My 7 year old niece is coming to visit me and it seems she has become obsessed with playing Pokemon.

I don't know anything about Pokemon, but I'd like to get her some cards and maybe learn how to play, just to be a cool uncle :-)

All I know is what my sister told me, which is that "she has a basic starter pack and 100 level 2 cards plus a bunch of level 2 energy cards". Can y'all recommend what types of cards I should go out to get her, based on that info? I know its not much info, but it's all I have!

Also, does anyone have a link or something to a site or something that has basic tips on how to play? If I already knew how to play when she arrived, I would just be the coolest uncle EVER!

Please help me in my quest for coolness, LOL! Thanks in advance!

I know lots about pokemon. Ok first to buy a pack of 11 cards will cost you about $2. (around here anyways) . There are different "sets" but they are all pretty much the same. Those packs of 11 cards are booster packs. A "shiny" card is called holographic and those are "cool". As for rules you should be able to look on the net for rulebooks. It's an easy game to figure out.

Also when is she coming? If you are interested I could hook you up with a good assortment of cards. I usually bring them to fleas and shows I do and sell the cards for $.10 each and the kids go crazy. Granted I'd give you a deal, like half off.

let me know if you are interested.

hope this helps.

I used to have all the old pokemon games for gameboy and nintendo 64 with every pokemon at level 100 including Charizard.Too bad, I traded them all to get something better because I didn't like pokemon anymore.

Never played the card game either, but I really like the GB ones -- played all three versions of them.

I've never played Magic: The Gathering but it and Pokémon seem fairly similar. I picked up a basic starter set that had a CD with it that taught you how to play the game.

The basic idea of the card game is that you have a deck of cards that you can draw at random, and some cards are Pokemon creatures and some are upgrades to the selfsame creatures and some are power cards and so on and so forth. Your creatures essentially beat each other bloody using various attacks, some of which have a 50% chance of failing or something like that. When you've beat four or so of your opponents senseless then you've won.

The GB / GBC games are better. I don't know about the GBA one because it seems like a rip-off that they'll make you buy a bunch of e-Cards just to get good ones like Mew and stuff.

Dude, about 3 years ago I was basically a Pokemon dealer in school, they reguraly patted me down and checked my locker for cards, sadly I am not kidding, they were banned in school as thy were distractring kids. I have hundreds of cards, I have so many rares I could sell you, I even have a 1st edition Base set Zapdos, which, good luck getting that card for under$75.00, I need some cash so I will sell you all my cards including all rares for cheap, PM me if interested.

If you want a quick way to learn how to play the game, go to Gamestop and pick up the Pokemon:TCG game boy color game. It's the exact rules and will teach you the proper way to play faster than anything.

plus, it's rather fun.

I played Pokemon for about 2 years, while I was running a Pokemon league...so I'm not too up on the newest sets...my big brag was that I pulled 6 1st edition Charizards...and traded them for 15,000 Magic cards...

Best ways to learn: either the Game Boy Color game as AdamG suggested, or if you go to Wizards of the Coast website www.wizards.com and click on Pokemon, they have a link to a learn to play section (Shockwave required).

As for getting cards, a deal like you have with Dave sounds great, I would also suggest you check your local KB Toy Stores...they've been liquidating their Pokemon stock (Since Yu-Gi-Oh is ruling the roost right now). I saw pre-constructed decks 3 for $10 and booster packs from several different sets for 99 cents apiece today.

Hope that helps...

Dave...I've been to KB stores in the last week in Ohio, Michigan, and Tennessee, and I saw some Pokemon cards (mostly Team Rocket and that era) at each of them for 99 cents a pack!! Almost made me want to get back into the game...
