I don't know if there is already a thread like this, but if there is go ahead and lock it up.
In the music industry there are spans of time where a particular genre of music is the dominant genre, such as disco in the 70's and grunge in the 90's. These "fads" tend to last roughly 10 years before another genre comes to take its place.
What I'm wondering is what will be the next big genre to come up in gaming? Currently we seem to be in the first person shooter fad, and we have been in it for a while now, is it coming to an end soon? is there even any genre that seems ready to become the next big thing?
Wondering what you all think.

Partying and raves- perfect for those nights where your friend slips multiple drugs into your water bottle and you have a Kinect to annoy the people in the apartment below with, not to mention the frightening photos that were autouploaded online that you'll have to spend four days explaining.
Either that or 3DS porn sims.

The next big thing is going to be games that use your social networking skills to advance. They'll turn your normal interactions into achievement-worthy gameplay.
Think about what people like and what makes them happy. Make a game about that, and they'll play it. Artificial accomplishment goes a long way.

Yeah I agree with the above poster. The casual trend will continue and on top of it will be the aforementioned achievements and social networking drivel.
When did games stop being about fun?

Is it just me or do people seem like there over the whole 3d thing before it really even started?

I want more games like Alan Wake and Heavy Rain that seem to be a very cinematic way of presenting video games.

Microtransaction-laden, uber casual smartphone-based games? That what Konami seems to believe will be the next big thing, apparently.

Ever try Remember Me? It looks great, has a cool plot, but is about as free-roaming as Sega CD-era FMV games.

4 years latter, and I'm afraid we're well out of fad territory. Its now... *shudder*... a trend.

I thought all along it was freemium games, even FPS and Third person games too on tablets are bloated down with IAP. It's all about the whale now, the suckerfish that'll pay far more in digital to real coin than some junk in a box (or as a download with big cut steam sales) that are taking second.

Whoddathunk that it would be Minecraft all along. Four years ago, Minecraft was just being released.
Not sure when the next big genre will be, but I'm sure it'll suck just as much as Minecraft and the FPS boom have.

the FPS boom have.
The FPS Boom that has been going on continually since 1996?

FPS was on the up and up in the mid 90s and early 200s, but at that time wouldn't have considered it nearly has pervasive as starting from 2002/2003 or so. It seemed to me that, despite some giant names, the "big" game genre from 1996-2004ish was 3D platforming.

lol, no. That period gave us Quake 2, Jedi Knight, Unreal Tournament, Half Life, Counter Strike, and Quake 3. (Edit: mother fucking Deus Ex!)
Maybe on CONSOLES, where all we had was GoldenEye, but that was the golden age of FPSs.
Before the post Call of Duty dark times.

Late 80s and early 90s it was mostly platformers. Late 90s early 2000s it was RPGs and strategy games. Late 2000s early 2010s it's still FPs games. Minecraft was a big success and we're only now seeing larger developers trying to capitalize on it with Dragon Quest Builders, so maybe the building genre is the next big genre of the decade? Open world isn't a genre, but open world has become exceedingly prevailant.

You're quibbling over semantics, here. If it's only on one system, you can hardly call that pervasive. It wasn't top dog among genres. Meanwhile, during that same era, 3D platformers of all stripes came out on all the consoles and PC.
