I bought a " new console" from amazon ( world wide distributors through amazon actually). None of the bags are sealed but the console bag is taped. Also I can't help but notice some very light marks on the console and the heat sink on the back I can see a little bit of discolor. Did get a refurbished console? It has the dark box art and it says manufactured in Oct 2000

You don't want a new Dreamcast, they don't play burned games. If you got one that plays burned games, consider it a blessing in disguise.

You got a refurbished system. How much did amazon charge?

this doesnt make sense at all. Dreamcast is not being produced still. Chances are he got an old system under the assumption it has never been used. But by the sound of it....you got a refurbished console. Id complain seeing as how you thought you were getting a new one....

I don't think any DC has ever been confirmed as not working with the Mils-CD exploit.

My friend's couldn't do it. Some of the guys at this place had problems w/later models:
http://dcisozone.com/dreamcast-emulators.html

From what I remember the exploit was taken care of in the later models. However, someone may have made a boot disk to get around it. My DC doesn't need a boot disk unless it's to play imported games, but I know that some of my friends required a boot disk and some couldn't do it at all.

I would just go used for a DC. I bought mine used in 2001 for $50, still works like a champ.

If you bought the item from an Amazon seller, not Amazon itself, then you probably got a used console. Your description makes it sound like one.

File a complaint with Amazon about the seller for being misleading about the item. You might be entitled to a refund (and have to return the item to the seller.)

its not an individual seller, it is an amazon store called worldwide distributors... it is the one that is amazons default for selling the new dreamcasts.

Well, it's a store front. Still, contact Amazon and let them know, maybe they can help you.

When you look at the dreamcast in the item listing it says "buy new: $92.06", but as soon as you click on the item on the main item page it just lists $92.06 w/out mentioning new. However, it does NOT list refurbished either. I think you have a legit complaint.

just got off the phone with them... they said if i want to return it i need to pay all sorts of fees or they can give me a discount of 20 dollars (70 dollars for a refurb?). this is ridiculous, it was false advertising. im not sure what to do.

If you have a credit card start a charge back. Probably state "Item not as described" and provide proof.

Call Amazon

Yeah, just go through Amazon themselves. They're almost worse than Paypal when it comes to siding with the buyer, which in this case totally works in your favor. File an A-Z claim (I think that's what it's called). The seller will lose, hard.

And if it is refurb/used, rate then accordingly as well.

I can attest to this, I've gotten 100% of my claims settled on my behalf as the buyer.

Amazon still sold new Dreamcasts as late as 2005. They would go OOS on occasion...but would always get more in stock (from who-knows-where). Since then it's only been Amazon Sellers with this (http://kotaku.com/#%215222703/dreamcast-new-in-box-99-at-thinkgeek) small exception in 2009.

I remember purchasing two brand new Dreamcast units early last year directly through Amazon.

They were new...even had the smell of new...but one was missing the 2.0 Web Browser. I was a bit ticked, but it was nothing too serious.

I still have them packed away, like new. Would love to have more backup consoles.

I looked into this a bit out of curiosity, and the culprit seems to be a failing laser that struggles with reading CD-R media at full speed, but not GD-ROM discs. I wonder if Sega tweaked the laser in later models.
