events of the first two games and delivers one of the greatest, cliff hanger, gut wrenchingly sad endings ever written.
So yeah... If anything, Panzer Dragoon Saga has become greater and more relevant amongst the sea of generic, faceless, games. The same crap day after day that gets released for game systems these days, few can hold a unique identity as PDS.
Rant off/
Back on topic.
When I was younger I had Shadow Blasters for the Genesis and absolutely loved it. It was like a platformer/ shooter with lite RPG elements. The game had such a dark Japanese feel and I beat it countless times.
Eventually I was like... "I have beat this game countless times. I have got my moneys worth. I wont miss it." So i sold it to help fund my Saturn collection. But over the years I have really wanted to play it again. One of these days I will track down another copy, but it's tough to find locally.
I think about how much I liked PS2 Drakan, & saw it recently at GS for $5, but never got it again. Champions of Norrath does everything that any similar action RPG does & more, even Diablo & Dark Alliance.
I did sell back Jaguar Alien vs. Predator & Syndicate for cash to buy Jaguar Doom back when it came out. I rebought them, but sold Syndicate again.
Also, if I play thru a longer game twice, I'll usu. pass it along. No reason going thru it a 3rd time. & if I get the hankering to buy/play a new game, I remind myself of all the other unplayed/unbeaten games I already have, which I dont have time to play, anyway.

Wraith Storm: You're right. I should have been much, much more clear, and I'm embarrassed that I wasn't.
*sigh*
I meant the graphics haven't aged well. I'm pathetic, I know. I remember playing it right after it came out and being blown away by it's graphics. Now, not so much. Same could be said for a bajillion games and me pointing it out is nothing less than disgusting, especially since I consider myself to be a retro-enthusiast. Sometimes especially with early-ish 3D games it's shocking to see their blockiness.
That said, I agree with you that it's story, music, art direction, and unique gameplay are in a league of their own. I still don't think it's worth tracking down and buying though, unless you are a hardcore fan of the series or a Saturn collector. It's really expensive.

Outback Joey, along with the HeartBeat Personal Trainer - Genesis.
I would probably just end up selling it again but to be able to say "yeah, I have one of those, complete" when it comes to the rarest commercially released Genesis game was cool for the short time I had it.

I was big into videogames as a kid. However, thinking back to how many games I actually owned... Not that many!
I rented a lot or would play over at freinds houses most of the time before finally getting an NES system years after all the other kids had one. Overall, I can remember only actually owning about 4-5 games yet playing many. Skyhawk, Star Wars, Ninja Gaiden 2, TMNT 2+3, Nightmare on Elm St., Mario, Zelda, Master Blaster, Yo Noid, Contra, Track and Field (with running pad), and the Mega Man games (I owned numbers 1+6 though number 4 was my favorite) were all a lot of fun. There's a lot of games I remember playing that I wish I could have again.
The original Blood Omen for the PC was a lot of fun. I think I still have it but it won't run on any of the newer windows systems (Windows XP or Windows Vista). Soul Reaver was another fun one I remember playing on the PC as well. I looked back at these games on youtube recently and the games seem pretty corny to me now but I really liked them back when they were out. Besides these, Jurassic Park Trespasser (very minimalistic yet still a fun shooter), Return to Kondor, Omikron (very wierd game), Operation Neptune, and various Apogee software games for DOS were also a lot of fun.
I had some great times with the Double Dragon games. Renting these on the NES created some fun times. I could never beat these as a kid but post-college I ended up revisiting these games about 4 years back beating all 3 but without the thrill factor it probably would've had if I had done it back when I rented them. There's a number of other side scrolling beat 'em ups I remember playing too. The Double Dragon, X-men, TMNT 2, GoldenAxe, and Magic Sword (just last week I finally remembered this game after coming across a youtube video of it) were all addicting to play as a kid but I'd always run out of quarters before being able to get too far.
Later games such as those on the N64 don't seem to hold up that well. However, Castlevania 64 and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire were some really fun games. So were some of the wrestling games but I always felt a bit short changed as these seemed to play better on the playstation.
Overall, I think arcades are the best way to recapture the magic of what it was like to play a lot of these games as a kid. If I could afford a couple arcade machines, I'd probably pick up Killer Instinct, Area 51, one of those beat 'em ups mentioned above, along with something wierd like Smash TV or something older maybe...

What I miss are the boxes and manuals I sold to buy games with before. But I am getting close to having them all back as well as boxes and manuals for games that I never had CIB copies of before. I couldn't believe I just found and bought a CIB copy of NES Tetris on ebay for $5 Buy It Now or best offer. In most cases I just bought all the cheapest listings because whenever I list wants here nobody usually has what I am looking for for sale. (I tend to want the good stuff that everyone here wants to keep)
I was big into videogames as a kid. However, thinking back to how many games I actually owned... Not that many!
I had the same experience. I owned a game case which held 10 games. I used it to hold my third-party games as I had thrown away those boxes. However, first-party games I actually stored in their boxes! In total, I owned around 15 NES games. I am sure that I played hundreds.

If I had money back then I would've bought more for sure. The way it worked out though, the games I ended up renting or getting to play always stayed fresh for me. It always felt like kind of a novelty to play a wierd game like Mario 2 vs. the better Mario 3 that I already owned and had played at freinds houses countless times before. I remember renting or playing at freinds all sorts of wierd/cool games that never lost their fun factor as a result of never really getting to own that many. In total, about 5 years after owning an NES system, I think I probably had no more than 6 NES games plus about 8 games like Operation Neptune and Commander Keen that I used to play on a Tandy computer.

I try not to look at video game reviews at all. They just seem to take the fun out of videogames by overly contextualizing. It's like besides taking the game as is, it's got to be compared as a knock-off to something else. It's like if a game is a lot of fun, it'll just get a bland average rating over at places like gamespot.
I can't remember what the case was with why Castlevania 64 was getting bad word of mouth but do know that like a lot of Nintendo 64 games the gameplay seemed to change a bit from what people may have been expecting due to the switch from 2D to 3D; a huge jump at the time where the sky seemed to be the limit. Secret levels/bosses along with different levels for each of the 2 characters you can play as were some minor perks that were a lot of fun. The first level chasing the giant ape skeleton was a lot of fun running through the rain trying to platform jump along a cliff, and finally ending up at a tower gate that introduced a 2nd level that felt entirely different. The later giant mansion levels with one including an outdoor area being chased through a garden maze by a frankenstein monster were also a few more highlights for me while playing it. Each level felt different and I had a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, I never had a chance to play the sequel to this so maybe I would've liked that more. The gameplay seemed similar so I probably would've liked it. Now, a lot of the 64 games seem to have aged a lot. Moreso than NES games it seems to me. I've been out of the loop with videogames for a while though so they probably haven't aged as much with me as those of you who are used to the graphics on the Xbox 360.
