View Full Version : Best PS1/PSX games that DON'T take advantage of the DualShock?

A friend of mine gave me a box of assorted PlayStation controllers, mostly PS2 DualShock 2s with the left analog stick de-rubberized (o_O). At the bottom, though, were two original PSX controllers, without analog.

Most of what I've played was released after the DualShock, but I've always wondered what was good that only used the D-pad. I know FF7 is digital control and no vibration, but beyond that, my knowledge is limited. I know that 2D stuff is fine, but it's the 3D stuff that I always wondered about.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? That's probably my fave of the period prior to Dual Shock support.

Sullmonkeys is one that springs to mind.

Yay, no stupid analog features needed to bust some heads!

Also, Metal Gear Solid 1. Other than the rumble, you don't need a Dual Shock for anything there.

Basically any game out before 1999 (save for MGS) won't take much advantage of a DualShock; but some of my personal faves of this era were Crash 2 (though it does have analog control support... just no rumble), Jumping Flash! 2, Pocket Fighter and Buster Bros. Collection (what can I say? GOTTA POP THE BUBBLES).

If you're gonna go that route, then you can include practically everything. More games than not allow you to use the D-pad if you prefer. I actually quite frequently do that since I don't like the sticks that much, and if a game has no Dual Shock support at all, then I plug in an original controller.

Pretty much all fighting games are meant for digital controls. The resident Evil games don't need analog, either.

The best control scheme for Quake II actually uses the dpad for walk and the right analog for aiming, so you could play that with the beat up Dualshock pads.

The original Croc (good game) and Bubsy 3D (bad game) are a couple other 3Ds that don't allow use of the analog. There is a way around this if you have a USB Logitech controller that is shaped like a Playstation controller and a PS3. You can use the analog on/off switch to switch over to analog for games that only allowed digital D-Pad control. This is especially useful in games like Diablo and those 3D platformers.

Oh and the original King's Field 1, 2 and Japan 1 are first person action RPGs that don't use analog either. Too old.

all PlayStation games will work without the analog sticks… each game was to cater to the lowest common denominator and early PSX folks may not have 'upgraded' to the dual shock controller like myself… I have a launch PlayStation and never got a dual shock controller…
games that support dual shock have the icon on the back to show that one may use the controller with that specific game

many early PS2 games support the dpad too even GTAIII is able to be fully controlled with the dpad!

Small correction - I know that Ape Escape REQUIRES the Dual Shock, there may be others.

Bit of a misnomer isn't it? Every PS1 game [apart from Ape Escape] can use the digital controller.

And really you don't lose that much. For example most games don't support vibrate anyway.

Tomba! I think it supports vibration, but I'm pretty sure you don't need analog to play it. Also, one of my favorite PS1 games.

I was going to say the same thing. You can play almost any game without analog.

Why WOULDN'T you want to take advantage of a vibrating controller?

Some of the later FPS games must have really simplified controls in digital mode.

Wipeout. Abe's Odyssey is one of a kind (the sequel's junk), though it'll put some demands on you and your system's laser. Legacy of Kain if you're looking for elegant evil, Loaded if you're looking for vulgar (an Interplay game). A weirder one is PO'ed, 1st-person shooter--more weird than great, but shouldn't cost you much.
