View Full Version : Abortion in Video Games?
tubeway

Video games have contained controversial subject matter including sex, violence and drugs. And some even tackle religion.
But are there any video games with references to abortion? I thought perhaps some old FMV or graphic adventure titles might include it as a minor plot point.
However, the closest situation I can think of is in Stinger for NES, where you're being attacked by flying coathangers.
Anyone?

Final Fantasy III / VI contained a storyline regarding a pregnant teenager and how she was doubting bringing the child into this world.
I thought it was talking about abortion at the time. Not directly, though.

In Silent Hill 3 the protagonist, Heather, has a pill induced abortion near the end of the game. The aborted remains are then immediately consumed by the character Claudia.

lol i was and still am unsure as to wtf i just witnessedSilent Hill 2: Restless Dreams is one of the best games I've ever played, and easily THE best written/scripted games I ever experienced.
Everything about James' journey through Silent Hill reflected his inner demons (which is the case with all who are summoned to the town), which is why the creatures were predominantly female in nature, and typically hypersexualized. The bonded forms of the 'straight jacketed' creatures, the Brookhaven nurses are more sexualized in part 2 than other Silent Hill games (wearing short skirts, revealing tops, etc.), the mannequin creatures being only torsos and genitalized regions of the female form, etc..
James was sexually repressed because of his dying wife's condition, and he was guilty because he had unfulfilled desires, impure thoughts, and resentment towards his wife. Maria was basically born of Jame's broken psyche, and was the polar opposite of the shell of a wife that Mary had become in her later years. Mary was an unkempt, sickly burden, whereas Maria was healthy, exuberant and sexy. Maria is killed repeatedly in the game, her death(s) serves to torture and torment him. James is unable to save her and is forced to face her demise over and over again at the hands of Pyramid head, who's more or less a manifestation of the guilt that he feels for his own sins which don't become clear until the end of the game.
The game is really twisted and deep. It gave me nightmares and uneasy sleep for weeks.
Vomiting is not abortion. No wonder you guys were making me confused about this. Semantics, really. It was a willful (attempted) termination of a fetus that she knew she was carrying. Whether she went to a doctor to suck it out of her uterus, or expelled it from her mouth via a magic pill, it's still the same ends.

We could argue that the aborted fetus is just a metaphor, an image that our feeble minds create to try to comprehend the unviewable visage of the stillborn deity.
Or we could just say the game designers are fucked in the head.

From Wikipedia:
"Soranus, a 2nd-century Greek physician, suggested in his work Gynaecology that women wishing to abort their pregnancies should engage in energetic exercise, energetic jumping, carrying heavy objects, and riding animals. He also prescribed a number of recipes for herbal baths, pessaries, and bloodletting, but advised against the use of sharp instruments to induce miscarriage due to the risk of organ perforation. It is also believed that, in addition to using it as a contraceptive, the ancient Greeks relied upon silphium as an abortifacient. Such folk remedies, however, varied in effectiveness and were not without risk. Tansy and pennyroyal, for example, are two poisonous herbs with serious side effects that have at times been used to terminate pregnancy."

Abortion theme + Popular series + 3D visuals =
Under the Knife: 3rd Trimester, The Race Against Time 3D
I don't think surgical abortions were common pre-medical science (where the mother would be expected to survive, at least). But, abandonment after birth was the predominant mode to achieve the same effect. Also, Pennyroyal.

I agree with your analysis of SH2, although I found it 'disturbing' rather than 'scary.' Anyway, given how much you can appreciate the plot, you should check out a movie called Chasing Sleep. There are a lot of parallels between its story and those of SH2, but the film is also a bit like SH4 in the sense that it's largely confined to a single indoor setting.

If anyone hasn't seen it, Jacob's Ladder is a film that the Silent Hill series seems to borrow heavily from.

The Silent Hill series also seems inspired by David Lynch films. Things cannot be taken literally (at face value) if they are to make any sense. Also, the conversations people have with one another tend to be very vague and restrained, leaving it up to you to piece together what their true motives are.
