the main reason i am asking is the other day i acquired some games for a Sega master system and don't have one but i have seen a few that were fairly cheap but had none of the wires. i was planing on using the power and video wires from my turbografx 16 which also works on my 1st gen genesis. any info would be appreciated.
thanks

Yes for both 3 and 6-button: they use the B & C buttons as 1 & 2.
If 6-button doesn't work, hold the "mode" button when powering on to switch it to 3-button mode (this also applies to the 10-15 Genny games that don't respond to 6-button mode).

was double dragon for sms that bad?

not really. it's an early entry in the genre makes it rather bland today.

was double dragon for sms that bad?8-bit Double Dragon, period, was that bad. Honestly, I thought that the SMS was better than the NES version, because it was more like that the arcade game (no collecting hearts and shit to do moves), but that's not saying much, because the flicker was so terrible on the Master System. The port just wasn't very good, IMO.

Alien Syndrome and Bomber Raid do not work properly with a 6 button non-turbo official Sega Genesis controller, not sure about 3 button.

I remember Double Dragon as being one of the must-have games for the Master System. At the time, I would have loved to get a SMS for Double Dragon alone!

I just watched some videos of the game for the SMS and it does look pretty bad. The flickering is crazy! Also, it seems the hit detection is very flaky. I suppose the two-player option would be good.

The NES port is fun and a good game overall, even if it is only single player.

I never had any trouble to play Double Dragon on the SMS - but then I have been playing it since new… I find no issue where any flicker damages overall game play.

One thing is DO NOT pay alot of money for it - it is probably the most common SMS game (along with Choplifter). Anyone who ever had a Master System had Double Dragon… you would think it was a pack in LOL

There are a handful of games that will not work with a Genesis Controller… some fellows have posted several titles already, I'll post what I can recall (of note, if anyone has the manual for the Power Base Converter - I can't find mine, it lists all the games that require a SMS controller)

some I can recall of hand:
Bomber Raid
Alien Syndrome
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Shanghai
Where in the World is Carmen San Diego

There are a few more but thats all I am able to remember

It said that:

The following game cartridges must be played with the Sega Master System Control Pads, Model 3020, only.

Great Volleyball
Shanghai
Alien Syndrome
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
Montezuma's Revenge
Bomber Raid

The F-16 Fighting Falcon Cartridge cannot be used with the Power Base Converter.

I wonder if they mean literally the "cartridge". I'm pretty sure that the card doesn't work with it, but I wonder if the cartridge version of the game doesn't work with it either?

8-bit Double Dragon bad? :ass: I personally thought the NES DD's were really good myself. Anyone try the Double Dragon for the Genesis? I wonder if it's as good as the arcade version. :)

The genesis port is actually pretty amazingly close to the arcade (seems a bit easier though) rather faithfull and worth picking up.

the f16 doesn't work is its an sg-1000 game that has some code that isn't compatable, unless they modded the code in the cart version it still woudln't work.

It's likely neither version works without a Master System controller.

make that controllers… F-16 Fighting Falcon requires two controllers to play!

I don't remember if the issue was with a 3-button or 6-button Genesis pad or both, but Penguin Land has issues as well.

In any event, the lack of buttons on the Master System really hurt it, IMO. There are games like the Zillions where a pause and/or select button would have came in really handy.

It's with both. The odd thing is that this, Bomber Raid, and Wonder Boy in Monster Land play fine with a Genesis controller when played in Japanese mode (on a JP Mark III/SMS with adapter or on a PBC with JP or switched Genesis).

i received the sms today and it seems to work good. i think i see what you are saying about double dragon but it is not that bad. i also see what you are talking about with penguin land. you can't play it with a 6 button controller and i didn't try it with a 3 button one but i assume it is the same.

Penguin Land is a fun game, too. You'll definitely want to get a hold of a Master System controller. They aren't very hard to find, fortunately.

I just play it on my JP SMS or PBC switched to JP mode so I can use to Genesis controller with it (I have SMS pads, but I don't like them as much as the Genesis pad). It's very odd how these games allow the Genesis controller in JP mode, but I have a switched Genesis and a JP SMS with tototek adapter, so it's definitely the case. I also like the title screen in JP mode. Penguin Land isn't my favorite for FM sound, though. JP system is an advantge for Bomber Raid as well. FM sound + Genesis controller + rapid fire = win!
