I am thinking about getting a Wii for the first time, and I definitely want the ability to play Japanese Wii/Gamecube games.

In general, I would just buy the Japanese Wii, and purchase all the JP games, but the exchange rate is so terrible right now between USD/JPY that I would rather have the option to buy/play the US version on some titles.

I know Nintendo blocked the freeloader from working years ago, but I was wondering if there is a reliable work around yet.

Options? Opinions?

Actually, I was in a similar situation where I brought a Freeloader & a Action Replay to test on both the Gamecube and the wii. Not surprisingly, both the Freeloader and the Action Replay works on the Gamecube. Now, I did test them on the wii and I got interesting results: the standalone Freeloader didn't load on as expected; however, the Action Replay loaded up as normal. Here's the juicy part: the Action Replay has a build-in Freeloader feature and when you select it and insert the desired import game and load it up.... it works! Please noted that I only tested the Gamecube games and not the wii games

Install the Homebrew Channel. From there, there is a region free channel you can install. I haven't tried the region free channel myself (I ONLY have Japanese games), so I can't give any first-hand information other than to say that it exists.
