I think he's just trying to get offers from people to get a feel for what it's worth. I know other people who have done the same thing.

Why not? eBay has had some nice listing rates (many times free) for months now, off and on the last few. Set the price crazy, and put a OBO... You never know, someone might go BIN and make your day. People get more real with their offers when they can be accepted and they are expected to follow through.
