While playing Space Invaders Collection to death, I finally took the time to play my new in box CV Gyruss. The arcade game has always been a favorite of me, and so far I had played the CV version just on MESS. The sprites looked too small for my taste and the game just didn't play right. But now, after playing it on the real thing, I see the conversion isn't this bad. I can think of a better version, but the game is fun nevertheless, and in fact even more challenging than the original one...

I like it except that you can't pause the game. In the manual it says you can but I could never get it to work.

Heh, if you want a REAL challenge as well as the best home port I've seen, try Gyruss on the GBA as part of the Konami's Arcade Classics pack. There's a 'enhanced' mode unlocked by the classic Konami code that adds three new stages to the front of the game, and they are NASTY. I usually finish them with one ship left! LOL

I also wrote a FAQ on the game pack at GameFAQ's. (shameless plug) :D

The NES version is very nice too, with a new boss stage. Interestingly it was released as a disk game in Japan...
Now, isn't the GBA version too hard on the eyes? I mean, the game objects are already small, with lots of tiny enemy shots...

No, it's actually not bad controls on the GBA. If you can't see, use a Game Boy Player. :) Or if you just wait a straight port, the PSX version released on Konami's Arcade Classics is the best I've seen.

The NES one is fun also, but with so many changes I can't call it a port of the arcade game.

CV version:
Looks nice IMO, probably a little better than the 5200 version. At first I found it a lot harder than both the 5200 and the C64 version. You seem to get hit by the ships as they fly off screen more often in the CV version. I've learned how to avoid this. I think the farthest I've gone is Level 21.

NES version:
It's alright, but everything is way too big. Shoulda called it bobblehead-Gyruss. Boss stages are interesting but don't add much.

Konami Collection GBA:
Very nice when played on the GBA Player and using a Wavebird.

IMO the C64 version is still the best outside of the arcade but I tend to play my CV and 5200 versions the most. Can you tell this is one of my all-time favs?
