I'd like to mod my PS2 slimline to play Japanese PS1 games (and maybe a couple of Japanese PS2 games as well). I don't think I want to use Swap Magic because it seems like a hassle in comparison to just modding it with a chip. Is there a certain chip that's best to get?

For instance, this site offers solderless ones,

http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2/ps2-modchips/dms4-ezi-lite-se-solderless.html

and this one looks good: http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2/ps2-modchips/modbo-4-0.html
It seems to have more features.

There's also this one: http://www.mod-chip.com/ps2/ps2-modchips/matrix-infinity-1-99.html

I don't know which is best. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Mod Chips are tricky to solder. PSX is easy, PSOne is more difficult and the PS2 requires a steady hand and eagle eyes.

I would go with the solderless one, not sure if bootup compatibility issues on the newer PS2 games though.

Found a couple manuals back at the site you linked.

A grey chipped PSX might be another option, easy to solder. Save the PS2 for 100 percent compatibility to all the PS2 games. A nudge to HDAdvance/HDLoader for most of the PS2 games.

It's not as hard as making a Nintoaster is it?

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Thanks. Saved to disk.

I've thought about it, but I already got enough consoles as it is. So many wires, you know?

You could always do what i've done. Block off the tweo tabs that tell the ps2 it's lid is open. Then start up ANY real american game. When the PS1 logo starts up take out the american game and swap in the japanese one.

Problem solved. Now you're playing jaanese games on your english slim ps2. This also works for backups if you're into that sort of thing.

For PS1 games, I just bought a chipped PS1. If you dig through eBay you usually find someone selling it for cheap, as most people have moved on.

This one is kind of ugly but... http://cgi.ebay.com/Playstation-PSX-6-controllers-3-memory-cards-/200589820795?pt=Video_Games&hash=item2eb415c37b

For PS2, unless you get the slim modded or open it up to put a swap magic or something in there, there's the free mcboot memory card. But that only plays DVD games, or CD games converted to DVD. So I'm just going to dig up an old fat PS2, slap a network adaptor and hard drive in it and go from there.

Both ways should be pretty cheap methods to play imports. And if you're going to try some translated imports, you have the ability to patch them and run the backup.
