View Full Version : The CGE Auction... Ya Think?

Some of my fondest memories of CGE are from the auction the last two years. A few tremendous items. A few tremendous deals. And though he'll deny it, John Hardie is just a natural with a crowd. It's looking like more fun this year as wel simply need to determine which BEER will be used as our mascot this year.

So what do you think... if you were to go the auction, what would you most like to see? What would you bid your heart out on?

Keep in mind that you'd be up against THIS crowd. And if you're any kind of classic gaming veteran, you KNOW a lot of these people. And don't forget MARTY, our protege collector (end left side of first row). 14 years old and simply "in the know".

I had planned on auctioning off my Stadium Events at CGE, but it looks like I'm going to have to eBay it just to pay for my gas to get down to CGE. Oh well, I'll have plenty of good stuff for the people to bid on :o

I usually only have one item up for bids in the auction and I try to make it a "biggie." First year I went, it was the final "Venture II" for the original run. Last year, I made one more "Treasure Chest edition" just for the show. This year - well, no VII's I can promise ya that. :D But I will be auctioning off one heavy-duty gotta-have to the crowd. Let's just say, I'm having it shipped to myself at the hotel so it'll be there for the auction. Big item and it'll be quite the star of someone's collection. But I ain't a-sayin' what it is yet. But someone better be ready to either ship it home or take it with them in a car.

See ya in 30!

I'd most like to see ANYTHING, I didn't get to see the auctions the last few CGEs. A 14 year old kid that's a "protege" collector... when I was 14 I didn't have any money, how does he afford that stuff?

that BIG item, is it for the 2600? or another system? It's for another system. In fact is IS another system. Even cooler, it will include nearly the entire software library ever released for it. Huh? Huh? Cool, eh? Huh? :D

That's Marty! He's beeen to the last two CGE auctions. I don't know if his parents fund him or if he saves his allowance all year but he really KNOWS what he's doing. He's great to have around because he's got that excitement we had when it was new tempered with an understanding of the hobby and values of things.

It doesn't hurt that he's been armed with a DP Guide, of course. :)

When I went two years ago, there was this 25ish couple in the next row. Marty
outbid the guy on something (don't remember what), and the guy said "I let him win because he's just a kid". Then his girlfriend goes "Yeah, and also because he's got more money than you!" That was cracking me up just as much as the "Now WHO would fake an Odyssey2 prototype?" line.

Hi everyone. It's Marty I just recently signed up here cause I lost my e-mail address awhile ago. Im just saying I'll be going again this year. My parents usually fund me with like $50 dollars. I save the rest up by working for my dad at his company and helping my mom with her flowers and stuff. I don't by much during the summer at all so I can save up the last of my CGE savings. This year my goal is $500 dollars, and from the looks of it I'm going to make it. Looking foward to seeing everyone this year.

Nice of ya to pop in, Marty!

I hope you can stick around - the downside is that you're no longer "under the radar" as they say. I doubt anyone will take you lightly at a CGE auction ever again after last year. :)

Game on.

I should definitely find something to put in the auction...but the only things i have right now are a box of unopened nintendo trading cards, and some SMS games.

Marty,

Nobody will be fooled by you this year! I was stunned last year by your bidding. You're defintly aware of the scene. If you ever decide to be a stock broker please call me. I'll be one of your first clients! :)

At first I though you were a little high on the Nintendo store display. I was feeling a little releived when you lost the bidding war on that one. But now I pretty much know you were on the ball. If only for your own tastes.

Hope you love that Vectrex. I was the one who put the Vectrex and the 3D Imager on the auction block.

And now for a sneek:

A new Vectrex Game with a special dedication made just for the show will be up on the auction block at Auction Night on Saturday.

Another Vectrex will also be on the auction block so you can enjoy the game play right away!

I don't know why the silly CGE guys say
"A live auction is held on Saturday night after the show, where many rare and one-of-a-kind items are put on the block. You could end up getting the deal of a lifetime!"

The auction is a part of the show, not after the show! Maybe even the best part of the show.

The only other parts to equal the Auction Night for me were:
The Dig-Dug drop,
The games (of course),
and the Ralph Baer session a few years ago with his grandson helping to demonstrate the game. That session was just all around smoothy and coolness.

Now if I can just win the next auction where I demanded the cold beer, and almost got it, I'll be doing fine. That hot Vegas sun need some quenching!

I just hope I don't run out of money before the auction, considering all of the items that have come up for sale in the past few weeks on here. O_O

Wow! Only 2 weeks away now! Can't wait!

The auction is the best part (IMHO). I really like seeing what there is and what people are into. I referenced the first (WOA) auction as one of my fondest memories and was sad to see it missing the following years. The past 2 years John has done a great job and it has been alot of fun. I am looking forward to buying a few things again this year.

Yea I really wanted that store display, but I didn't want to spend all my money on one item. Know that I look back on it, that item went pretty high. lol
